I don't know if this is a u.k wide thing but here in Glasgow so many people call a baby's dummy a tit or titty. It sounds vile .I used to hate it when my little ones had dummies and some old man would bend over the Pram and say " awww baby are you sucking your tit"?

YANBU! Yuck!

TheHeirOfSlytherin · 31/08/2012 18:54

Never heard of this, but a teat on a bottle is also a nipple so maybe it is like that? But slightly cruder Grin

rubyslippers · 31/08/2012 18:55

Have never, ever heard it called that

MrsRajeshKoothrappali · 31/08/2012 18:55

Suppose if everyone there does it then it's not so bad.

Round here you'd get looked at like this Hmm .

TidyDancer · 31/08/2012 18:55

I've heard of it being called this, but I thought it was American.

YANBU, it's awful

scentednappyhag · 31/08/2012 18:55

My dad (from Greenock) used to call them a 'dummy tit', but never just 'tit' on it's own. That was reserved for people who didn't indicate Grin

I call it that! Grin

I never did it in public because it does sound horrible. It's all my dads fault - he calls it that I 'caught' it from him. Blush

I'm from Edinburgh so maybe a Scottish thing?

AgentZigzag · 31/08/2012 18:56

I suppose theoretically they're right, but it's not something that should be brought up in polite company really Grin

tittytittyhanghang · 31/08/2012 18:57

Ha thats funny, lots of people call it that where i live (angus) but it tends to be the older generation. Im happy calling it a sookie dum or dum dum :)

FannyFifer · 31/08/2012 18:57

Dummy tit is sometimes used here.

Suppose it just described what it is. Smile

Bingdweller · 31/08/2012 18:57

Yes, a Scottish thing I think! My MIL calls it a titty and I cringe every time. She does correct herself now though to dummy.

Rubirosa · 31/08/2012 18:57

Dummy is short for "dummy tit" and is just a nipple replacement anyway...

MotherOfNations · 31/08/2012 18:58

Then surely it's a dummy teat and not tit. Tit just seems so crude.

Athendof · 31/08/2012 18:58

You are so entirely and most completely reasonable

minikimmi · 31/08/2012 18:59

Always been a dummy tit round these parts. Horrid expression for a horrid thing.

MotherOfNations · 31/08/2012 18:59

Titty is even worse

OP posts:
OvO · 31/08/2012 19:01

It does start to sound lovely and innocent once you start using it. When your toddler asks where his titty is it only sound nice. We're all just used to hearing it in the context of some arse shouting show us yer tits, iykwim.

I know you don't believe me and think it would always sound yuk. Grin

TheCunnyFunt · 31/08/2012 19:01

Never heard that before. It's horrible.

My mums american friend calls dummies 'pippies' for eg he said to DD 'Aww hey there DD, you got your pippy there?'

jaggythistle · 31/08/2012 19:02

i think I've heard dummy tit/teat somewhere over the years, but never tit on it's own!

i suppose it's the other side of the coin of people claiming that bf babies are using their mummy as a dummy. Confused

TheCunnyFunt · 31/08/2012 19:03

My MIL calls it a plug, for eg 'plug the baby up!'

MotherOfNations · 31/08/2012 19:03

Yip OvO you're right. I'll never get used to hearing it.

Dodie is what most of my Irish friends and family say.
