To ask Mumsnet to go GOLD for September?

Tonight, three years ago, at around this time, my DH, DD and I were about to sit down to dinner when we received a phone call to tell us that a doctor was on her way to speak to us urgently. DD had had a blood test that morning to see why her persistent viral symptoms were dragging on for a few weeks. When the doctor arrived she sat all three of us down and told us that our little 3yo girl had cancer - leukaemia.

September is internationally recognised as Childhood Cancer Awareness month and also Leukaemia Awareness month (although some UK charities use December for Childhood Cancer). Success rates are rising all the time, and currently stand at around 80%, but a big part of this is catching cancers early before they have time to spread. Raising awareness through Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is crucial, and can save lives.

The awareness colour for Childhood Cancer is gold, and for Leukaemia is orange. Can I ask as many of you as possible to change your names to include gold or orange for September and to visit the link below to find out more about the signs and symptoms of childhood cancer so that if a child you know is that one in 500 diagnosed with cancer before their 15th birthday, they have the best chance possible of beating it. The government provides no funding to raising awareness of childhood cancers, so it is up to everyone else to make sure the knowledge is out there.

DD is in remission and doing well after two years of constant chemotherapy, but this month we will especially be thinking of the families we know who were not so lucky. DD lost a lovely friend at the beginning of the summer - her cancer was missed despite numerous visits to the GP until it had spread, and although she battled so very bravely and with huge spirit for 3 years, the cancer could not be beaten. For the less common cancers especially, GPs may only see one in their whole career, so it is important that as many of us know the signs and symptoms as possible to give every child affected the best chance they can.

Thinking very much also of MrsDeVere and Expat and your beautiful, darling girls, and the other parents on MN whose kids have fought, are still fighting or who have passed to childhood cancer. Sadly, there are far too many of you to name you all here.

Thanks

Couthy I'm so very sorry to hear that. She was the same age as my DD who is still fighting this shitty disease. I hope your DD is okay.

FarloWearsAGoldRibbon · 01/09/2012 10:31

Thanks all.

I remember your thread Couthy and I hope your DD is doing OK and starting back to school without her best friend is not too terribly hard for her.

Done.

My DS has just finished 3 years and 3 months of treatment for leukaemia. Fingers crossed that he will never, ever, ever get it back.

Done. Usually SerialKipper, btw. There are enough Kippers on MN to feed a family of six...

OrangeKipper · 01/09/2012 15:44

Still thinking of Aillidh, expat. And of all the other MN families going through it all, adults and children.

OrangeOsc · 01/09/2012 16:40

Done :)

MrsTerryPratchett · 01/09/2012 16:42

I think this is a great idea. I hope all the families on MN know people are thinking of them. I woke up at 3am thinking MrsTerrysChocolateOrange. Does that work or is it too long?

flyoverthegoldenhill · 01/09/2012 16:51

mrsterrypratchett mrsterryschocolateorange sounds vairy naice!

sausageandorangepickle · 01/09/2012 16:55

Good luck to all these DC.

flyoverthegoldenhill · 01/09/2012 17:02

it did workmrsterryschocolateorange and it looks very pretty and autumnal, don't you just love this time of year

MrsTerrysChocolateOrange · 01/09/2012 17:14

Oh yes. So glad it worked. There have been so many threads on here recently saying how mean and cruel MN people are. I hope all those with DC going through this know that the nest of vipers is pulling for them.

FarloWearsAGoldRibbon · 01/09/2012 17:36

Congratulations to your DS MsNobodyIsOrangeAgain. I hope life will be very very kind to him from now on.

Thank you GoldenAutumn

You're safe with me OrangeKipper, I'm vegetarian. MrsTerrysChocolateOrange however is making me very hungry and I cannot guarantee her safety at all...

Thinking of your DN sausageandorangepickle, I wish him all the very best.

Thanks everyone

Couldn't watch all the video, still too raw. Will name change for sure :)

StinkyGOLDfeet · 01/09/2012 18:02

I've gone gold for my brave and beautiful 9 yr old ds1. 51 weeks ago he was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour the size of an apricot. After 9 hours of surgery, 6 weeks of radiotherapy, 6 cycles of chemo, we are 2 cycles and 3 months away from the end of treatment.

I've also gone gold for every other child affected by cancer, including the brothers and sisters who also have their worlds turned upside down.

Good on you Farlo for starting this thread.

AwesomeOrange · 01/09/2012 18:04

Done Smile
