To ask Mumsnet to go GOLD for September?

Tonight, three years ago, at around this time, my DH, DD and I were about to sit down to dinner when we received a phone call to tell us that a doctor was on her way to speak to us urgently. DD had had a blood test that morning to see why her persistent viral symptoms were dragging on for a few weeks. When the doctor arrived she sat all three of us down and told us that our little 3yo girl had cancer - leukaemia.

September is internationally recognised as Childhood Cancer Awareness month and also Leukaemia Awareness month (although some UK charities use December for Childhood Cancer). Success rates are rising all the time, and currently stand at around 80%, but a big part of this is catching cancers early before they have time to spread. Raising awareness through Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is crucial, and can save lives.

The awareness colour for Childhood Cancer is gold, and for Leukaemia is orange. Can I ask as many of you as possible to change your names to include gold or orange for September and to visit the link below to find out more about the signs and symptoms of childhood cancer so that if a child you know is that one in 500 diagnosed with cancer before their 15th birthday, they have the best chance possible of beating it. The government provides no funding to raising awareness of childhood cancers, so it is up to everyone else to make sure the knowledge is out there.

DD is in remission and doing well after two years of constant chemotherapy, but this month we will especially be thinking of the families we know who were not so lucky. DD lost a lovely friend at the beginning of the summer - her cancer was missed despite numerous visits to the GP until it had spread, and although she battled so very bravely and with huge spirit for 3 years, the cancer could not be beaten. For the less common cancers especially, GPs may only see one in their whole career, so it is important that as many of us know the signs and symptoms as possible to give every child affected the best chance they can.

Thinking very much also of MrsDeVere and Expat and your beautiful, darling girls, and the other parents on MN whose kids have fought, are still fighting or who have passed to childhood cancer. Sadly, there are far too many of you to name you all here.

Thanks

Quick reminder

If you are a blood donor you can join the British Bone Marrow Registry (run by the NHS Blood and Transplant Service) up to (and including) the age of 49

www.nhsbt.nhs.uk/bonemarrow/qa/index.asp#howcan

If a donor is needed both the AN and BBMR lists are searched - you only need to be registered with one of them.

FarloWearsAGoldRibbon · 07/09/2012 15:03

Also please be aware that cord blood is often used for transplants for young children with leukaemia - a beautiful little girl on our ward's life was saved that way! If you know someone due to give birth at one of these centres, their happy day meeting their baby could also save someone else's:

Anthony Nolan Centres
Birmingham Women?s Hospital
King?s College Hospital
The Royal Free Hospital in London
Leicester Royal Infirmary
Leicester General Hospital

NHS Centres
Barnet General Hospital
Luton and Dunstable Hospital
St George's Hospital
Northwick Park Hospital
Watford General Hospital
University College Hospital

Just a bump because it's a glorious golden day and no child should be stuck in hospital on days like today or ever.

I'd like to change my name but when I try to on my registration page the scroll bar at the side of the screen disappears and I cannot hit any kind of 'ok' or 'submit' or 'save' button.

I'm using Google Chrome, if that makes a difference. I'll try later on IE.

Goldenjubilee10 · 08/09/2012 14:35

Done

GoldJammySplodger · 08/09/2012 14:43

Done. DH lost an older brother to childhood cancer. Always something at the back of my mind with our two DSs, never know what's hereditary or not.

twoGoldfingerstoGideon · 08/09/2012 14:44

Too old to be a bone marrow donor Sad, but already a regular blood donor Smile and now have a shiny new name.

FarloWearsAGoldRibbon · 08/09/2012 17:28

Thanks everyone. You are not too late, Gold Ribbon Day is on Wednesday the 12th, so you're even still in time for that.

Very sorry about your DH's brother, GoldJammySplodger. FWIW from the research I have seen, most childhood cancers seem to be caused by genetic changes within the individual's own cells, either just as rotten luck in a cell division or sometimes in response to a virus or other external factors, and are not heritable. They have discovered some genes that make people more susceptible to childhood ALL, which my DD had, but the risk is still low even for carriers of it. It is good for everyone to be cautious and keep an eye out for their children developing the signs and symptoms, but the vast majority of people I know with a child with cancer have no other close family members who have had a related illness.

Boomerwang I have had that issue with Chrome before, it's very annoying! I usually get around it by zooming out on the page through the tools menu.
