To still miss Freddie Mercury

I wish he could have performed at the closing ceremony in person, even the clip of him on the screens gave my goosebumps.

He really was, quite simply the best and I don't think any other singer or performer can ever come close particularly when it came to performing for a big event.

Plus, he could have done this: [http://r3---bru02t13.c.youtube.com/videoplayback?app=youtube_gdata&devkey=AX8iKz393pCCMUL6wqrPOZoO88HsQjpE1a8d1GxQnGDm&el=videos&upn=reBha8dVIiU&uaopt=no-save&source=youtube&itag=18&id=ebd33801c8b2b8b4&ip=0.0.0.0&ipbits=0&expire=1344836854&sparams=id,itag,source,uaopt,upn,ip,ipbits,expire&signature=77D871CF2527646635EEA8D15752D7136AF949DC.C56E028825E3153C1DD691143331DCDE7C406DAC&key=yta1&ms=tsu&mv=m&mt=1344808022&cms_redirect=yes&redirect_counter=2]

dead fred was spectacular and you aren't wrong to miss him. saw queen a few times though, and they were strangely disappointing, even with fred at the front.

iscream · 13/08/2012 02:23

That link doesn't open for me. I can see it is a youtube video, just tell us the name and I'll search for it.
I loved Freddie, it still makes me feel sad that he is gone, and I often wonder what he'd be singing like now had he not been died.

SkipTheLightFanjango · 13/08/2012 02:27

I loved Freddie..the ultimate frontman! No-one has ever held an audience in his hand like he did.

GothAnneGeddes · 13/08/2012 02:38

Sorry about the link.

It's We Will Rock You live in Rio.

Lovebunny - Am Envy you saw them live, out of curiosity, why did you find them disappointing? Was it a stadium thing (sometimes stadium gigs can feel a bit distant and not very involving), or more their performance?

monsterchild · 13/08/2012 02:41

YADNBU! No one can sing like he could!

lovebunny · 13/08/2012 02:48

no, it was pre-stadium. when they were touring normal gigs. they used recorded effects and gave a lacklustre performance on the whole. i think i saw them three times. fred was always worth seeing, even so.

lovebunny · 13/08/2012 02:51

excellent thread for prompting memories though.

ddubsgirl · 13/08/2012 03:53

still greatly missed, caught end of a show from few yrs back and roger sang a song he wrote about hiv/aids very moving

catgirl2012 · 13/08/2012 06:50

YANBU :(

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 13/08/2012 06:57

Me too, he is to this day the only celebrity whose death I have cried over. I saw Queen at Wembley in 86, just brilliant

AnitaBlake · 13/08/2012 06:58

YANBU

Alliwantisaroomsomewhere · 13/08/2012 07:19

YANBU. I would LOVE to have seen him perform with the rest of the band. I once dreamed that Brian May and Roger Taylor were performing at a wedding. I was gutted when I woke up Grin.

FrankelSaysRelax · 13/08/2012 08:19

Queen are the band I wish I could have seen live Sad

Freddie blew everyone else out of the water last night. Just goes to show his presence and charisma still appeals to people, more thn 20 years after he left us Sad

Northernlurker · 13/08/2012 08:28

YANBU. He would have LOVED the whole Olympic thing. I thought the way they used that footage was great.

MrsKeithRichards · 13/08/2012 08:30

It was completely amazing. I thought they might have done the hologram thing we seem with tuPac. That would have been incredible. But Jessie J should hang her head in shame.

HmmThinkingAboutIt · 13/08/2012 08:37

I've seen just about every I would care to see live - apart from Freddy.

I think its a shame to roll him out like that for events like that though. Same with John Lennon. As much as I love them both it shows that the age of live music in a stadium really is coming to an end.

There are very few acts out there that are coming through and are good enough to capture that magic. A lot of people make snippy comments about has beens, but in truth you can watch someone like The Who, and then a modern band of a half decent size and the new band does not have the same presence or ability to play as a band in the same way. And do not get me started on talent show acts who have spent next to no time on the road.

Modern bands should watch videos of Freddy, The Who etc and learn all that stuff.

I feel like I lived through the last Golden Age with Britpop. I hope I'm wrong but the technology means that things are different and I'm not sure that in 20 - 30 years time we will have our wonderful live music tradition anymore.

HmmThinkingAboutIt · 13/08/2012 08:37

every act*

Psammead · 13/08/2012 08:43

As soon as the scientists invent genetic resurrection á la Jurassic Park, I'm baking me a Freddie.

Elsqueak · 13/08/2012 09:04

Absolute legend. I always get a lump in my throat when they show footage at events. Saw Queen with Paul Rogers...music was wonderful but just lacked energy without Freddie. He was an amazing performer.

LilyCocoplatt · 13/08/2012 09:11

YANBU I thought they should have used the footage of Freddie all through the song, Jessie J couldn't hold a candle to him in terms of stage presence. I wish he was still around.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 13/08/2012 09:35

Me too... I was thinking about him just the other day. The ultimate showman, never bettered. I wish he was still here. :(

Flobbadobs · 13/08/2012 09:47

Queen isn't Queen without Freddie... It's a shame they couldn't persuade John Deacon to perform too.

CMOTDibbler · 13/08/2012 09:57

I think Freddie would have loved it - that sort of occasion was just his thing. The one person I've always wanted to see sing with them is Robbie Williams as he's such a showman too.

threesocksmorganwinsgold · 13/08/2012 09:59

yanbu dh and I said the same. he would have made it beyond brilliant
