To ask, if Britain's no longer 'Great' why do so many people want to live here?

I asked this on another forum a while back and had an interesting response. So thought I'd ask here...!
I hear so much moaning about life here in Britain; benefits system, the NHS, the government, the roads...etc etc etc... If it's really so bad though, why do so many people want to live here?

For the fish n chips. Definately the fish n chips.

LoopyLoopsOlympicHoops · 27/08/2012 10:23

The same reason they want to live in other developed country. They are less likely to die young. Their children will have an education.

RaisinDEtre · 27/08/2012 10:24

I would like you to expand upon this: ''why do so many people want to live here?''

thank you

BionicEmu · 27/08/2012 10:24

Because it's a lot worse elsewhere?

violathing · 27/08/2012 10:24

Generally we are a tolerant lot x equality of opportunity in theory at least with access to schools and NHL for everyone

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 27/08/2012 10:24

17 people beheaded in Afghanistan by the Taliban for going to a mixed sex party. I can see why people from Afghanistan would want to come here.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 27/08/2012 10:26

Many of us want to live here because we are British and this is our home, others who aren't from here want to live here because it's better than where they came from, and others who aren't here to take advantage of benefits and the NHS are here because it's a nice place to be if you rich.

Yes Bulldog, those Celts and Scandanavians were pesky weren't they? And as for the Romans!

Kladdkaka · 27/08/2012 10:27

Because Jezza isn't broadcast abroad, so they have to come here.

CocktailsAndFriedChicken · 27/08/2012 10:29

Wow bulldog that's a rather sweeping generalisation! Don't you realise Britain has been settled by people from all parts of the world for centuries? Many immigrants bring rich cultural traditions & knowledge with them. Goodness only knows there are enough home grown shitheads also.

bamboostalks · 27/08/2012 10:31

The benefit system is extraordinarily generous and the weather is not as bad as it is in other high benefit societies eg Sweden. It is still a financial centre.

StealthPolarBear · 27/08/2012 10:31

defintely the weather.

stargirl1701 · 27/08/2012 10:32

It is still 'Great' though. We just like moaning Grin I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. I would like more sunshine though!

Vagaceratops · 27/08/2012 10:33

NHS
Good Universities
Nice countryside

hackmum · 27/08/2012 10:33

The simple answer is that English is a second language throughout the world, so whether you're from Lithuania, Greece, Nigeria or Malaysia, you're much more likely to speak English than you are to speak, say, Swedish or Italian.

Kayano · 27/08/2012 10:33

Nhs

violathing · 27/08/2012 10:33

It probably is too full. We are a small island and there isnt enough resources for all now. Housing in particular, schools etc. the birth rate has risen dramatically recently and schools are bursting in some areas

Silibilimili · 27/08/2012 10:35

Those commenting on the benefit system (why immigrants are here). That's so DM. Do you know how hard it is to migrate here for economic reasons (rather than asylum?) and then claim benefits?
The asylum system in crap. It lets people scrounge. But the people who moved for economic reasons do not claim benefits and pay taxes. Go figure!

Kladdkaka · 27/08/2012 10:36

The benefit system is extraordinarily generous and the weather is not as bad as it is in other high benefit societies eg Sweden.

Whatcha talking about? We have glorious summers here, far warmer than the UK, and stunningly beautiful winters, although colder than the UK. What we don't have is endless days of grey, damp drizzle. I think the Swedish weather is far better than UK weather. and our benefits system is far more generous
