Women who let their hair go grey

CJ2010 · 13/09/2012 10:36

I don't understand why women, except the very old, say age 70 plus do not cover their grey hair?

I know a couple of women who have just turned 40 who are letting their grey come through and are just leaving it. It makes them
look so much older and washed out. I don't understand it really. I appreciate that some women are into the 'natural' look and are not fussed with make up and hair dye but I think by not having colour on your hair you age yourself dramatically.

Grey hair looks so wrong on younger women. AIBU?

I started going grey when I met DHHmm DM went grey mid twenties so it's clearly hereditary but why let the truth get in the way of a good dit but since having DD it seems to have stopped or at least the grey ones have mostly fallen out and haven't regrown.

I have thought about dying my hair purely for vanity reasons but frankly I can't be arsed. DH doesn't mind, neither do I and I certainly wouldn't do it because I gave a shit about what strangers thought.

stargazy · 13/09/2012 19:03

Each to their own I say.And also depends on the type of grey IMO.My cousin for example went grey in her early 30s and it looks great. That lovely silvery, thick healthy sort of grey.Mine however as it increases is the kind of dull, draining grey therefore I colour and will continue to do so well into ripe old age.If the chemicals don't get me first that is!

colleysmill · 13/09/2012 19:09

I'm going very slowly white, not grey, proper white just like my granny. It always really suited her.

At the moment I'm blonde with ash blonde streaks so it will hopefully compliment rather than cover it.

thegreylady · 13/09/2012 19:14

Only read first page but am incensed that anyone dare criticise someone for choosing to allow nature to take its course.
I dyed the grey in my hair until I was 60 then I got breast cancer. When my hair grew back I swore I would never dye it again as an affirmation that I was proud to be me and glad to be alive just as I am-real.
I think those who dye their hair into old age can look a bit artificial because your skin tone alters with your hair colour as you age.

mumblecrumble · 13/09/2012 19:18

Oh. My. God.

I have a few greys coming through and my Mum is obsessed with trying to get me to dye my hair and can;t understand why....

Becuase I have decided that the small amount of time, effort and money I have can be spent on MUCH better things?!!! I mean who, WHO could be arsed? I just about manage to paint my nails once a week - so maybe understand why some do it but my goodness.

WHO SAYS brown is more beautiful than grey?
Who says aging and being older is less beautiful?

Not me.

I think Mary Beard is one of the best TV presnters - she is eloquant, has an expressive face and real knowledge. And yet when I google her, the main thing I see is some young blond saying she isn;t pretty enough for TV.

NAff off.

I am MUCH MUCH more than my hair.

mumblecrumble · 13/09/2012 19:18

Also.

WHy are you making those over 70 an expection?

Pack that in.

Tweasels · 13/09/2012 19:22

Ooh I've missed all the fun today. Have no response OP, sorry but you're ridiculous.

Fecklessdizzy · 13/09/2012 19:40

Why do you care what these other women do? Unless you're a dye-manufacturer faced with nose-diving profits and a helicopter-less old age ... But cheer up, think of the savings you'll make on Shades Of Autumn Sludge (TM) when you hit the big seven- oh! Grin

sensesworkingovertime · 13/09/2012 20:05

Although a little part of me can see where you are coming from here OP I have to disagree with you, say YABU and make a few points along the way.

  1. Old women with jet black or none grey hair on the whole look stupid and it just serves to make their faces look older as their skin and hair don't match if you ask me.

  2. Seems to me the fashion is for women and girls of any age to dye their hair even though they've got a perfectly lovely colour and healthy hair - lets chuck a load of chemicals at it - seems to be the in thing - CRAZY.

  3. Grey hair in a good cut can look beautifully chique (look at Meryl Streep, Jamie Leigh Curtis etc) and with the right make up and clothes etc looks ultra classy. Mutton trying desparately to be lamb looks ultra cheap.

wordfactory · 13/09/2012 20:16

Dh is going a little grey around the temples. It is completely lush.

Why shouldn't women be the same?

FanjoPingpong · 13/09/2012 20:16

I cannot wait to go grey. I think it looks distinguished.

sensesworkingovertime · 13/09/2012 20:21

Purplehouse there should be more people like you out there - a true star.

Jins · 13/09/2012 20:37

Oh for goodness sake...

First grey hair at 17 here and a lifetime of colourant since then. I wish I'd let the grey come through.

What does it matter what anyone chooses to do with their hair? It's what's inside that counts, no?

because it looks beautiful. because it is dignified. because not everyone is chasing their lost youth...

TheWonderfulFanny · 13/09/2012 20:59

Op, just scanned the thread looking at your contributions and yes, you can Fuck the Fuck off.

Somebloke · 13/09/2012 21:00

Agreed. Wink

CremeEggThief · 13/09/2012 21:02

YABU. Why do you think you have to 'get' it?

Excuse me Theinets? You think people get rosacea because they let themselves go? Are you a troll or just extremely stupid and obnoxious?

AnnaLiza · 13/09/2012 21:17

I think you have a point OP. Yes grey hair can look classy and suit some but this is probably not what you has in mind, right? I have a very good who's in her late thirties who's gone very grey and she suddenly looks tired and - well yes - old. Of course I don't care what she does with her hair but I do think she would look prettier with a hair dye. I don't know why people have been so critical with you here. Hmm

BigHairyFlowers · 13/09/2012 21:18

I'd go with your first option there, Tunip.

Actually, two and three are quite fitting too.

TCOB · 13/09/2012 21:23

OP YABVU.

I am very grey (35) - started at 20. I don't want to be grey, but you know, there's not a lot I can do about. I feel pretty shit about it TBH, but I don't really want to dye it either, because on top of all the plucking, shaving, cleansing, moisturising shite (and and working FT and trying to bring up two young children) it's just another irritating job too far that I don't always have time for. So knowing that women like you are looking at me all judgily because I do not subscribe to the tiring, messy, fake process you have prescribed for me and others like me, makes me feel even shitter. BTW have you tried dying actual grey hair with shop-bought dyes? It looks utterly ludicrous.

NeverKnowinglyUnderstood · 13/09/2012 21:29

AnnaLiza & OP
For me it is a sadness that to look smart or pretty or all those things being young is a requirement.
Being young isnt the be all and end all of everything,

perplexedpirate · 13/09/2012 21:32

OMG, why don't these awful wrinkly people just have Botox? And facelifts?
Why don't all these fat people have liposuction?
Why are there so many old and ugly offending my delicate young eeyyyyeeeesss?!?
