Women who let their hair go grey

CJ2010 · 13/09/2012 10:36

I don't understand why women, except the very old, say age 70 plus do not cover their grey hair?

I know a couple of women who have just turned 40 who are letting their grey come through and are just leaving it. It makes them
look so much older and washed out. I don't understand it really. I appreciate that some women are into the 'natural' look and are not fussed with make up and hair dye but I think by not having colour on your hair you age yourself dramatically.

Grey hair looks so wrong on younger women. AIBU?

Not it's not crunchy
Pretty does not define a woman! It's an
attribute like many others!

AnnaLiza · 13/09/2012 22:01

Hair dying doesn't necessarily have to look fake either! It's not like a spray tab fur example. It can look very natural.

EchoBitch · 13/09/2012 22:01

theinets, are you a dermatologist,i didn't know that was the cause of rosacea.
Or were you just being nasty?

TunipTheVegemal · 13/09/2012 22:02

This is a fantastic book. You'll never see Western beauty practices in the same way again.

AnnaLiza · 13/09/2012 22:02

Spray tan

ReshapeWhileDamp · 13/09/2012 22:05

All of a sudden, I'm feeling really proud of my natural (grey) highlights! Grin

OP, you sound really ... lovely. Smile

QuickQuickSloe · 13/09/2012 22:07

Oooh fab! The other thread vanished and I had only scoffed half of my pick and mix.

Loving the concept that a woman chooses to go grey!

Personally, I choose not to waste time and money on hair dye. Especially time. My time is valuable. I want to spend it on things that interest me or enrich my life.

Dying my hair does not enrich my life in any way whatsoever. And while I totally agree with the person that says dying your hair does not make you vain and shallow, I do think judging people for choosing not to dye theirs suggests a very shallow way of looking at others. I'd rather be valued for who I am than the colour of my hair.

MrsGeologist · 13/09/2012 22:10

I wanted to dye my hair grey a few years ago.

Decided I couldn't be arsed.

bugster · 13/09/2012 22:12

crunchyfrog I don't think many people use 'pretty' that way. Most people acknowledge that you can be pretty, and many other things as well. Most women don't take it as an insult, which they really should if it had the connotations you attribute to it.

Some people of course are much too pre-occupied with looks, I don't deny that, and there are so many forms of beauty in our world, a person's physical appearance is just one.

Groovee · 13/09/2012 22:13

A mother at school said this to me "time you covered up that grey, it's annoying me!"

As long as I know it annoys her, I won't crack out the hair dye.

LibrariansMakeNovelLovers · 13/09/2012 22:14

YABU - I love grey hair. I grew my hair out just so I could have long grey/white hair (although typically, colouring-wise, I take after the side of the family that goes grey/white in their 50s and I'm only early 30s). I got bored so now have dreads; Can't wait to have lovely long grey dreads.
I can't stand this attitude that 'well this is what I think so it must be right' - you would probably think I look a fright, I would probably think you look a fright. Meh. Each to their own

JeezyOrangePips · 13/09/2012 22:19

Haha Groovee! I wonder if you live near the op...

redwhiteandblueeyedsusan · 13/09/2012 22:20

cba
do not want a badger stripe
can't afford it
haven't got time
don't want to put to put chemicals on my head/in the environment
and when I do go grey I may at last be able to wear pink.. without clashing

hth

redwhiteandblueeyedsusan · 13/09/2012 22:20

now give me some pop corn!

NinthWave · 13/09/2012 22:21

I had my hair dyed silver at Toni&Guy when I was 21 MrsGeologist. It looked awesome, and was free cos they'd meant to do it blonde but fucked it up Grin

OliviaLMumsnet · 13/09/2012 22:22

As it would have been his 96th birthday today, it seems appropriate to post this Roald Dahl quote: If you have good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.

Cynner · 13/09/2012 22:23

I have indeed let myself go; to the cafe with a friend, to the bookstore, to long chats with my children. All activities I would rather do instead of faffing with my hair. My hair colour does not define me as a person.

TunipTheVegemal · 13/09/2012 22:23

Grin Olivia

Empusa · 13/09/2012 22:25

EchoBitch · 13/09/2012 22:25

Did he dye his hair though Olivia?

Cynner · 13/09/2012 22:26

I might consider shading my lady garden a vibrant lilac though

Claifairy · 13/09/2012 22:28

I need to look older so leave my grey in - it's actually a lovely silver colour and I can't wait to go completely silver as it is going to look fabulous!

(And I can't be arsed dying it every 2 weeks as my hair grows far too fast and the silver will not dye no matter how long I leave it in and most of my bathroom is already dyed dark brown from all my other attempts.)

LadyBeagleEyes · 13/09/2012 22:28

I have highlights in my hair and regular haircuts.
My choice.
Just as it's everybody else's choice not to
I have a mate 10 years younger than me who was grey in her thirties, she still looks younger than me.
