Women who let their hair go grey

CJ2010 · 13/09/2012 10:36

I don't understand why women, except the very old, say age 70 plus do not cover their grey hair?

I know a couple of women who have just turned 40 who are letting their grey come through and are just leaving it. It makes them
look so much older and washed out. I don't understand it really. I appreciate that some women are into the 'natural' look and are not fussed with make up and hair dye but I think by not having colour on your hair you age yourself dramatically.

Grey hair looks so wrong on younger women. AIBU?

Judgey Catsbum-mouths can give you lines around the lips that make you look a) older and b) really judgey.
I'd faaaarrr rather have grey hair on show than those lines, CJ2010. Just so you know.

My mum dyed her hair a lot. It didn't help. My great aunt had black hair naturally and dyed it black until she was ~70 - it looked fucking terrible. Nothing quite so ageing as dyeing your hair a completely age-inappropriate colour, IMO.

Chubfuddler · 13/09/2012 15:39

I have an actual Mallen streak like Caitlin Moran (blessed be her name). I was thinking of dying my hair but now I'm not going to, just in the hope one day we pass in the street and my hair annoys you op. in fact I hope looking at me ruins your entire day.

I wasn't thinking in your 40s, but more people who are completely grey in their 20s. Those who think it's great to look old, can you honestly say that, if, for example, at age 25, someone said'oh, actually I thought you were about 45', you would take it as a compliment?

princessx2 · 13/09/2012 15:53

I have just turned 41 and don.t dye my hair-I have a lot of grey but it's still mainly it's natural dark brown at the moment. I also have short hair, which, should I choose to dye it, would cost close to £100 every 6-8 weeks to cut and colour. There is no way I can justify spending this amount of money on colouring hair!

I just don't see the need to put tons of chemical on my hair for the sake of apparently looking better- my hair looks fine in its natural state and is in beautiful condition-which would probably go out of the window were I to dye it.

Ephiny · 13/09/2012 15:54

The OP was about women in their 40s.

I imagine many women would probably prefer to dye their hair if it was completely grey by mid-20s (I would have done), but if some really aren't bothered by it, then that's fine too. It might not be what I'd personally choose for myself, but I don't think it's bizarre or wrong.

HipHopOpotomus · 13/09/2012 15:55

However I do agree some grey hair should be dyed

HipHopOpotomus · 13/09/2012 15:56

that was mean - it actually looks quite nice here. But the first pic is more day to day isn't it?

Jux · 13/09/2012 15:59

I wonder who the OP was representing? If there'd been a different response, I wouldn't have been surprised if she'd come back saying "I use X and it's brilliant !"

OneMoreChap · 13/09/2012 16:03

WTF? Individual choice FGS!

You must dye your hair, you must be thing, you must dress like this...

It's all part of the same repulsive exploitative shit, that makes people have unrealistic expectations of both themselves and others.

Thumbwitch · 13/09/2012 16:03

But she's dyed it that colour, HipHop Confused

FryOneFatManic · 13/09/2012 16:04

I have been dyeing my hair since I was about 22-23. It's a family trait to go grey early, and I didn't want that. The front is now all white, while the back is still a dark grey. I did try growing it out a few years ago but it did make me look older. I plan to let it all grow out once the back is also completely white. My dad is now completely white, so white it shines under UV light.

It costs money and maintenance to keep grey hair dyed. A DIY job doesn't work well in the long term and it is costly at the hairdressers. Probably why lots don't dye. Judi Dench is grey and looks fab.

TraineeBabyCatcher · 13/09/2012 16:14

Because your face will tell everyone your age and your hair will just look like a big fat lie draped across your head.

crypes · 13/09/2012 16:18

But your grey hair will tell everyone your age and grey hair shouts 'old'.

squoosh · 13/09/2012 16:19

I feel the need to chime in here and say that some grey haired ladies spend a lot of money maintaining just the right shade of grey, so it's not true that grey always equals no upkeep and dyed equals tons of upkeep.

TheLightPassenger · 13/09/2012 16:24

yabvu. not all people's skin can cope with the dye btw.

mumeeee · 13/09/2012 16:24

Well I think it is up to the individual what they do. I'm55 and still haven't got a single grey hair so don't have to worry about wehter to dye it or not, My Dad didn't start going grey until he was 60 so I probably take after him,

ChasingSquirrels · 13/09/2012 16:28

I don't dye mine cos I don't particularly care what it looks like, and I don't care at all what other people think about what it looks like.

NationalLottie · 13/09/2012 16:28

It actually looks terrible. YANBU

CJ2010 · 13/09/2012 16:33

I'm back! Ooh the anger and defensiveness! Wink

Look I said I respect individual choice and i did state that grey hair on some ladies looks great, however on most people it doesn't. Going by my RL examples it looks awful on such young women.

Men have their own hair / body issues as they age. Grey hair on a man is not a big deal IMO because men tend to have their hair cropped close to their head so there is less of it. Whereas women, tend to wear their hair longer so there is more of it surrounding their face. I do think it has a detrimental affect on their looks ( there will be exceptions of course)

I'm certainly not saying women should dye their hair to look good for a man! This thread was not about looking good for others sakes. I'm thinking from the individual's POV.

YABU. My hair is going grey and it's now at the stage where my dc have noticed. My hairdresser says it is still a good colour and there is no point in dying it. He doesn't even think my mother should start to dye hers yet and hers is about 40% grey at least.

Besides, I like growing old gracefully Grin.

MadBusLady · 13/09/2012 16:38

Actually sod the Marie Antoinette grey thing, I've just been to Caitlin Moran's website and she has hair JUST like mine only in much better condition and with a haircut and she's got this darling little blonde rockabilly lick in the front. It is my dream hair!
