I don't know if this is a u.k wide thing but here in Glasgow so many people call a baby's dummy a tit or titty. It sounds vile .I used to hate it when my little ones had dummies and some old man would bend over the Pram and say " awww baby are you sucking your tit"?

I live in Glasgow and (used to) hear dummy tit, but never tit on its own (unless it's in the context of something like "GOAN AND BOLT, YA WEE TIT!")

Is that what you mean? Grin

MotherOfNations · 31/08/2012 20:32

Never heard nono before. What's the reasoning behind that one?

My Grandma always called it a titty.
It used to make me cringe but she was 90 years old and there was no telling her.

I think fondly of it now tbh.
My kids loved her to pieces and really miss her.

jaggythistle · 31/08/2012 20:34

tit as an insult I've heard lots, but never just calling a dummy a tit.

FannyFifer · 31/08/2012 20:35

Seriously though, how many Scottish folks are there on Mumsnet lately?
Never used to seem like there was a lot of us, now loads. Grin

MotherOfNations · 31/08/2012 20:35

PumpkinPositive. Heard that often too. Almost a term of endearment up here isn't it?

I've always thought dummy was short for 'dummy tit' but i'd never use tit on it's own...

[and yes, am scottish]

Shutupanddrive · 31/08/2012 20:39

No idea! I call it a nono with my boys as that's what we called it when we were little! Think it started off as dodo/e and was probably changed slightly! I sat next to a woman in specsavers not so long ago who heard me say to ds 'give me nono' and she said 'oh we call it a nono too', and had never heard anyone else call it that

HandMini · 31/08/2012 20:39

I think Americans call the binkies!

It's always been a dummy in our house....or sometimes dumbo, which makes me think of a fat little elephant.

jaggythistle · 31/08/2012 20:39

i do like the threads where we all bump into each other and talk about empire biscuits and what is currently ripping our knitting.

i am holding mn wholly responsible for me eating shitloads of tablet recently after reading too many mentions of it. i can report that the stuff at the checkout in Aldi is quite nice.

if i wasn't feeding a wee fat baby I'd be the size of the moon.

maybenow · 31/08/2012 20:40

and do you mean slavver-y dick/jock whatever (as in dribbly)
rather than slavery (as in the ownership of human beings)?

PumpkinPositive · 31/08/2012 20:40

Although no-one does it quite so well as The Wee Man, I find.

(bit off topic but definitely Glaswegian)

DowntonOut · 31/08/2012 20:41

I keep reading slavery as in slaves, but I assume you are referring to dribbles/mess? I know the Scottish word, but have no idea how I'd have spelled it. Not heard it teamed with dick either. Got to love some of the stuff auld Scottish grannies come out with Grin

rowingdowntheriver · 31/08/2012 20:42

Major flashback to my Scottish childhood where there was a rhyme that includes the phrase dummy tits. Must be a Scottish thing.

The rhyme was something along the lines of 'blah blah, blah, blah, your mummy cannae knit, your daddy cannae go to bed without a dummy tit'. If anyone knows the first bit, please let me know!

jaggythistle · 31/08/2012 20:42

aye, babies are fairly slavery beings.

MotherOfNations · 31/08/2012 20:43

Should really be spelt slavvery I suppose.

OP posts:
maybenow · 31/08/2012 20:43

tell tale tit, yer mammy cannae knit... Grin

FannyFifer · 31/08/2012 20:43

I made a big bloody batch of tablet after a previous thread which ended up a Scottish food chat.

maybenow · 31/08/2012 20:43

and I LOVE that 'yer mammy cannae knit' is the ultimate insult Grin

DowntonOut · 31/08/2012 20:44

Aw Jaggy, why did you have to go and mention tablet?

On the slavvery front, i'm now thinking slaetherin(g)? Slaetherin fool! Wink

PumpkinPositive · 31/08/2012 20:44

Tell tale tit, your mammy cannas knit

jaggythistle · 31/08/2012 20:45

I've never made it, it sounds hard! my shortbread is no bad though.

MotherOfNations · 31/08/2012 20:46

Tell tale tit your nanny cannae knit. Your daddy cannae go to bed without a dummy tit.

OP posts:
FannyFifer · 31/08/2012 20:46

Had never made it before, was surprisingly easy, although time consuming.
