To be dreading to the point of tears this hen weekend...

I'm going to a hen w/e of a friend in the next couple of weeks. Even though i only know 2 of the 20 people going, even though it's in the arse-end of nowhere, EVEN THOUGH i come out in hives at the thought of hen party games, i was willing to go and damn well enjoy myself Smile

However, to compound the general misery of this hen weekend, it has been announced that there will be a fancy dress theme to our outing to the only club in Shitsville, the nearest place to our hotel. The theme is "all-American cheerleader" and i am absolutely dreading it. At present i'm a size 16-18 and as i said above, not the most outgoing.

AIBU to totally dread this to the point that i've been in tears over the thought of having to get dressed up and go. and AIBU to think that people who invent these fancy dress codes are just sadistic buggers?!

Yanbu. Pull a sickie like any sane person would.

NovackNGood · 18/08/2012 21:43

Abitlikechicken · 18/08/2012 21:45

Avoid, avoid, avoid! Sounds rubbish to me x

wisewomanmummy · 18/08/2012 21:46

Don't go through life people pleasing! Tell your friend that you hate hen do's and you're sure she understands, be nice but stick to your guns.
Then never go to another one!

LaurieFairyCake · 18/08/2012 21:46

Go as Sue Sylvester - she's fab. That's what I'd do and I'm way chubbier than you Grin

NovackNGood · 18/08/2012 21:46

In which case yes you are being unreasonable.

Flyonthewindscreen · 18/08/2012 21:47

Organiser v unfair to throw in the "all American cheerleader costume" detail in after you had paid up £150!

PinkFondantFancy · 18/08/2012 21:48

I agree, pull a sickie!

Beamur · 18/08/2012 21:48

Don't go in fancy dress. Just wear your own stuff.

Birdsgottafly · 18/08/2012 21:48

Can you not straight away re-negotiate the theme?

It should be a theme that anyone of any age and size can join in with.

Sashes with nicknames on are a good alternative.

wellwisher · 18/08/2012 21:49

I think you're going to have a terrible tummy bug that makes it impossible for you to go on the hen weekend, OP. You're looking a bit peaky alraedy, actually

Wear what you like but take a whistle and cardboard megaphone & tell them you're the coach.

justbogoffnow · 18/08/2012 21:51

I know £150 is a lot of money but if I was feeling as you do, I would write the money off. It all sounds grim - why has something so crap cost you £150?

aquashiv · 18/08/2012 21:51

You have two choices you either think feck it no body knows me I shall dress like an imbocile in the interests of being a good sport or I pretend I have the plague/strange rash or whatever and stay home and watch Casualty the choice really is yours OPSmile

ScramblyEgg · 18/08/2012 21:53

YANBU, hen weekends are from hell.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 18/08/2012 21:53

Ok, so you can lose 150 and stay at home and di something you can enjoy

or you can lose 150 (plus a lot more I imagine) and be miserable and humiliated.

I know which option I would take...

Birdsgottafly · 18/08/2012 21:54

I recommend Sabuca shots.

But on a serious note, the costume doesn't have to be short.

Birdsgottafly · 18/08/2012 21:54

Sambuca

missymoomoomee · 18/08/2012 21:55

You only know 2 people, its in a place you will never go to again by the sounds of it, why not just go for it. Sometimes the nights you think are going to be the worst turn out to be the best. If you dont want a short skirt wear then just wear whatever (maybe go for red and white though) and get some pom poms (I think you can get them in asda or tesco for a couple of quid). Don't stress too much I'm sure you will have an ace night.

Jakadaal · 18/08/2012 21:55

As an avid fancy dress hater could you just find an element of the theme (thinking pom poms or something that can be ditched after the initial 5 minutes)?

honeytea · 18/08/2012 21:56

Just buy a couple of cheap pom poms and take an american flag along. The average women is a size 16 me included I'm sure a few of the other ladies will not be the size of a cheerleader and will be joining you in not wanting to wear swimwear sized clothing on a night out.

What a seriously shit dressup theam! It's not funny/creative or interesting.

Here is a glass of wine to help you along Wine

puffinnuffin · 18/08/2012 21:57

Dress in what you feel comfortable but wave a couple of cheerleading Pom Poms around!

NellyBluth · 18/08/2012 21:57

I like the go as a coach suggestion. Would you feel comfortable if you went in a Sue Sylvester outfit? I've been on a few hen do's where I didn't know many people (and I'm not a big 'group' person) and I ended having a great time. Do you know how well the other people know each other? If its lots of people from different parts of the bride's life then a group like that often mixes quite well.

If you really don't want to go then throw a sickie the day before (been there, done that too Wink) but if you felt more comfortable about the fancy dress would you still go?
