Depends what it is? Are we talking Dolly, or going more alt-country with a bit of Ryan Adams? :)

Happybunny12 · 03/09/2012 16:21

Yes YABU. It's rubbish Grin

polkadotsrock · 03/09/2012 16:23

It's like a dolly/tammy tag team in my living room right now!! Am expecting Kenny any minute...

EnglishGirlApproximately · 03/09/2012 16:30

Dolly and Tammy are ok with me but I might draw the line at Kenny! There was me thinking I might have found an alt-country fan about to out themselves.
Just me then? Blush

polkadotsrock · 03/09/2012 16:33

I'm willing to try English- I mean how much worse could things get in here??

YANBU I love Kenny, I have seen him live 3 times and he is brilliant. I love blasting out a bit of country music, sometimes theres just nothing else for it Grin

LovelyMarchHare · 03/09/2012 16:39

I love country music and am not remotely ashamed. Either old country (Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, George Jones etc) or alt country (Gillian Welch, Handsome Family, Alison Krauss, Ryan Adams). Not the 'hat acts' (Garth Brooks et al). Though I've a sneaky fondness for Randy Travis and Alan Jackson and they are a bit in that genre. So, crack on is what I'd say.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 03/09/2012 16:41

Ok - well if you want seriously depressing

Or just bloody genuis

Or beautiful

Think I may be a bit of a fan!

polkadotsrock · 03/09/2012 16:42

Ooooh missy I am so jealous!! Coward of the County live would be a dream for me!

YANBU

Good country is fab.

I mean good country mind you not country delivered by teenage poppy princess types.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 03/09/2012 16:45

Country music is very misunderstood. People think of Billy Ray Cyrus and write it off.

SirEdmundFrillary · 03/09/2012 16:46

Get in touch with your feelings by all means but know when to reign it in too.

missymoomoomee · 03/09/2012 16:51

Polka I won't lie, it was amazing, The Gambler had everyone up on their feet and tbh I don't even know if he was singing or not it was so loud. For a guy his age he puts on an brilliant show. Coward of the County was fantastic and Lady, as always, gives me chills. Love his newer stuff too. If you get the chance you should go and see him.

Agree with Indith about the teenage 'making country hip' princesses, I loathe them.

polkadotsrock · 03/09/2012 16:51

What a lovely voice he had English, and that really was beautiful. I will revisit but tbh it's lacking the singalongable-ity that I require right now. Off to YouTube 'I loved her first' for a quick cry then i promise to reign it in Sir (and save my poor ds)

Dolly is and always will be my favourite musician of ALL TIME

EnglishGirlApproximately · 03/09/2012 17:05

I am Dolly on karaoke after a few Wine

hippermiddleton · 03/09/2012 17:06

No matter how bad your day was, it'll have been much worse for them. You Broke My Heart (During My Lunch Break); You're My Guilty Secret (Santa); H.U.M.A.N. R.E.S.O.U.R.C.E.S; etc.

hippermiddleton · 03/09/2012 17:07

(Disclaimer: I really like country music, the more tragic the better)

DoMeDon · 03/09/2012 17:07

Excellent - I channel Dolly whenever I hit a rough patch 'I got jesus and graviteeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeyyy'

CaliforniaLeaving · 03/09/2012 17:21

YABVVU.
It's too depressing, the dog dies, his wife leaves with the kids and the truck breaks down.
To top off his miserable life there's a crop in the field and hungry children involved somehow!

ComposHat · 03/09/2012 17:36

Exactly, I get really cross.

It is as blinkered as dismissing all pop music on the basis of the Bay City Rollers. Due to a few naff country pop acts and their (God, Guns and anti gay) hick fanbase -Garth Brooks and Toby Keith I'm looking at you - country music has this hugely undeserved reputation. No genre is better for articulating despair and regret. I've been listening to loads of Hank Williams of late and there's so much depth and bleakness in his records.

Aside from Hank, I love Silver Jews, Laura Cantrell, Gram Parsons, Bonnie Prince Billie, Johnny Cash, Skeeter Davis, The Czars and Emmylou Harris.

A few favourites

Bonnie Prince Billy

Laura Cantrell

Gram Parsons

Hank Williams

Patsy Cline

Silver Jews

EnglishGirlApproximately · 03/09/2012 17:42

Oh, I wasn't familiar with Silver Jews but thats fab! Great storytelling. Off to Itunes now!

OlaRapaceFru · 03/09/2012 17:44

Dolly Parton & Kenny Rogers - Islands In the Stream

I luffs it Grin

MammyToMany · 03/09/2012 17:45

I love country music. Not a fan of modern country though really. I prefer the Kenny Rogers type stuff.

I did listen to some Toby Keith not long ago though, it made me feel very (americanly) patriotic and I'm not even American!

UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 03/09/2012 17:50

Dwight Yoakim.

Country music genius.

You need the 'Gone' album in your life. AKA "music to feel stabby by"

It's all about how murderous he felt when Sharon Stone dumped him
