Women who let their hair go grey

CJ2010 · 13/09/2012 10:36

I don't understand why women, except the very old, say age 70 plus do not cover their grey hair?

I know a couple of women who have just turned 40 who are letting their grey come through and are just leaving it. It makes them
look so much older and washed out. I don't understand it really. I appreciate that some women are into the 'natural' look and are not fussed with make up and hair dye but I think by not having colour on your hair you age yourself dramatically.

Grey hair looks so wrong on younger women. AIBU?

AnnaLiza - maybe your friend really is suddenly tired and needs some genuine help and some of your time - you know - that stuff that makes you get older....

AnnaLiza · 13/09/2012 21:35

I'm not judging anyone for not dying their hair! I just think that if I was them I would make an effort to just like I make an effort to wax my legs and paint my tie nails in summer. That's all.

AnnaLiza · 13/09/2012 21:36

Toe nails

Gentleness · 13/09/2012 21:37

Put the facts together. She's gone grey quite quickly and looks suddenly tired. The only thing that occurs to you is hair dye, shaving and nail polish? Really?

NeverKnowinglyUnderstood · 13/09/2012 21:39

hmm just to shock you Annaliza I am a lovely person with look away now if you are of a sensitive disposition Hairy legs and pits and greying hair...

nevetknowingly I'm sorry to disagree with you because I truly think your nickname is pure genius Grin
Having said that I think everyone wants to feel pretty and look young if given the chance too. There's nothing wrong with that IMO.

irishchic · 13/09/2012 21:41

I agree OP. I dont mind looking my age, but if i let my grey take over, i wont look my age, i'll look bloody ten years older! I dye my hair so that i can actually look my age, not so that i can look like a 20 year old. (am 43 and 50% grey) . I do think that most women look better with a colour in their hair than if they are grey. Few women can carry grey off and still look amazing, i envy those who can.

NeverKnowinglyUnderstood · 13/09/2012 21:42

I think that it is the everyone word that makes me disagree with you.
There are alot of people that think that but really honestly there are alot of average people like me who are happy with the idea of aging.

TunipTheVegemal · 13/09/2012 21:42

Someone is on the wind-up, I fear....

TunipTheVegemal · 13/09/2012 21:43

(I mean Theinets, of course.)

AmINearlyThereYet · 13/09/2012 21:44

Haven't read the thread (cba) but I love my hair colour (grey in wide streaks) & so does my hair-dresser. Life is too short to colour it anyway.

If you do colour it, how do you decide when to stop? Grey hair at 40+ looks a lot better than dyed hair at 60+, IMO.

YABU.

CrunchyFrog · 13/09/2012 21:44

Annaliza that simply isn't true. "Pretty?" What a disempowering concept.

irishchic · 13/09/2012 21:44

TCOB - I do agree. Being very grey myself home applies dyes are just not an option, they do not cover the grey at all. Getting it done well costs a lost of dosh, and more annoyingly, takes hours in the hairdresser. I resent having to spend all that time and money, but on the other hand if i dont, i end up looking older than my years and i just am too vain for that! Grin

AnnaLiza · 13/09/2012 21:44

Well I applaud you for it neverknowingly. I wish I could accept it too...

bugster · 13/09/2012 21:46

Come on, perplexed, dyeing your hair isn't really as drastic as liposuction.

I think people (men and women) have never felt that happy looking old, unless they really are properly old. Of course there are exceptions like those people who want to look older to be taken seriously in a career. But they are rare. Dyeing your hair is one of the easiest and most effective ways to look younger. sometimes I think people just don't really think about what a positive difference it would make.

bugster · 13/09/2012 21:49

crunchyfrog could you explain why being pretty is 'disempowering'?

Baskets45 · 13/09/2012 21:53

Life is too short to read 14 bloody pages on the merits/demerits of hair dye, so may be a repeat here. Pls forgive - I got to bottom of P1. What about women with allergies to substances in hair dye (my throat felt tight when I had highlights done - hairdresser was a bit freaked when I told her - not sure she'll 'do' me again without presence of Epipen or paramedic team!). Or women who have no spare cash/time.

Apart from the not giving a toss side of argument. i've known some women look really good with grey/white hair. Really classy.

AnnaLiza · 13/09/2012 21:54

She's just trying to act "superior".
I hate people who judge women for trying to look good. Usually looking and feeling good go together, you know?

CrunchyFrog · 13/09/2012 21:56

bugster sure.

It's a word that is used for small children, and women whose appearance is the single defining feature about them.

That's why.

BigHairyFlowers · 13/09/2012 21:57

Not everyone agrees that looking fake is looking good, though. Alot of people think it looks hideous.

Baskets45 · 13/09/2012 21:57

BUT 'feeling good' and 'being good' come from inside, surely? Appearance is all about surface stuff.

jchocchip · 13/09/2012 21:57

A lady I work with has lovely thick grey hair. She always had it short but is growing it at the moment, it looks stunning. I wish I had hair like hers, and I don't dye mine though its starting to grey now. I know people who dye their hair too. It's their hair they can do what they like with it. I do notice and compliment a good cut, but have to know someone really well to comment on a colour...
