I'm about 6 weeks pregnant and work with three other girls.

I've told the two I get on with, I kind of had to because I was tasked with lifting some really heavy boxes and I said I couldn't and manager wanted to know why. (I've had 2 mc's so I'm really trying to be as careful as possible)

Anyway there's only one girl left who doesn't know and I don't want her to, at least not until its really obvious.

I'm not really very pally with her as she's quite two faced and she's quite centre of the universe.

She never has anything nice to say about anything and actually put in a complaint last Xmas because I couldn't work ( childcare being non existent) and her favourite comment is " well you should have thought about that before having him".

I feel like I'm justified in keeping it shtum

You don't need a wide knowledge of jobs to know nobody works 365 days a year. If employed thats illegal so must be self-employed and therefore idiotic.

squeakytoy · 01/09/2012 11:08

I assume your husband must be a farmer then? that is the only job I can think of that is 365 days a year

ExitStencilist · 01/09/2012 11:11

even farmers take holidays.

FutTheShuckUp · 01/09/2012 11:11

I dont want to expose anyone as a liar, its just the more you type the more unbelievable it all seems.
To answer your OP, YANBU to not tell one colleague. But I can see why she is annoyed by your attitude.

WorraLiberty · 01/09/2012 11:11

If you don't tell her you're pregnant, then the chances are someone else will.

But I can't (from what you've said) imagine she'll be fussed one way or another.

I find this a bit strange though..."another reason for not telling is because if the conversation doesn't revolve around her then she will just be negative about it and if she says one negative thing about it I think I would probably explode"

Why would you explode if someone says something negative? Confused

squeakytoy · 01/09/2012 11:12

farmers only take holidays if they can get cover, cows cant milk themselves..

SleepyFergus · 01/09/2012 11:13

Exit Biscuit

Women/girls - its a turn of phrase. Where I work we call ourselves 'girls' and none of us are under 18. So FFS get off that bandwagon.

ExitStencilist · 01/09/2012 11:13

The farmers I know have either farmhands, family, or even other farmers to take a hand.
And even if that was the case, you can keep your kid with you while milking the cows if your missus is at work.

FutTheShuckUp · 01/09/2012 11:14

If your DP works every day what will you do when it comes to having the baby?

DefinitelyDarwin · 01/09/2012 11:14

Futtheshutup, I have some carried over from last year.

I work 3 days a week standard and I'm doing two more days a week as overtime to meet our FTE budget. So over 30 days of holiday will give me 10 weeks, plus we can carry over a maximum of ten days next year so i'll have those too as I'm due in April.

Anyone want me to publish my contract whilst I'm at it? :)

ExitStencilist · 01/09/2012 11:15

I'll stay on the bandwagon thanks, some of us rather that the pejorative use of "girl" (which means young, immature, underage female) is not used. You knock yourself out with the fluffy if you like, I'd rather not.

SleepyFergus · 01/09/2012 11:18

Why is everyone being so picky on this thread?
Worra presumably the OP would 'explode' because it's not nice to say something negative about a pregnancy to a pregnant woman. It's uncalled for and just nasty. And why burst someone's happy bubble just for the sake of it?

DefinitelyDarwin · 01/09/2012 11:18

Fut we are hoping to move nearer to DPs mum by the time I'm due, which also means he will leave his work and take up a different career which I'm stoked about.

I'm probably being hormonal here but I'm going to leave this thread as I don't really know what I've done wrong here. :(

JumpingThroughMoreHoops · 01/09/2012 11:19

exit that's your prerogative, but don't presume to tell the rest of us what terminology we should use.

Ooh lets have a wimmins night out - er no thanks. It's quite a derogatory turn of phrase in these parts.

SleepyFergus · 01/09/2012 11:19

Wow exit you sound like a right barrel of laughs. Hmm

Fluffy indeed! Ha ha

squeakytoy · 01/09/2012 11:19

So he isnt a farmer then... in which case I cant see why he has to work 365 days a year.

WorraLiberty · 01/09/2012 11:22

Worra presumably the OP would 'explode' because it's not nice to say something negative about a pregnancy to a pregnant woman. It's uncalled for and just nasty. And why burst someone's happy bubble just for the sake of it?

Yes but it's nothing to explode about if someone who you know doesn't like you, says something negative.

It's far better to focus on the people who are happy for the OP...of which I'm sure there are plenty.

FutTheShuckUp · 01/09/2012 11:22

Well maybe your colleague is a megabitch and you dont owe her anything so dont tell her, but maybe your attitude regarding having kids and being pregnant meaning your colleagues have to pick up the slack for you just pisses her off and she is brave enough to voice that.

ExitStencilist · 01/09/2012 11:23

I am. I'm just not a "girl". Wouldn't want to live round your parts if Women is a derogatory phrase. Must be some shit-hole.

OP, he doesn't work 365 days a year, really, does he?

msrisotto · 01/09/2012 11:24

"Woman/Women" is a derogatory turn of phrase???????? Fucking hell, i've heard it all now! Who says society isn't misogynistic?!

gordyslovesheep · 01/09/2012 11:25

DARWIN I would point out to you that I have not posted on this thread so kindly keep your personal slights to your self - thank you :)

gettingagrip · 01/09/2012 11:27

YAalsoBU to use 'pens it up' and 'stoked about it'.

crashdollGOLD · 01/09/2012 11:31

Wow, what a nasty thread! OP, sorry you've been given such a hard time. YANBU to not tell this one colleague.

princelypurpleparrot · 01/09/2012 11:33

What is wrong with people this morning?

OP tell who you like, it's your pg. And step away from here....

JumpingThroughMoreHoops · 01/09/2012 11:33

"wimmin" often over heard, in the shit-holes I occasionally drink in Grin by knob head blokes who, upon taking their "birds" out, poke them in the corner and mutter between them selves "better get the wimmin a drink". It is the tone in which "wimmin" is said. But that is unfortunately the tone and terminology 20-somethings use
