My DD has been bought a DVD of glee at exH house and loves it....is it appropriate? Never seen it and DD has started asking certain questions....

i'm glad it's not just me who doesn't think Glee is suitable for 8 year olds.

I haven't much much of it, but after the first episode I watched DH was informed the younger DC (7 & 9) are never to watch it.

The causal bullying was just one reason.

I am a huge Glee fan, but it's not meant for children imo.

First episode teacher plants cannibas in popular kids locker to bribe him into joining Glee.

Pretty disturbing storyline involving a fake pregnancy and trying to persuade young girl to give up her baby.

Lots of sex, lots of risque un-pc humour which you might not like your DC's listening to. Sex scenes between teenagers in a yukky motel, mentions 'scissoring', whole episode about Sex which is probably not suitable, talk of sex tapes, one girl tells a chinese girl she may want to get an 'eye de-slanting'..

Like I say, I love Glee, hence my ability to recall any dodgy stuff quite quickly, but it's not for kids!

I think she says something like, her two dads (one black and one white) mix up their sperm and then use that to impregnate a friend, so they don't know which "dad" fathered her. That just put me right off.

Er no. Her dads are both white and Jewish, she's adopted and meets birth mum later on.

The sperm mixing thing is in the pilot, in the latest series you see both her dads are Jewish.

I would say some episodes are okay for kids that age, others not so much. I only let DS (8) watch episodes I consider appropriate, but you need to be very familiar with the series to be able to make that call.

I really loved Glee but no I wouldn't let my 9 yr old ds1 watch it.

One of the first episodes has the song "Push it" by salt & pepa and the glee club members dance to it. They insinuate sexual acts on stage in front of the school, so there is boy/girl sex, blow jobs, and motorboating (putting your face inbetween a woman's breasts and wiggling your head about)

So call me a prude but no, I wouldn't. Admittedly a lot of the story line will go above their heads but if they were interested in the music, I would sit with them and fast forward to the music parts but never let them watch it on their own.

There have been films I have let him watch that are 12A, like Ironman, but we watched it first and I fast forwarded the part where they take hostages and are about to shoot them. My children have also seen Jurassic Park.

Not gay people KISSING on tv!!! Whatever next HmmShock.

We should see more gay people missing on tv. This is NOT a reason to not let a child watch glee. I suggest you watch it op and decide for yourself. I find the attitude of some posters that gay people being very slightly intimate as a reason to not let children watch it offensive, outdated and ridiculous. If you would let your 8 year old watch a man and woman kiss, this rule should apply to all genders.

There are definitely some adult themes in the show which may not be suitable.

manicinsomniac · 16/08/2012 10:11

No, I don't think it's appropriate.

The bit that stays in my memory (as hilarious when I watched it but no way I'd want my daughters to) was when the teacher finds one of the girls being sick and think she is purging and the conversation goes something like:

Teacher: 'Were you purging?'
Girl: 'No! I would but I have no gag reflex.'
Teacher: 'Believe me, one day you'll be very glad of that.'

I would not have wanted my children asking me a)what a gag reflex is or b) why it would be a good thing not to have one!! Grin

TroublesomeEx · 16/08/2012 12:35

Exactly cunning.

seeker · 16/08/2012 12:38

I'm not bothered by the kissing- regardless of gender, but there are loads of themes far too adult for an 8 year old. And I can't see why tiu'd want someone that age to watch it when there are so many other things to watch. Let 'em wait.

NovackNGood · 16/08/2012 12:40

I'm rather gobsmacked that someone wrote here that it's inappropriate for an 8 year old as it has a gay character in it as their first reason for not allowing it. Hmm

Krumbum · 16/08/2012 12:42

It's fine. It's teeny but a lot of stuff kids watch are. I can't see why it would be an issue at all.

seeker · 16/08/2012 12:50

Yeah, right. So you're cool with an 8 year old watching stuff about anorexia, drug taking, bullying.....

bruffin · 16/08/2012 12:54

I wouldn't say its appropriate for an 8 year old, far too many adult/teenage theme

Mimstar · 16/08/2012 19:34

Yes there are far too many adult themes, it's definitely not aimed at kids.

talkingnonsense · 16/08/2012 21:27

Who are the ginger triplets??

Kitsilano · 16/08/2012 21:31

I think it is highly inappropriate for an 8 year old. Many of the themes are sexual - albeit in a very lighthearted way from an adult perspective.

motherinferior · 16/08/2012 21:42

I have absolutely no problem with the gay characters/parents/themes, obviously. I do, however, think it's inappropriate for younger kids because it's so damn teenage.

(Mind you, my two appear to have become addicted to The Big Bang Theory Blush through teenage babysitters, and unfortunately I like it so much I end up watching it with them rather than tutting and shooing them away.)

MrsReiver · 16/08/2012 21:57

Who are the ginger triplets??

I think they are Terri's sister's kids. Whoever they are, Terri arranges for Quinn and Puck to babysit them in order to show them what a nightmare it is to look after kids. She hopes the experience will encourage them to hand over the baby to her so she can carry on conning Will.

Unfortunately for her it backfires, they are naturals and the kids have a wonderful time.

seeker · 17/08/2012 11:39

Nobody had yet explained why you'd want an 8 year old to watch it.........
