To think Stephen Fry is NOT a national treasure

Just listening to his English Delight on Radio4. Dire.

I've never understood all the adulation around him. He is accomplished, well-spoken, prolific. But so are many other actors and authors.

His TV documentaries, especially are really meh.. Dont get me wrong, they are very well made (the one where he travels America, another one on languages), but what exactly is the Stephen Fry touch? Any other knowledgeable presenter could fill his shoes and no one would know the difference...Only liked him as Melchett. Lost all respect for him when he started wittering away posting on Twitter, to be honest.

Yanbu. He is a sex-obsessed twerp.

EasilyBored · 04/09/2012 22:26

Am I the only one who finds him strangely sexy?

WillNeverGetALicence · 04/09/2012 22:32

YANBU.

He is a pompous self satisfied twat.

Julie Burchill had it right imo. I get that some on here find him entertaining but puhleese he really is non great shakes intelligence wise.

He is in my room 101 alongside Russell Brand and Boris Johnson. Two other verbose self important males who love the sound of their own voice and inexplicably are deemed to be both clever and sexy Hmm

kweggie · 04/09/2012 22:33

eeek, easilyBored, the answer is probably YES!!!

out2lunch · 04/09/2012 22:34

i agree with julie

wolvesdidit · 04/09/2012 22:36

How can you be attracted to a man who claimed that women don't like sex? Yuck.

NigellasGuest · 04/09/2012 22:37

How is he mysoginist? (or however you spell that)

MsVestibule · 04/09/2012 22:37

I've always loved Stephen Fry, even more so since I read his autobiographies. He's very honest, knows he comes across as smug, but is unable to do anything about it!

He was also one of the first people in the public eye (that I can remember, anyway) to "admit" to suffering from depression, thus raising it's profile and making it a bit more of an acceptable illness, rather than something to be ashamed of.

EasilyBored · 04/09/2012 22:39

I wasn't aware he had said that, I thought he said that he wasn't likely to know if they did?

I find him really funny and articulate, which is maybe a soft spot for me.

NotGeoffVader · 04/09/2012 22:39

Well, some women don't like sex. Some men don't like sex. Perhaps he meant that women don't like sex with him. I don't care!
I enjoy reading his autobiographies, and think he's done a great deal for television and radio.

And what MrsVestibule said ^ there

GhostShip · 04/09/2012 22:40

He's brilliant.

I think you just have to 'get' him. I understand how he can come across as pompous to some people but that's just how he is.

I like how he's willing to talk about his depression and bi-polar, unapologetically.

GhouliaYelps · 04/09/2012 22:40

Complete misogynist. I watched an interview with him
About 15 yrs ago -before he blew up- and I was appalled at what he said about women. I won't repeat it but it was truly vile and I was shocked the interviewer just winced and didn't say anything.

He has also said some awful things about women and sex drive. Agree with Julie he is not all that basically !

Alameda · 04/09/2012 22:40

how would he know whether women like sex? Hmm

AugustMoon · 04/09/2012 22:43

He's pompous, and QI is

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 04/09/2012 22:43

His first autobiography was a triumph, the second part was a pile of passive aggressive self congratulatory snobbishness. And QI is unbearable. A Bit of Fry and Laurie was genius though.

WillNeverGetALicence · 04/09/2012 22:45

QI is one of the most banal irritating programs on tv.

NotGeoffVader · 04/09/2012 22:45

He has had sex with a woman - however, I suspect that what he said 15 years ago is rather removed from what he would say now.

I still luffs him though, whatever anyone else says.

MrsHelsBels74 · 04/09/2012 22:45

I'm sure I said a few dreadful things 15 years ago!

I like him. I don't see him as smug at all, he always seems charming to me. Have never liked Julie Burchill ever, she's come out with some terribly ignorant crap. And I haven't like Sandy Toksvig since she said at one London Pride march that straight people should donate more as 'it's not your day'...way to promote integration there Sandy.

SnowWide · 04/09/2012 22:47

Stephen Fry
Goes on Qi
............

OP posts:
Mintyy · 04/09/2012 22:50

15 years ago he was almost 40! Not excuse for being a sexist twat.

SnowWide · 04/09/2012 22:50

Sorry that was for kweggie Grin

Stephen Fry
Goes on Qi
Also on "Sorry, I havent got a clue"
Which is also how I feel about him, its true.
Acted in Fry and Laurie
But Hugh was the real star, sorry...!

Not award-winning stuff, but its coming up to midnight and my contacts are itchy...

OP posts:
HappyAsChips · 04/09/2012 22:50

Frankly, he could be the devil incarnate and I'd still love him.

degutastic · 04/09/2012 22:54

I like him, I don't find him excessively smug or unbearable. I think he comes over very well, often sensitive and tactful, at other times cheeky and entertaining. It's all very well saying that quiz show hosts have the answers on a card, but QI does deal with more complex topics where a reasonable degree of intelligence is essential to be able to deliver any answer or explanation, even if the facts are on the card.

I also love his fiction and loved him in A bit of Fry and Laurie partly because I want to do naughty things to Hugh

hiddenhome · 04/09/2012 22:58

I felt Sad when I saw one of his tirades against the Catholic Church on Youtube. I'm a Catholic, and we're not all evil, brainwashed child abusers. I've met some lovely people at Church and it was hurtful to hear him ranting about us like that.

Even dh went off him after seeing it and he was quite a fan prior to seeing the rant. (dh isn't even Catholic either)

blueemerald · 04/09/2012 22:59

Yes, OP, thank god. It's a script. It's a script. It's a script. He's a character. It's like saying Del Boy is a national treasure. Plus SF is a twice expelled convicted criminal, hardly a role model.
