I'm not sure if I am Re a charity shop

Over the weekend we had a massive clearout and today I have taken 5 large bin sacks to the local charity shop.
All the stuff in them was washed and ironed except for the shirts that still had labels and price tags on - They were just ironed.

Lots of nice stuff. Dropped it off and the two ladies said thank you. Just on my way out a jacket caught my eye for £3.
I had no cash on me and just said 'is there any chance I could have that jacket please?' The ladies got flustered and said kept asking each other in a Chuckle brother style ' What do you think' 'don't know, what do you think' then eventually one said ' I suppose so'

There were 9 shirts that are this season that had labels on that cost more than £20. (DH buys stuff, doesn't quite fit, loses receipt and then forgets sometimes) , nice gift box sets of toiletries etc.

I felt like I was asking for something hugely precious!!

I work in a charity shop & we are not allowed to just take things.

Charity shops are businesses like any other shop & need the money more than many other shops. Id go back & pay for the item.

TandB · 13/08/2012 18:36

I think you should try to get the £3 to them. The idea of charity shops is to raise money for charity. You take stuff in to help them do that. If you take things for free then you are taking from the charity.

If you aren't fussed about supporting the charity then maybe find a charity you are interested in. Or accept that you are using them as a convenient way of getting rid of clothes, in which case what you did was really, really cheeky!

FannyFifer · 13/08/2012 18:36

Jeez, neck like a Jockey's bollocks are what.

iknowwho · 13/08/2012 18:39

Jeez, neck like a Jockey's bollocks are what.
Are what ..What? Confused

accept that you are using them as a convenient way of getting rid of clothes, in which case what you did was really, really cheeky I do accept that and I know I was cheeky!

Wow, that really is cheeky, I can't believe you asked. Let's hope they manage to sell some of your stuff otherwise they end up out of pocket!!

LurkingAndLearningLovesCats · 13/08/2012 18:41

So, you ripped off a charity shop, have 'accepted YWBU,' don't want to spend the money in petrol because 'it's only three pounds' and you have a clear conscious?

What a wonderful person you are.

Sparklingbrook · 13/08/2012 18:42

I think iknow has got the message. Sad

But I need to know more about Mr iknow and his inability to buy 9 shirts that were the wrong size.

Sparklingbrook · 13/08/2012 18:42

Or ability rather. Grin

nittyclitty · 13/08/2012 18:43

Please send them a £3 through the post, you won't though will you.

iknowwho · 13/08/2012 18:44

I can't believe you asked. Let's hope they manage to sell some of your stuff otherwise they end up out of pocket!! I don't think they will go out of buisness over 3 quid! It's a well used shop!

Actually I can't believe I asked either. I'm normally too nervous to ask for discounts and haggle and all the things Martin Lewis tells you to do so to ask this was a suprise I have to say!!

Plus tell your DH to keep the receipts and take stuff back because buying 9 shirts that don't fit is just weird.
Yep, Weird, expensive and bloody annoying!!!

OP posts:
TandB · 13/08/2012 18:44

If you don't care then why bother asking? Confused

Sparklingbrook · 13/08/2012 18:45

Does he not know his size? Sad

NPPF · 13/08/2012 18:45

I think you are all being a bit harsh. OP would have donated way more than £3. I wouldn't have done it myself but I don,t see any moral duty to pay the £3 back. She has given more than she has received.

iknowwho · 13/08/2012 18:45

Please send them a £3 through the post, you won't though will you
You are right...... I won't. I will put money in the box next time I'm there though.
I normally put my loose change in the tin at the desk.

Give three pounds to charity online?

This will be noted at the pearly gates you know. It is very cheeky.

iknowwho · 13/08/2012 18:47

Does he not know his size? Sizes vary in mens sizes just like they do from shop to shop in women's clothes shops.

If you don't care then why bother asking Because I didn't know if it was the done thing or not. I now not to do it again.

OhTinky · 13/08/2012 18:48

If the clothes you were donating were so ruddy marvellous and "this season", why not eBay them?

Sparklingbrook · 13/08/2012 18:48

But there are Fitting Rooms-you need to have a word. Wink

Vagaceratops · 13/08/2012 18:49

Haggling on a market stall - okay
Haggling in a charity shop - not okay.

OwlLady · 13/08/2012 18:51

I don't think it's the end of the world :) you gave something to charity and was cheeky and got a jacket out of it.

Did you gift aid your items? You can check how much they have made and I am sure it will be loads more than £3

as for the ebay comment !!!!!!! SHE GAVE HER STUFF TO CHARITY YOU IDIOT

Vagaceratops · 13/08/2012 18:51

But its a charity shop which probably needs every penny.

YABU and you know it, but you dont care.

peanutMD · 13/08/2012 18:52

I was going to suggest your idea of putting £3 in the tin next time you're in so I'd go with that :o

usualsuspect · 13/08/2012 18:55

No need to shout owl lady.

LurkingAndLearningLovesCats · 13/08/2012 18:55

I don't think it's 'cheeky' I think it's a really horrible thing to do. But OP has said she'll give the money next time and won't do it again, so lesson learned.

What's with the attitude of some posters on here that 'it's just a charity shop.' Surely if anything, they deserve more respect? Confused
