To wonder if it's ever ok to wear hot pants on the school run?

That's it really, SIL wore denim ones today. Our children go to the same school and I was quite surprised at her choice of attire for my nieces first day. I can't imagine my mother ever turning up in a pair of teeny tiny shorts at school. It was a bit weird.

Right, baby fed, must get off here now. I wonder what outfit tomorrow will bring!

Yes sooty I could, you are right, It doesn't matter what anyone wears but just felt like chatting about it. Maybe just the wrong sort of place to parade your derrière I thought that's all!

Not if you're my size it's not, love....lol. Or age, actually. I'm not noted for my sartorial elegance, particularly on the school run. Very impressed by lots of the young mums (well...young to me) who are not only wearing trendy stuff but actually have make up on! Wow.....in a morning I'm doing well if I've managed to do more than put jeans on and then shove anorak over my pyjama top and hope no one notices I was too idle/late to dress properly.

Leena49 · 13/09/2012 04:13

Good for her.

Jackin · 13/09/2012 05:17

On behalf of the menz, yes, wear hot pants. And for those who think they shouldn't, you should :)

ZZZenAgain · 13/09/2012 05:47

it is not a trend I'll be getting into. Wasn't she cold?

BitOutOfPractice · 13/09/2012 06:10

sowornout I'm definitely not a young mum (I'm in my mid 40s) and have always worn make up, proper clothes Wink and heels etc on the school run.

What if you had to get to work after the school run? You'd need to get yourself organised then!

I've never worn hot pants though!

SaraBellumHertz · 13/09/2012 06:13

I wear short shorts to school of the weather permits- why not?

I'm confused by the distinction between clothes that are unacceptable for school run and those that are ok. Surely if an outfit is suitable for public consumption then it is suitable for school?

BitOutOfPractice · 13/09/2012 06:18

sara I have been told outright to my face that my shoes are "inappropriate" for the school run. Whatever. They are appropriate for the meeting I'm off too. And pretty! I was pretty outraged!!

SaraBellumHertz · 13/09/2012 06:40

bit I sometimes get a "oooh you look glamorous" said in a totally snidey manner when I'm on my way into a meeting. Ignore ignore ignore!

BitOutOfPractice · 13/09/2012 06:41

Oh don't worry sara I ham it up even more!!

Liketochat1 · 13/09/2012 06:47

Of course she should be able to.

GupX · 13/09/2012 06:50

OMG I am a bit Shock at how much you all seem to care!

When I was at infants school in the 70's, the younger female teachers wore hot pants..and I still have the class photos that prove it too.

WofflingOn · 13/09/2012 07:37

What does it matter? She's wearing clothes.

merrymouse · 13/09/2012 07:46

I think you can wear whatever you want for the school run. If you would wear hot pants usually, wear them for the school run.

Having children and dropping them off at school shouldn't change your style. (Although I would take my children's opinion into account if they were really embarrassed, and I wouldn't wear something with a slogan that others would find overly offensive - thats just good manners though).

BigRedCheeks · 13/09/2012 07:49

Interesting comments. I am all for glamour and looking good if that's how you choose to dress, I would definitely like to be more that way! But isn't there looking glamorous and looking a bit rude? Although the 'Menz' like this apparently Grin

Some of the mums look fantastic in the morning at our school and wear heels etc, some of us look a bit scruffy and thrown together that's fine too.

The consensus is I am bit unreasonable to ponder on this but am allowed to as this is the point of AIBU! I don't really care that much about what we wear it was late and I like mumsnetting Grin

I think too much flesh was on display and the outfit wasn't at all nice, not for the kids really to see that! If tights were worn or legs looked after and bum not out I probably wouldn't have noticed.

Squeaky do you really have photos?? How funny!!

I used to wear hot pants on the school run, but I was 21/22 and had great legs! (if I do say so myself) I'm now 6months pregnant and couldn't fit my fat arse in my hot pants I'd I tried Sad

alienreflux · 13/09/2012 08:08

ah how i wish i could wear hot pants!! if i could in general, then i would for school run?! is there a massive distinction between shorts and hot pants then? we are only really talking an inch surely? and i hate the fact some people think as soon as you have kids, you have to start dressing like anne widdecombe (sp) :)

ENormaSnob · 13/09/2012 08:14

Even when I had fab legs I just wouldn't on the school run.

TalHotBrunette · 13/09/2012 08:16

In the height of summer I have been known to wear denim shorts with a long top and flipflops. They aren't exactly bum skimming or ott but oh God I'm that mum aren't I?!

TalHotBrunette · 13/09/2012 08:21

By the height of summer I mean not a rainy September morning... Grin

Some of the mums wear their slippers to and from the car here. Grin

LaurieFairyCake · 13/09/2012 08:22

I don't care if it was the school run, I just can't see a reason to wear hotpants ever in the morning - maybe all make-up upped with high heels in a nightclub but not in the morning.

sherbetpips · 13/09/2012 08:25

Anyone read easy living magazine? They have a school gates fashion article every issue. They must only go to the poshest of schools cos they all look like they just stepped out of selfridges - we should all write in and get them to come to our school gates, at mine a little more primarny than Armani!
