Is glee appropriate for 8 yr old girl to watch?

My DD has been bought a DVD of glee at exH house and loves it....is it appropriate? Never seen it and DD has started asking certain questions....

it's normally on at nine pm. And I wouldn't let my eight year old watch it

but then I never let mine watch Coronation Street or Eastenders.

I would have said so - there are some 'teenage' themes, but it is not blatant. WHat questions is she asking?

The way I see it, is that it is a step up from High School Musical. What sort of questions is she asking?

but I did let my eight year old hieroglyphic pyramid obsessed ds2 watch The Mummy which I think is a 15 or a PG

So really I suppose you need to watch it and decide for yourself.

Don't think that will be from GLee, to be honest. Perhaps ask her again why she is doing that - although I remember DD doing something similar at the same sort of age, so not abnormal (I hope).

My 10 yr old DS said pregnancy was mentioned.... Without upsetting MN who are step mums, I know for a fact dvdsare unsupervised at exH house and used as babysitting.....

To be fair, I asked her if she was curious and got age appropriate book out library about sex hitch she liked nd seems satisfied by.....

pregnancy does happen and at 8yo they should have a basic idea how it happens

I wouldn't. I love Glee but don't think its appropriate for an 8 year old.

That said, I also don't think the googling is entirely related.

My 8 (was 7 when started) year old watches and loves it. She can't wait for the next season to start. There are a few bits i wasn't happy with her seeing so i'd fast forward or cover her eyes but nothing too bad. We live a pretty closed life so it has opened up a lot of questions, like "why is Quinn sad she is having a baby? (teenage pg) and questions about homosexuality/suicide etc which i have answered as best i can for her age, so i think it is educating her but in a "fun" way. Hopefully she will learn from it things like being gay is ok, don't bully others as it can have a serious effect (suicide) on the victim.

And of course the best bit is I can play the glee songs on the pc and blame it on her when dp moans

Glee is on at lunch times on sky 1

it's fine

it has a little bit of kissing but no more than in a soap

there are some slightly more adult themes and a few openly gay characters, but then my dcs know some openly gay people so it's never been an issue

the slightly more adult themes are handled well and will probably go over most 8 year olds heads

My ds', 7.11 and 5.9 have watched most of series 2 with me. Ds 1 asked why Quinn tasked about her baby, because if she was still at school she wasn't a grown up and only grown ups can. I answered as best I could. All ds 2 asked was if he can have a blazer like Kurt's! Mostly the story line has gone over their heads, but they love the singing and dancing.

But why? There is loads of age appropriate tv- why on earth should they watch teenage stuff at this age? There's years ahead for them to watch things like this. It's not the sex- it's the story lines and the interaction between the characters. If you feel the need to cover your children's eyes during a film then they shouldn't be watching it in the first place!

I've only watched the first ever episode and the Britney spears episode. In the first ever episode that girl with the brown hair talks about how she was conceived because she has 2 dads. I think she says something like, her two dads (one black and one white) mix up their sperm and then use that to impregnate a friend, so they don't know which "dad" fathered her. That just put me right off. Don't know if you'd like an 8 year to watch something like that. The singing is good though.

No I don't think so. The songs/music are fine, but not the stories and content IMO. Glee is more suitable for early teens I think.

Er no. Her dads are both white and Jewish, she's adopted and meets birth mum later on.

I think for an 8 year old, it depends. There are a few gay characters (how will you feel when two female cheerleaders are making out on screen?), teenage pregnancy, fake pregnancy, ginger haired triplets who are a nightmare, school counselor with OCD.

Things are handled well for a teenage audience, but not sure for an 8 year old.

Ever one for accuracy:

Rachel Berry: I am not homophobic. In fact, I have two gay dads. See, I was born out of love. My two dads screened potential surrogates based on beauty and IQ. Then they mixed their sperm together and used a turkey baster. To this day we don't know which one is my real dad, which I think is pretty amazing.

I love Glee but agree, it is not appropriate for 8 year olds.

I'm quite shocked by some of the answers here, suggesting that it's not suitable because there's homosexuality in it. It's really not that shocking, and probably already been discussed in an age-appropriate way at school.

I don't think it's unsuitable because of gay characters. I think it's unsuitable because the characters are teenagers and have teenage problems that young children shouldn't have to think about. They talk about sex a lot. Finn ends up having sex with someone he doesn't particularly want to (after the song 'Like a virgin' is sung). The boys talk about thinking about an ugly teacher to stop them getting too 'worked up' when kissing their girlfriends. The teacher's wife tricks him into thinking she's pregnant and pretends she is for months. Some of the songs are quite sexual - 'Do you wanna touch me' sung by Gwyneth Paltrow and the one that goes 'Toucha toucha touch me. I wanna get dirty' that is sung by the school guidance counsellor that ends with her lying on her back on a desk letting out little screams.

I love Glee but it is not meant for children, in my opinion.

Its actually one of the reasons i allowed my dd to watch it. Like i said, i have very few friends so she doesn't (closely) know any gay people so it has opened her eyes a bit to the world where as I couldn't provide that for her before. I really can't see I-Carly or Victorious (her other 2 fave programmes) having a gay person in it. My dd asks questions and i answer as best i can. It has had a positive not negative effect on her.

At (just over) her age i was allowed to watch Childsplay and Candyman, which i would never let her watch. At Christmas her class put A Nightmare Before Christmas on and Dd made them turn it off for being too scary so i know what my daughter can and can't handle.

I phrased that badly, Marymary. I meant homosexuality wasn't that shocking - not Glee. And I do agree that it's not suitable for 8 year olds because of the reasons you mention. Not because there's homosexuality in it. Earlier answers said it wasn't suitable because there were two boys/girls kissing. That's the attitude that I find sad.

My son wanted to watch Glee when he was 11 and I didn't let him.

For all the reasons Marymary gave.

My son is 13 and all his friends watch The Inbetweeners (absolutely no way!) and The Big Bang Theory (which I like, but it has made for a few uncomfortable viewing moments!)
