to feel I am the only one not going away this summer?

We (me and DH and DS) are not going anywhere this summer because it will result in more debt for us. We had a week off together when the schools closed and we stayed home - it was wonderful! Perfect weather, lovely day outings, no squabbling!

But, I really wish we could go away even just for the long weekend at the end of Aug but my car now needs work done on it.

Please tell me IABU and that I should be happy for what I have (even though a friend of mine is going to 3 different destinations this summer with her rich husband).

We're not going away either... all my family think we're bonkers and some how we'll die if we don't go away (of course they're all loaded and at least four holidays a year is the norm for them), but we won't. We've had some nice day trips out. Had some time off work together and spent quality family time together. We'll live.

And so will you.

And the weather's going to be lovely this weekend :o

JumpingThroughHoops · 10/08/2012 16:35

I'm not either.

holidays are a fairly new innovation anyway, very nouveau - so no point copying the masses Wink

Itsjustafleshwound · 10/08/2012 16:35

It is just a change of attitude - a holiday doesn't mean that it has to be in a non-uk destination just a effort to do somerhing out of the ordinary and treat your home/town like youwould if you are a visitor and do those 'obvious ' things ....

We aren't going away either but it is amazing what you can do on a small budget and how much stuff there is to do for little cash.

longjane · 10/08/2012 16:37

No going away either or doing days out
as no money
but loving the weather just the same

Alliwantisaroomsomewhere · 10/08/2012 16:39

Thank you! I will plan a fabulous day for the 3 of us on Sunday then. DH is working on Saturday so that just leaves Sunday.

Hmmmmm.... definitely the beach and maybe a treat for tea on the way home.

firawla · 10/08/2012 16:39

we're not going anywhere either, im sure loads of people arent

Alliwantisaroomsomewhere · 10/08/2012 16:40

Longjane, are you near any of those free paddling pool places that are dotted around England? Really lovely to take the kids there (not that I have - and now my car is in need of repairs so I will have to wait til that's fixed).

Think of the massive carbon foot print of all those people slavishly jetting off to far off places. We might as well book our places next to the old bearded chap (or other deity of your choosing) right now :o

fuzzpig · 10/08/2012 17:19

We aren't either. I then got really sick halfway through my week off - managed one day trip out of the three we had planned (the third of which included seeing Olympic cycling as we couldn't afford actual tickets). I'm still ill and likely to be off for two more weeks.

Sorry for whingeing - this was DD's first proper summer holidays (having just finished reception) and I feel guilty that it has been completely shit as we've barely even done anything at home (DH has a long-term injury). Still I'm glad we hadn't actually booked a holiday as we would've wasted loads of money.

Saltire · 10/08/2012 17:20

We aren't either for the 4th/5th year on the trot due to the MOD deciding hat we don't need holidays, they must think that as DH has been sent away every summer since 2008!

Alliwantisaroomsomewhere · 10/08/2012 17:35

Sounds awful, fuzzpig. And Saltire!

We're not going on holiday either - haven't been since 2007, just no money :(. But we're obviously in good company - have been doing lots of pottering around, seeing people we usually don't get to spend much time with, the dogs are loving having us all around nearly all the time too :)! And look on the bright side, no worrying about the hideous expense of a holiday - the inevitable rows because you've all been forced together 24/7 for a fortnight, and it's just relaxing being at home!
Enjoy!!! :)

waterwatereverywhere · 10/08/2012 19:51

I'm not either - haven't been away for more than a night since 2008. TBH I'm not all that bothered - my DC's are really too young to care and have just as much fun having days out to petting farms, picnics and playing in the garden. Of course thats all easy to say when the weather is nice. The weeks and weeks and weeks that it rained I was not half so upbeat!

icecold · 10/08/2012 19:53

Going camping in Devon for a week....they have been sending lots of emails about half price, last minute caravan deals, if you have some cash and are interested?

eurochick · 10/08/2012 19:58

I'm not going away this summer but it's because of work rather than cash. Hopefully we will get away when work calms down later in the year. I'm very jealous of friends who are off now and spending lots of time watching the Olympics or are out enjoying the sunshine.

anewyear · 10/08/2012 20:02

Another one here that hasnt been away for 3yrs or so...
Dh is a self employed, work-a-holic, who has no money apparently, and I cant afford to do so on my wages alone..
In fact we've probly only had 3 in the last 13 yrs..

yummytummy · 10/08/2012 20:35

we're not going away either, havent been able to find a job after mat leave so just cant afford it at the moment. its crap though as have had a really shit year and could kill for a break. may try a weekend in wales or summat but its not really the same as abroad and sunshine etc. i bet loads arent going away its just they dont talk about it and the ones who are are always talking about it, iyswim?

lljkk · 10/08/2012 20:39

I'm not going away because I can't face the stress of it all.
We went on a road trip last summer & next might be going abroad (to see my family) in about 2 yrs.

Ilovedaintynuts · 10/08/2012 20:43

I haven't been away for years. No money.

I live in a place people come to visit on holiday and 15 minutes from the beach so can't really complain.
Truth be told we could scrimp and save for a holiday but with small kids (4 and 1) I just don't see the point. Even going or a meal seems like hard work and a waste of money. My 4 year old is pretty good now, once the baby is a bit older I will give it a bash.
Holidays always strike me as something better in theory...

chipmunksex · 10/08/2012 20:50

I have never had a foreign holiday in my life (unless you count a school trip) and I am 40 (ish).

We're not even managing a cottage this year and haven't for the last 3-4.

So yabu.
