Women who let their hair go grey

CJ2010 · 13/09/2012 10:36

I don't understand why women, except the very old, say age 70 plus do not cover their grey hair?

I know a couple of women who have just turned 40 who are letting their grey come through and are just leaving it. It makes them
look so much older and washed out. I don't understand it really. I appreciate that some women are into the 'natural' look and are not fussed with make up and hair dye but I think by not having colour on your hair you age yourself dramatically.

Grey hair looks so wrong on younger women. AIBU?

Why do men not cover their grey hair? I don't understand. I appreciate they might be into the 'natural' look, but why don't they just dye it?

Sparrowp · 17/09/2012 12:12

Or why don't they cover it with a jaunty hair clip? or flowers?

OP why don't you say that everyone should wear flowers in their hair? Everyone would look so much nicer, especially in summer. I don't understand it really.

catsrus · 17/09/2012 12:41

I watched my auntie and my mother age, one dyed her hair the other didn't, I know which one always looked older (hint, it wasn't the one with grey hair!). Women with dyed hair might look younger from a distance, but an awful lot of them (not all of course Wink) just look wrong when the face and hair don't match. Hair grows really quickly, do you really think people don't notice when the roots need doing Hmm?

YABVU. Like others I also think grey can look stylish, not everyone with natural grey hair looks old.
You should come and take a walk around the European Town I'm living in atm....bright postboxred is not a great shade for women over 60 but apparently, here it's better than being grey!

I've had grey hairs since I was around 20 (I'm now 34), all the front of my head is now completely grey but I dye it black, not because I feel I have to but because I like it. I use hair mascara on my roots so I don't have to dye it so often, I'm happy with that for now but I'm not adverse to leaving the grey in the future.

TunipTheVegemal · 17/09/2012 15:06

SparrowP, I like your thinking. We would ALL look nicer with fresh flowers in our hair at all times, men and women. We would smell lovely too!
Thanks
Smile

Someone up-thread says it's hard not to conform, it really isn't, just don't give a monkeys about what other people think of you and it's really easy. I had to use the camera on my phone to check how much grey I actually have (quite a bit) it matters that little to me.

It's quite simple really, I could use fairly inflamatory language but I'll restrain myself, basically it boils down to a very simple choice

if you want to dye your hair then dye your hair,

if you don't want to dye your hair then don't dye your hair,

if you currently dye your hair and want to stop but don't want to face the chavvy badger look then find a good cause and try to get some sponsorship to shave your head!

I don't know why I keep coming back to this thread, the idea that women have to 'Make an effort' is rapidly moving to the top of my list of pet hates.

I'm off to find a venus fly trap to wear in my hair.

TalkinPeace2 · 17/09/2012 16:37

certain men would suit a rafflesia ....

Actually OP, I kinda agree. Personally, I think grey hair on women and men rarely looks great under 70.

Hair is the thing that can really make you look 10 years younger with the right colour and style. Grey hair makes anyone look 10 years older imo. I dye my husband's hair and he looks much better when it's brown.

Lizzy1975 · 17/09/2012 20:09

OP young women don't 'allow themselves' to go grey. They go grey. I am 37. I look 27. I have had grey hairs since I was 17. Sometimes I dye it. Sometimes I can't be arsed to. Either way I think you'll find all those terribly grey-haired women out there really aren't giving it as much thought as you are Smile

garlicnutty · 17/09/2012 21:03

TP2, I had to look up rafflesia. Weird! Wouldn't make the men smell good, though ...

Nothing to do with grey/balding hair, obv. Can we talk about weird plants instead?

TalkinPeace2 · 17/09/2012 21:06

Try a nice sauromatum or an amorphophallus - just the thing :-)
I LOVE weird plants ....

garlicnutty · 17/09/2012 22:31

Excellent, I can think of a few dickheads who'd be perfectly suited by Amorphophallus headwear Wink

Who knew there was a whole group of strange-looking carrion-scented flowers? Well, obviously you did, TP2 ...

Perfect for dickheads and shitheads!

TalkinPeace2 · 17/09/2012 22:33

garlic
when they come into flower my greenhouse smells like the water buffalo house at a zoo!
A nice sprig of rue (smells like cat wee when bruised) would also be excellent for certain politicians

garlicnutty · 17/09/2012 23:17

Grin Can I do the bruising? Please?

... oh, you mean the plant not the politician ...

Redbindy · 17/09/2012 23:30

OP you are so right! We should judge everybody by their looks.
By the way have you any photos of yourself posted anywhere that others could use to pass some constructive criticism of you?

CommunistMoon · 17/09/2012 23:34

I'm 36 and my hair is rapidly turning white - 'grey' is generally a misnomer. It's been happening over the last 10 years and I am ok with it. I dyed my hair when I was younger for fun, I would not be interested in trying to cover anything up. If I was a chap such acceptance would be considered dignified, y'know.

TheCunningStunt · 20/09/2012 07:41

Grey hair is on bbc news this morning...was this a lazy journo thread??

EasilyBored · 20/09/2012 07:42

And the woman they are interviewing, with the white/grey hair, looks 100x better than the brown haired lady.

TheCunningStunt · 20/09/2012 07:44

Yes she does.....

ZombiesAreClammyDodgers · 20/09/2012 07:46

YABVU.
It may not be the choice for you but it's a personal choice.
My mother greyed in her 20s. The first time she used hairdye clumps of it fell out- her skin just reacted badly. And she simply did not have the money to get it professionally done.
So YAB v judgmental as well.

Jux · 20/09/2012 08:06

I was wondering if this was a Daily Fail piece, when I saw it on BBC, too. The sad looking brown haired woman was a DM journo. Either they started this thread or they've nicked the idea......

JeezyOrangePips · 20/09/2012 08:18

The woman with the grey hair came across so well. Totally comfortable in her skin. The woman with the dyed hair seemed much less so.

I think it's a shame that some people seem to base their self-esteem on their appearance. It must get tough to feel good about youself as you get older as a result.

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 20/09/2012 08:22

I have cornflowers and gardenias. Which shall I put in DH's hair and which in mine?
