Hmm

Apparently its about disabled people playing tricks on people.

I dunno how they are getting away with that title, its disgusting.

WTF?!

That just encourages morons to use that horrible word.

KenLeeeeeee · 18/08/2012 20:00

The same Channel 4 who are about to air the Paralympics? Disgraceful.

DozyDuck · 18/08/2012 20:00

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 18/08/2012 20:02

YANBU

Kladdkaka · 18/08/2012 20:06

The programme is written, made, and stars disabled people. It has won awards at the International Disability Film Festival and is backed by the National Disability Arts Forum.

It's an uncomfortable title, but I think that is the point.

complexnumber · 18/08/2012 20:06

Didn't Ian Dury release a song by this (or something very similar) back in the 80's?

I don't remember it encouraging morons.

loopylou6 · 18/08/2012 20:07

No I'm sorry but i don't think there's ever a need for that disgraceful word.

OP posts:
TroublesomeEx · 18/08/2012 20:09

Bit about it here.

TroublesomeEx · 18/08/2012 20:09

It's an uncomfortable title, but I think that is the point.

Exactly.

Softlysoftly · 18/08/2012 20:11

So "niggercity" would be ok if a programme is written, directed and performed by black people?

No because some words are offensive and remain so, I hate, spaz is one of them and is far more frequently used as a negative against others.

loopylou6 · 18/08/2012 20:11

Well if is the shock factor they're after then they have it.

Very bad taste imo.

OP posts:
CrikeyOHare · 18/08/2012 20:12

I suspect it is about reclaiming the word. And what's wrong with that? Words are just noises that come out of our mouths - it's the intentions behind the word that actually matters.

And if disabled people are taking the word over & neutralising it, good for them.

loopylou6 · 18/08/2012 20:12

Wish there was a like button for softly post.

NovackNGood · 18/08/2012 20:14

I take it you have not listened to spasticus autisticus or understand what it is about and are just the professionally outraged.

LaurieFairyCake · 18/08/2012 20:14

Yes, "niggercity" would be ok if written and performed by people of colour - some of the community call each other 'nigger' in lots if films and real life.

People reclaiming words used against them is fine IMO.

Mrbojangles1 · 18/08/2012 20:15

It says it had 5 piolts no were dose it say its soon to be a regluar show on our screens most likey it was pan due to the bad taste

Softlysoftly if a show of that name ever got past a polit then and only then would i be up in arms once i seen it

A

Kladdkaka · 18/08/2012 20:15

I've just watched the original one. It challenges people's perceptions of disability in a humorous way. I love the one with the guy in a wheelchair hanging from a parachute in a tree in the park, filming people's reactions to it. Brilliant.

limitedperiodonly · 18/08/2012 20:17

I'll have to watch it. Maybe it's worth watching.

As it happens the anger of Dury's Spartacus Autisticus made me think.

Kladdkaka · 18/08/2012 20:18

He says he got blown off course on the way down to a lady who asks if he's ok :o

hazeyjane · 18/08/2012 20:18

complexnumber - but everyone used the term 'spaz' in the 80s, I don't think anyone even thought it was offensive.

The programme might be great, not having seen it I don't know, but I think the title is going to backfire, because I think there are a fair few people out there who won't be thinking, 'oh, haha how clever, an ironic twist on words' .

Mrbojangles1 · 18/08/2012 20:18

I do believe jz new song is called n¥¥¥¥s in paris

To be honest as a black person i find the term offence i do not use this term myself and i find

The only black people who do use this term is american rappers and very young black children who are ill educated i would be very surprised if you heard a middle class black women useing this

coconutparadise · 18/08/2012 20:20

Well I am disabled and I think it is vile.

I get the bit where the disabled people who have written it are saying they may as well call themselves it because others do, but, I have been call a spaz by nasty, evil, disgusting teens and it fucking hurts. In fact it goes beyond hurt, and these people are so thick that they will see that this programme is called this and think it is OK for them to use it too!
