To think Stephen Fry is NOT a national treasure

Just listening to his English Delight on Radio4. Dire.

I've never understood all the adulation around him. He is accomplished, well-spoken, prolific. But so are many other actors and authors.

His TV documentaries, especially are really meh.. Dont get me wrong, they are very well made (the one where he travels America, another one on languages), but what exactly is the Stephen Fry touch? Any other knowledgeable presenter could fill his shoes and no one would know the difference...Only liked him as Melchett. Lost all respect for him when he started wittering away posting on Twitter, to be honest.

Never did like Julie Burchill

RagingDull · 04/09/2012 21:49

i begrudgingly like julie burchill - begrudgingly.

but you being unreasonable. I like stephen fry.

wolvesdidit · 04/09/2012 21:50

He is a posh (apparently often rude) misogynist. He's is not avuncular or kind or an intellectual - that is his TV persona. I don't like him. He's too far up his own jacksie.

pictish · 04/09/2012 21:50

Mmm...I don't like Julie Birchill either. She is just charmless somehow.

R4 · 04/09/2012 21:59

I have gone off SF. He hasn't helped himself by committing the sin of ubiquity, which takes the shine off anyone.

Robert Robinson once said that it was a great move to become the host of a quiz show - everyone thinks that you are brainy because you know all the answers. They seem to forget that you have it all written on a card, and that you see that card before the show so you can research info to throw in as 'ad libs'.

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 04/09/2012 22:02

No fan of burchill either but if she said that, I agree with her on that at least. He's lost a lot of his charm as far as I'm concerned in recent years.

HappyAsChips · 04/09/2012 22:05

How very dare you!! YABVU! Stephen Fry is a complex, charming, wonderful man and anyone who thinks he's rude or misogynistic (eh??) clearly knows nothing about him. So there!

secretlyahippy · 04/09/2012 22:05

He is a treasure, I luffs him too. How low of Julie Birchill - its like the bullies in school 'you can't like him as that means youre stupid'. Tcht. Shame on you Julie. Stephen Fry is marvellous.

Agree with Pictish about Barbara Winsor, she should emigrate. That awful laugh of hers makes me want to repeatedly hit my head against a wall.

WhatYouLookingAt · 04/09/2012 22:06

yabvu. of course he is a national treasure, do you want the likes of towie and celeb bb to be the "celebrities" you are known for, as opposed to an actual clever, witty, interesting person like Stephen Fry?

LilyCocoplatt · 04/09/2012 22:07

YANBU, I don't really get all the Fry hype either, I'm a bit meh about him really, but then I'm not that clever and his shows tend to make me feel thick so maybe that's why.

kweggie · 04/09/2012 22:09

Loved him in 'Blackadder'. He has slowly morphed into a parody of himself. Think he would be a yawn at dinner parties....SOZ!

Julie Burchill is terrible and wonderful simultaneously!

SnowWide · 04/09/2012 22:10

Was planning to hit the sack, but Alameda pulled me back. Licked his ear?!! Shock

r4 knows what I am about. You already know the script, so what makes you different? How do you know Fry is erudite or if he is just being handed a lovely script by his production team?

And I think the quote was something like "Stephen Fry = the stupid person's clever man"

OP posts:
kweggie · 04/09/2012 22:11

If he was in a Dickens novel he would be called something like Sir Sleighly Unctious of Noitt Hall.......

drjohnsonscat · 04/09/2012 22:13

I agree. I find him smug and supercilious. I am a Stephen Fry denier. That looks like a new brand of tights Confused

Don't like that Dara O'Briain either. V pleased with himself.

SnowWide · 04/09/2012 22:14

Agree with Kim. See, I luurved Micahel Palin's Himalaya. Couldnt get enough of it. Fry travels to exotic locales as well, but still its tedious watching him...

And yes, I nominate Sandi Toksvig for national treasure - if only for her "n in cuts " jibe Grin

TunipTheVegemal · 04/09/2012 22:14

LOL Kweggie. So true.

QI is dreadful.

BumsyClugger · 04/09/2012 22:15

YABU - I love him, he is also one of my ultimate dinner party guests. I love him on TV and I've read nearly all his books and I love them too. His sense of humour is right up my street.

Alameda - You licked the inside of his ear?? How? Why? Please explain....

NorksAreMessy · 04/09/2012 22:17

YABU

If he had just done the one journey saving thing of reading ALL of Harry Potter aloud to help me get DC from A to B for the whole of their childhood, that would be enough to make him a treasure, but there does OTHER STUFF as well (America, QI, crap novels etc)
I am a fan

EverythingsNotRosie · 04/09/2012 22:17

I can't bear Stephen Fry. Odious. And self-congratulatory. I am aware this is an unpopular opinion and do not voice it often!

He always looks like he could do with a good bath and hair wash.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 04/09/2012 22:24

I couldn't get any further than 'he's up there with Sandi Toskvig'.

Sandi Toskvig is awful, she was on some children's show when I was little and she used to give me the heebie jeebies. She's plain, wierd, not even vaguely funny, and she still creeps me out.

Stephen Fry on the other hand is awesome.

kweggie · 04/09/2012 22:24

Stephen Fry
Goes on Qi
............

please feel free to add your own lines to this verse. I was trying to find rhymes for 'ego' and/or 'verbiage'- but it's cocoa time and I'm tired......
