I don't know if this is a u.k wide thing but here in Glasgow so many people call a baby's dummy a tit or titty. It sounds vile .I used to hate it when my little ones had dummies and some old man would bend over the Pram and say " awww baby are you sucking your tit"?

Quite alright. Grin

SchrodingersMew · 31/08/2012 19:33

I've lived in Glasgow my whole life and never heard a dummy being called a tit or titty. Confused

FrothyOM · 31/08/2012 19:34

YABU

Nothing vile about breasts. Dummies mimic the satisfaction that nature has programmed babies to get from sucking at the breast - there is something quite apt about the expression.

No there's nothing vile about breasts FrothyOM. It's just the word tit I find quite crude. If people called it a dummy breast It wouldn't jar in the sane way that tit does.

Soother is a nice expression.
Or pacifier.

Isn't didie a term they use in America...seem to remember it in a Judy Garland song "Born in a Trunk".

I am very old.

jaggythistle · 31/08/2012 20:05

bizarrely it's the plural versions that nip my head. tits or even worse titties.

the latter reminds me of a guy i once worked with, we shall call him only . (the internet was quite novel in them days and Google was but a beta version).

MADONION · 31/08/2012 20:12

YANBU! It does sound vile and it's quite common in Glasgow. I hear it all the time on the bus.

MotherOfNations · 31/08/2012 20:12

Jaggythistle. Quite agree nothing worse than a guy talking about your titties.

They used to be called a Dumb Tit (in them there olden days).

We always called them a Dodie (Irish family).

A Diddy is a breast in Ireland and Scotland afaik.

Saw on here recently someone refer to it as a "passie" Hmm Presumably short for pacifier which irrationally narked me to the point of clenching my jaw til my teeth ached.

I'd always called them a 'dodie'...but now call it a dummy, as DP hates that word.

Tit just sounds weird. I hate that Americans call bottle teats 'nipples' too.

MotherOfNations · 31/08/2012 20:25

HairyPoppins I keep visualising an actual slavery dick now.

Am I the only one that calls it a nono? MIL calls it a tit too, I hate it!

MotherOfNations · 31/08/2012 20:30

Jaggythistle a slavery dick IS a happy thought.
