I iron everything apart from socks. I don't complain about it.

I don't care if anyone else irons or not. I believe that it is possible to not iron and be crease free and presentable but I've yet to see evidence. Every one of my friends who don't iron it's fairly obvious but if they're happy I'm happy.

What drives me mad with frustration makes me a bit annoyed are those people who crow about the fact that they don't iron "but no one can tell". We can tell, we're just too polite to say so.

jelliebelly · 06/09/2012 18:15

YABU - I am in awe of anybody who has time in their lives to iron underwear..

My friend doesn't iron. But she has a bizarre process with involves washing clothes. Taking them out, laying them flat, smoothing creases, rolling clothes into tight little tubes, then packing the tumble dryer with the tubes and drying them.

She lives alone. This process takes a hour of smoothing - we wont even talk about her electric bill.

She could have ironed in 1/3rd of the time.

DeliaMcNab · 06/09/2012 18:45

Jumping that's extremely intriguing.

Where does her bizarre interesting method originate? Hoe foes she secure the tubes? I can't think if any method that wouldn't put in more creases!

paperclips · 06/09/2012 18:47

Ironing underwear is ridiculous and pointless. Unless you genuinely gain pleasure from ironing, which strikes me as weird, but each to their own....

Some things crease more than others. These things NEED ironing: cotton shirts, my nurse's uniform, bed linen, smart trousers.

Other things just don't: Jeans, Stretchy fabrics, most knitwear apart from very fine-knits.

Casual T-shirts and tops - sometimes need ironing....depends how quickly you get them hung up after washing, and how heavy the fabric is and what kind of style they are. Leave them in the washer after it's finished and they will definitely need ironing.

I rarely iron much other than my work uniforms. DH's work has a casual dress-code so wears jeans, Tshirts, etc for work, few of his clothes need ironing. Very few of my clothes need ironing. In the days when I used to do an office job in smart clothes I seemed to do a lot more ironing.

Hate it. Maybe if I liked watching TV I'd tolerate ironing more.

DeliaMcNab · 06/09/2012 18:50

Devon I fear that one day someone will spout this self edvidently untrue smuggery at me at an inopportune moment and I will break and be honest. Then I will be wrong for being mean and have to apologise.

Lara2 · 06/09/2012 20:02

Yes, YABU :). That's why tumble dryers were invented!

Otheregos · 06/09/2012 20:14

I don't iron and haven't for years, my mum got fed up of my ds looking crumpled..his clothes that is that she offered to do his ironing for me Smile it would have been rude to refuse Grin

sugarice · 06/09/2012 20:27

I worked with a woman a long time ago and when we chatted about ironing she said 'always iron your underwear every time, it kills the bugs' Shock. I do iron undies when they're line dried.

Bingdweller · 06/09/2012 20:35

I love ironing... If it has been washed, it will get ironed [embarrassed] even dishcloths.

I can tell when people haven't ironed too. My DH has been cursing me the past few weeks as I am laid up with a badly broken ankle and he is on ironing duty. I gave him the option of just doing uniforms and t-shirts but it seems he is used to everything being done....

"Kills the bugs" Hmm

Inneedofbrandy · 06/09/2012 20:50

I iron everything of mine but knickers.. I iron my bed once it's made, so just the top of duvet cover and pillows. Don't do the kids bedding though.

Zara1984 · 06/09/2012 20:52

YABU!!! Life is too short to do that much ironing!!!!

invicta · 06/09/2012 20:54

My dc's school shirts are meant to be 'non-iron', but even they need ironing.

Thumbwitch · 07/09/2012 08:08

Who actually cares if you can tell someone's clothes haven't been ironed? If you're going to be snooty about other people's clothes being ironed or not, then that's your look out. I couldn't give a rat's arse what you think about it.

Ephiny · 07/09/2012 08:40

I'm sure people can tell my clothes are not ironed, it doesn't bother me though, and I can't imagine why anyone would care Confused.

VinegarTits · 07/09/2012 09:03

There are far more 'ironers' on MN than there used to be, i remember my very frist ironing thread i was shot down in flames and made to feel like a frreak for ironing Grin so im loving all the ironers on here

incidently, i came home from work yesterday to find a pile of freshly ironed laundry in my kitchen, my mum had been in (she lives next door) and done it all for me, even my knickers! she must know about the bugs already Grin

I don't iron anything, ever.

On a recent visit, mother-in-law brought and iron with her to leave with us "in case ours was broken". Do you think she's trying to tell me something? Smile

MummyDoIt · 07/09/2012 09:11

I iron pretty much everything (including some underwear) but really don't mind doing it and never complain about it. I find it quite relaxing if I've got the radio on as well. I also hang things in my wardrobe by category (all shirts together, then all skirts and so on) and the hangers all have to face the same way.

I'm not as bad as my mum, though. She irons socks! And has a system for hanging clothes - blouses on blue hangers, dresses on green ones, trousers on red ones, etc.

BigBoobiedBertha · 07/09/2012 09:30

Doesn't everybody hang their clothes up facing the same way and grouped by type? ConfusedWink

I like this thread. My laundry and wardrobe practices are actually make me eel like I am very domestically competent at least as far as laundry is concerned if you ignore the piles waiting to be ironed. Shame my high standards don't apply to the rest of the housework but we'll gloss over that. Smile

Ephiny · 07/09/2012 09:34

MIL gave me her 'spare' iron when I moved in with DH Hmm. I think it's in a cupboard somewhere, haven't seen it for years, though I believe it still has a chunk of the melted blouse stuck to it.

It's honestly better that I don't iron. I make things worse.
