It's his idea as I'm done in. 26 weeks pg and shattered. He can get a good deal with his job, and my protestations of "I'd rather spend a grand on a new carpet" was met with "you're a long time dead, cfc".

Why am I hesitating?

Has anyone been? I'm not a sun worshipper, celtic skin, more of a do-er.

I'm so gonna go! If they let me fly that is...

Well to be honest it might be too hot.

duende · 17/08/2012 15:21

We came back from Sharm on 28th of July. We loved it. But it was over 40 degrees every day and over 30 most nights. Very tiring. We did some trips we really enjoyed but not sure if I would do lots of sightseeing on my own to be honest. We also suffered really badly with our stomachs after coming back, i was very ill for a week and weak and with stomach cramps for another week.

I would probably still go but make sure you eat nothing ouside of the hotel, use antibac gel frequently and take it very easy.

Would you go on your own and stay on your own?

HolyOlympicNamechangeBatman · 17/08/2012 15:26

I'd probably go somewhere a bit nearer to home, a lot cooler, and somewhere you're less likely to get a tummy bug, but then I'm a worrier...

Callisto · 17/08/2012 15:34

There are many places I would rather go than Sharm tbh. With a budget of £1000 the world is more or less your oyster. How about somewhere in Italy (fab food, lovely people, amazing history and sights) or Greece (lots of bang for your buck and again, fab food, amazing history and sights). Are you up to a long haul flight?

coconutparadise · 17/08/2012 15:36

I would go somewhere nearer to home too.

HellonHeels · 17/08/2012 15:37

I had a week in Sharm earlier this year and did enjoy it but I like doing a bit of lying in the sun, snorkelling and beach stuff. I had Dh with me, not sure how much I would have enjoyed it on my own, though normally I love a week's hols alone.

It will be bloody hot! If you're not a sun and sea person you might struggle for something to do. Egypt can be a bit 'hassle-y' unless you're quite assertive. I was paranoid about illness/stomach upsets, though didn't get sick.

Vaccinations are recommended (Hep A, typhoid and diphtheria IIRC) can you have these while pregnant if you need them?

Like a few others have suggested, I'd be inclined to go somewhere cooler and slightly closer to home.

Nancy66 · 17/08/2012 15:38

Will be far too hot - even for someone not 6 months pregnant.

Far nicer places to go too

YouOldSlag · 17/08/2012 15:39

I'd go somewhere nearer with better medical care, preferably within the EU so you can use your E111. Also, book it fast as you are nearly at the limit for flying and don't forget a letter from your Dr to say you're fit to fly.

I think it's a terrible idea if you're pregnant and alone to go to Egypt! Nice thought from your DH though, very kind.

whatsoever · 17/08/2012 15:39

YANBU but I don't think you'd have that good a time, from what you've said...

HellonHeels · 17/08/2012 15:39

Crikey I didn't see your budget! For £1000 I think you could have a super hol in a slightly more relaxed environment than Sharm.

MikeLitorisRings · 17/08/2012 15:42

I enjoyed sharm but it is not somewhere I would go alone.

Even dp felt uncomfortable going around the shops.

Sastra · 17/08/2012 15:42

My experience of the Egyptian medical system round there was nothing short of traumatic. I'd never go there pregnant. Oh, and you'll boil!

Sastra · 17/08/2012 15:43

Oh and I'd never go alone. I was touched up by random men in the street when my DH was there! It was truly awful Sad

Sastra · 17/08/2012 15:45

What about a gorgeous spa somewhere in Europe?

cheekypickle · 17/08/2012 15:47

Sharm is amazing. I've had a lovely time there. Very very hot though! Like other posters have said I'd rather go to a city

NoobytheWaspSlayer · 17/08/2012 15:53

Or why not go to a lovely spa somewhere in the UK, where you can get home quickly if you need to?

cfc · 17/08/2012 16:03

I haven't given serious thought to the weather! Can I blame pg brain? Or this earth shattering fatigue I am under!!

I've never really done a hol like this before. I'm a skiier moreso. But I think husband was thinking that the hotel is pretty compound-like, i wouldn't have to leave it and could sleep, sunbathe, swim and eat in their good restaurants.

Our travel insurance is the best so I am not worried about being ill abroad. Famous last words etc but I'm very, very rarely poorly (getting married to a hypochondriac was a shock!) and the pgcy is textbook. Also, i flew for longer last time i was pregnant and it's only 5 hrs, which I was so surprised about.

Thanks so much for your thoughts, I will look elsewhere I think...somewhere with a beach within walking distance, not too hot, all inc. Not too far away by plane. Any thoughts?

You might have fantastic medical insurance but if the hospital is bad then it doesn't matter. I once went to one of the best hospitals in Cairo (one that was authorised by BUPA so you didn't need to pay if you BUPA insurance) we asked for an optician and got sent to an ENT specialist. All the people I know who had babies while working in Cairo went back to the UK.

Sidge · 17/08/2012 16:13

There are a thousand other places I'd recommend before Sharm - it's a hole.

And at this time of year it's 40+ degrees.

And you get hassled a lot, even in the hotels.

And you'll probably get a gippy tummy.

Have a look at Portugal, Italy, Austria?

Littleprincessrocks · 17/08/2012 17:02

Never been so can't comment on how you will cope, but how about a spa break at a Warner Hotel?
I have stayed at Thoresby Hall twice. Both times the food was amazing, the staff were friendly and the room was fabulous (normal spa package room - didn't pay for exectutive suite).
The spa facilities were amazing!
I didn't want to leave either time, I have never been so relaxed in my life.
If I had the money right now I would go! :)

rainonmyparade · 17/08/2012 17:22

Personally, I wouldn't even consider it.

RubyFakeNails · 17/08/2012 17:23

I would go. Share isn't my favourite place but you sound like you want to go so do.

Worst case you come home early.

edwinbear · 17/08/2012 17:26

I'm going on my own in a couple of weeks and leaving the kids with their dad for a week. But, I'm going to dive and I'm not pregnant. I don't think I'd go when I was pregnant, as others have said, far too hot and too high a risk of a dodgy tum.
