I'm not sure if I am Re a charity shop

Over the weekend we had a massive clearout and today I have taken 5 large bin sacks to the local charity shop.
All the stuff in them was washed and ironed except for the shirts that still had labels and price tags on - They were just ironed.

Lots of nice stuff. Dropped it off and the two ladies said thank you. Just on my way out a jacket caught my eye for £3.
I had no cash on me and just said 'is there any chance I could have that jacket please?' The ladies got flustered and said kept asking each other in a Chuckle brother style ' What do you think' 'don't know, what do you think' then eventually one said ' I suppose so'

There were 9 shirts that are this season that had labels on that cost more than £20. (DH buys stuff, doesn't quite fit, loses receipt and then forgets sometimes) , nice gift box sets of toiletries etc.

I felt like I was asking for something hugely precious!!

Yabu - but I can see where u were coming from. Maybe next time you go take £3 with you and mention the jacket. That way if it happens again I'm sure they won't mind...or if your donating the jacket back mention it.

elizaregina · 13/08/2012 19:24

yeah saw program and you wouldnt belive the rubbish people hand in - some times old used knickers with panty liner attached.

they didnt know what was in your bag....

i agree i would go back and apologise with the three pounds....

iknowwho · 13/08/2012 19:25

They could have made money on that jacket They still will when it gets re donated!

Don't donate if you don't think the charity needs money. I never said that. And why shouldn't I donate. It's better than going to the landfill sight and it's not only about the money.

The shop is in a well known disadvantaged area where I used to work with high unemployment. I said before that the shop is well used. I hope the stuff I give can be of use to someone that needs it.
When I was really broke and the boys were little charity shops helped me dress the boys. Whether or not the shop is my favourite charity or not is neither here nor there tbh. It's the fact that I am passing stuff on that could be ok for other people.

Also wouldn't post 3£ back to the shop as the ladies who gave you the jacket are unlikely to actually open post and you may just get them in trouble.

WowOoo · 13/08/2012 19:27

Whenever I drop stuff off at a charity shop and then see something i want I always secretly hope they'll say 'Oh just take it, you gave us so much stuff'.

They usually don't - but sometimes will say 'oh, just give me 50p'.

I have returned something to Oxfam. I felt I had to exchange and got a book instead because of my non catholic guilt complex!

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 13/08/2012 19:29

I would either donate online (only if you felt bad) or just leave it, no biggy as you say will go back in the next load.

No need to go back and say sorry!

It's a cheeky. Not an awful.

You are a cheeky girl. Ooo cheeky cheeky.

Krumbum · 13/08/2012 19:29

You are going to give the jacket back again? It may not be in the right condition by then. I just don't understand why you'd think you could take it. If I give money to a charity I don't expect them to give me some money back.

LAlady · 13/08/2012 19:29

You could get a £3 postal order and send it to them?

iknowwho · 13/08/2012 19:31

I heard about that programme. Disgusting.

I have just rememmbered something about the same shop from about 4 years ago! Having another clear out and I was empting DS who was about 8 at the time.
I told him to leave what he didn't want on the floor near his wardrobe.
Went in and checked the toys were working, pages not ripped out of books etc.

A day or so later DS says have you seen the book on magic that nan got me.
I had. I had picked it up and put it in the pile by mistake.
I had to drive 11 miles each way to buy it back.
To this day I haven't told him that!! I'll tell him later. I felt so sick when I realised my mistake!

They haggle in my local hospice shop Shock I know a lot of their staff and have heard it being done. Lots of stealing too. Latest a team of 3, 2 ladies in burkas and a man keeping poor volunteer talking whilst they stole a load of new shirts Sad I think this is worse than someone taking a lot of stock in an asking for a £3 jacket. Oh and another one they stole a children's slide and tent awning whilst staff were in the back!

But you should gift aid norty OP Wink

iknowwho · 13/08/2012 19:33

You could get a £3 postal order and send it to them? No I'm not.
Read my reples please. They wil get the jacket back in a few months so they can sel it then. They will also have my cash donation as usual.

Kinda OT but what does 'cheeky' mean in the UK? I get the impression a lot on the forum that it's very different to what it means here! Confused

ginmakesitallok · 13/08/2012 19:36

FFS - it's only £3 folks!! Although I think OP WBU, now it's done I wouldn't beat myself up over it. Iknowwho - well done you for donating instead of e-baying!

CuriousMama · 13/08/2012 19:36

Oh fgs it's only 3 pound! And I bet OP's donated a shitload more good stuff than most of us. Ok maybe not me Wink They get tents and allsorts off us but that's mainly as it's for the hospice plus the staff are so great not whingy hen arsed mouthed crones like you get in some shops.

iknowwho · 13/08/2012 19:36

You are going to give the jacket back again? It may not be in the right condition by then.

I'll probably wear it a couple of times and then redonate.

I never thought I would have commited the crime of the century. However it looks like I have!!!!

CuriousMama · 13/08/2012 19:37

I'm amazed at the outrage on this thread. You must all be very virtuous and good people. I am in awe!

Krumbum · 13/08/2012 19:52

What it's not saying anyone is virtuous because they wouldn't do this in particular!
