I'm not sure if I am Re a charity shop

Over the weekend we had a massive clearout and today I have taken 5 large bin sacks to the local charity shop.
All the stuff in them was washed and ironed except for the shirts that still had labels and price tags on - They were just ironed.

Lots of nice stuff. Dropped it off and the two ladies said thank you. Just on my way out a jacket caught my eye for £3.
I had no cash on me and just said 'is there any chance I could have that jacket please?' The ladies got flustered and said kept asking each other in a Chuckle brother style ' What do you think' 'don't know, what do you think' then eventually one said ' I suppose so'

There were 9 shirts that are this season that had labels on that cost more than £20. (DH buys stuff, doesn't quite fit, loses receipt and then forgets sometimes) , nice gift box sets of toiletries etc.

I felt like I was asking for something hugely precious!!

Ahh NPPF they have to throw out things that are destroyed beyond belief. You know, the sort of stuff no decent person donates?

Worn and torn clothes are sold as rags.

iknowwho · 14/08/2012 00:10

Why do you want the jacket only to wear a few times?
I don't intend to but I know my personality tbh. I have the best of intentions that I will wear something 'forever' and sadly I don't with a few exceptions.
I have some items of clothes that go back to just after DS1 (who is 16 )being born) and they are lovely and I want them to last for the rest of my life. Someof the things that I buy are 'of the moment' - to be enjoyed while they last.

The charity shop I donate to is an independent that, it has to be said ( well it doesn't but I'll say it) has a controversial background.

As I have mentioned (........ I have mentioned this haven't I, please stop me if you have heard this before) I don't give too hoots about how much it makes, although I am pleased if they do. my mine purpose is to pass decent stuff on to people who can use it, stuff that either my kids have outgrown, stuff that I have seen the light and doesn't really suit me, stuff that DH will think fits him but is more deluded than me when it comes to size, stuff that my shopaholic sister has bought but never worn (and sadly I am not a size 6 so no good to me) Things don't have to be tat to move them on.

I will look at doing gift aid to the shop though.
quazi I wish I was well heeled and had a BMW!!! Birkenstocks and a Ford here!!!

For all those that keep telling me that IABU after virtually all my posts after the my OP _ I KNOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't stop laughing that my post was deleted

An update.

The jacket that I cadged from the shop didn't suit me after all that and I was on the verge of taking it back with another clear out.
However a women from work is hugely skint at the moment and her husband has been out of work for 2 years. She has a wedding to and has bought nothing new in nearly 3 years to wear. I bought the jacket in and it fitted and looked great on her. She was made up with it. She in turn gave me a bottle of perfume that she was given but doesn't suit her. It didn't suit me either so I have given that to someone else and they are happy with it. I told the woman that gave it to me that I was going to pass it on and she was glad some one was going to use it ( A Marc Jacbobs one)

I have since gone back to the shop with a clear out of more stuff - toys the DS have outgrown, clothes that I bought and they have never worn etc. I also gave them a donation for the £3 that the jacket was up for.

All's good

I go into a charity shop near my work almost daily, and quite often pick up clothes for dd or book etc. I went in last december and saw a pair of UGG boots that had been reduced from £40 to £20. I was desperate to have them but only had £15 spare. I felt like a complete cow but I did ask if I could have them for £15. Blush the lady was really nice and let me - so I spend at least a £1 -£10 in there as over a month now!! I felt rubbish but HAD to have them!!

MrsKeithRichards · 29/10/2012 13:04

Paying it forward!

GhostofMammaTJ · 29/10/2012 17:35

I was going to make a comment about yet another zombie thread (there seem to have been a lot of them lately but it is lovely to have an update from the OP, expecially one as nice as this. Thanks for the update. Grin

MrsCampbellBlack · 29/10/2012 17:36

Fab update.

I like updates.

Ethical Egoism V Psychological Egoism V rational Egoism V Ethical Altruism V Ethical Utiliterianism......The old argument resurfaces.

Eudaimonia translates well as 'Human Flourishing'. I think this is what you and your charity shop ladies were engaged in. The shop flourished by your donation. You felt well disposed towards returning because they helped you because you had no cash.

if you want to emulate the clearly God like moral character of some Mners on this thread, you could return to the store and pay them for the item another day.

But I will not judge you harshly if you do not. Many people never bother to donate at all....

mignonette · 29/10/2012 17:44

And you did. Why is my laptop not showing the last page of Mn threads? Gremlins everywhere...

CelstialNavigation · 29/10/2012 17:53

Updates are great. I think we should have an update section.

Wheresmypopcorn · 30/10/2012 02:31

I don't think it's too bad really.
