To still miss Freddie Mercury

I wish he could have performed at the closing ceremony in person, even the clip of him on the screens gave my goosebumps.

He really was, quite simply the best and I don't think any other singer or performer can ever come close particularly when it came to performing for a big event.

Plus, he could have done this: [http://r3---bru02t13.c.youtube.com/videoplayback?app=youtube_gdata&devkey=AX8iKz393pCCMUL6wqrPOZoO88HsQjpE1a8d1GxQnGDm&el=videos&upn=reBha8dVIiU&uaopt=no-save&source=youtube&itag=18&id=ebd33801c8b2b8b4&ip=0.0.0.0&ipbits=0&expire=1344836854&sparams=id,itag,source,uaopt,upn,ip,ipbits,expire&signature=77D871CF2527646635EEA8D15752D7136AF949DC.C56E028825E3153C1DD691143331DCDE7C406DAC&key=yta1&ms=tsu&mv=m&mt=1344808022&cms_redirect=yes&redirect_counter=2]

Really DO NOT watch the , if you don't want to have a lump in your throat.

HecateHarshPants · 13/08/2012 10:41

Oh, he would have been in his element! He would have had the crowd in the palm of his hand. He had such presence.

He was an amazing showman. I don't think there's anyone out there who can hold a candle to him.

Olbasoil · 13/08/2012 10:41

Queen were brilliant live, I was very lucky to see them 4 times and I went to the tribute at wembly . I saw Queen & Paul Rogers at Birmingham and although Freddie and John Deacon were missed , it was a good night. Freddie Mercury would have loved the Jubilee & the Olympics and would of been in his element
Grief! I sound like a schoolgirl with a crush !!

NorksAreMessy · 13/08/2012 11:10

Absolutely.
I laughed my socks off at Eric Idle and the roller skating nuns, and was shocked to find myself crying actual tears at Freddie.

I miss him too Torch

WorraLiberty · 13/08/2012 11:13

I quite liked Queen but I do honestly think I must be the only person in the world who didn't particularly care for Freddie Mercury.

ViviPru · 13/08/2012 11:17

I find it comforting though that they roll out all these decrepit artists clearly past their best, then in the midst of it all there's Freddie, frozen in time, star shining bright as it ever was. He will always be that magnificent. Never reduced to a faded parody of himself like so many of the others.

LadyBeagleEyes · 13/08/2012 11:24

He really was the ultimate showman but that clip, frozen in time was when he was at his pinnacle.
He wouldn't have looked that way in 2012.
What age would he be now if he'd lived?

Psammead · 13/08/2012 11:34

He'd be approaching 66, I think. He was born on September 5th (like all the very best people Wink) 1946.

MrsKeithRichards · 13/08/2012 11:41

Vivi that is so so true. He is still immense, frozen in time. Would de cringing and rolling our eyes and bemoaning him being rolled out (think McCartney, Elton) if he was still with us?

Thumbwitch · 13/08/2012 11:45

YANBU

My biggest musical regret is not getting to see him perform live. :(

frostyfingers · 13/08/2012 12:46

Love that Team GB video - they all look like they're having so much fun.

FrankelSaysRelax · 13/08/2012 13:01

ViviPru, that's a beautiful way to put it. [sniff]

ViviPru · 13/08/2012 13:04

Thanks

Chubfuddler · 13/08/2012 13:05

As a pointless aside how long is Laura trotts hair!??

FrankelSaysRelax · 13/08/2012 13:07

I might nick your post and put it as my Facebook status Wink

stressheaderic · 13/08/2012 13:08

I absolutely adore Freddie, and Queen.
An absolutely iconic band, never imitated.
I'm sorry he was taken way before his time but pleased that he is remembered as a showman, at the very top of his game.

debka · 13/08/2012 13:11

My da worked with someone who lived with Freddy Mercury before he was famous. Apparently he used to sing really really badly all day long in the flat- he was so determined to be a star he even overcame lack of singing ability.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 13/08/2012 13:13

God, I love Freddie, such a performer. I don't think anyone could match him tbh.

Gave me shivers watching the clips last night, it was very clever and very emotional to watch. He will never be forgotten......

As for that Addidas clip

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 13/08/2012 13:19

My first stop with Dr Who in the Tardis?? Queen at Wembley Stadium!

Freddie was Amazing! I watched one of biographies the other day recorded back at Christmas I cried! A fabulous person! I can never listen to Who Wants To Live Forever, or Those Were The Days Of Our Lives, without having a good weep!
I was a little sad that a/ they didn't play the whole of Bohemian Rhapsody, and b/ the screen Freddie didn't sing the whole song! Jessie J was good NEVER thought Id say THAT! But it was really teasing to show just a little!

gallifrey · 13/08/2012 15:56

I've been watching loads of Queen videos on youtube, even my 9 yr old dd asked to see even more and has now asked me if we have any Queen cd's bless her!

MissBetseyTrotwood · 13/08/2012 18:15

I cried when he died, a lot. He'd have outclassed the lot of them last night and even did so in just the clip. I was hoping for a Freddie hologram, like they did with Tupac!

Oddly, and against my better judgment I'm sure, I sort of felt that the Jessie J double up last night wasn't too bad. I was happy to see an openly bisexual person singing his song too. (I think she's openly bi?)

WetAugust · 13/08/2012 19:06

I went to the Mercury Tribute concert just after he died.

The rest of Queen performed with people like Robert Plant, Axel Rose etc fronting for Freddie.

The only person who came remotely close to Freddie was George Michael performing Somebody to Love. Still sends shivers down my spine

Olympicnmix · 13/08/2012 19:16

My df knows, in a very tenuous way, Brian May and was there when Queen were making the Breakthrough(?) video on top of the train (df remembers the terrible catering too!). It was clear FM was very ill and had to keep taking breaks but he was also a perfectionist even then.

I used to serve behind the bars at Wembley Stadium from age 14 and if I did the early shift often got to see the main act, but the final time Queen performed my team were working a full bar so I was too young to serve. It's to my regret I didn't blag my way to do behind the scenes as I'd done before; I'd always assumed there would be another Queen concert with FM at the helm at Wembley one day Sad

Olympicnmix · 13/08/2012 19:21

HmmThinkingAboutit, that's a fab video, Lewis Smith imo makes it.
