To think that no one will ever vote conservative again

At least in anyone in living memory of the current government and their immoral targeting of the most vulnerable members of society.
I voted conservative at the last election to my eternal shame, I won't make the same mistake twice.

My DS got no subsidised transport.

Then it must have been assessed he didn't need it.

Vagaceratops · 09/08/2012 21:54

My DB's annual bus pass was still £350 a year at a subsidised rate.

Now they have stopped any subsidy and stopped EMA.

usualsuspect · 09/08/2012 21:55

He did need it actually, finding £80 a month for his bus fare was hard.

But obviously you have never been in that position.

Denise34 · 09/08/2012 21:55

Why do you think this country is unique in that kids have to be paid to go to school?

Vagaceratops · 09/08/2012 21:55

And when I went to college (1999 so before EMA) I had to get a stagecoach bus pass every week - no college bus at all and no subsidy.

Sparks1 · 09/08/2012 21:55

It wasn't just about subsidised transport though was it? It was about buying books, pens, note books, lunches at college etc.

What's wrong with using a library?

Pen and paper cost pence. As does lunch if done properly.

I'm sorry but it's just entitlement. Pure and simple.

Vagaceratops · 09/08/2012 21:57

They are not being paid to go to school.

They were receiving EMA to help cover the costs of going to school.

usualsuspect · 09/08/2012 21:57

And don't say he should have got a job then, because he tried and there weren't any.

A million young people unemployed, remember that?

Sparks1 · 09/08/2012 21:57

*He did need it actually, finding £80 a month for his bus fare was hard.

So he didn't need EMA then did he...

Vagaceratops · 09/08/2012 21:58

Pen and paper cost pence

Where from. I need to stock my DS up and would love to be able to get it so cheap, so can you point me in the right direction?

headfairy · 09/08/2012 21:58

It's not sparks, it's about motivating people for whom further education wasn't even a dream. It just didn't feature. Ok, so motivating them with cash might not be the pinnacle of principles, but most people work for money so what's the difference.

And anyway, for some, even those pence made a difference. People from these kinds of backgrounds tend not to have library cards. Have you ever lived in an inner city blighted by gangs and poverty? Do you know what life is like for the people on those estates?

headfairy · 09/08/2012 22:01

denise please follow the rules :o, that means not comparing us to other countries. I don't live anywhere else. I live here. As my mum used to say "I don't care what you're friends are doing..."

Sparks1 · 09/08/2012 22:02

Yes i do. Which is why EMA was so morally corrupt.

Promising a future that simply didn't exist.

Glitterknickaz · 09/08/2012 22:04

Can I just say I sincerely hope all those who resent paying for disability and chronic health conditions one day find out quite why their attitudes are so horribly inhumane.

usualsuspect · 09/08/2012 22:04

Many students claimed EMA to do vocational courses, do you actually know what you are talking about?

headfairy · 09/08/2012 22:05

sparks who are you to say that future doesn't exist? Do you have a crystal ball? Are you saying these people won't ever achieve anything, despite receiving an education? Why is that?

carernotasaint · 09/08/2012 22:06

I second that Glitter.

flatpackhamster · 09/08/2012 22:07

yellowraincoat

flatpackhamster you find one post where I've abused anyone.

I can find one on this page. You classify everyone who votes for a political party as 'morally abhorrent'. That's abuse. I'm sure you don't see it as abuse, because, after all, they're only Tories, aren't they?

It does make me chuckle when people say "oh I shouldn't have come down to your level". It just makes you look childish and unable to have a discussion without resorting to schoolchild tactics.

I've been incredibly patient throughout this thread, despite the arrogance and pomposity and vicious abuse rolling out - entirely from the Labour/Green/SWP voters, of course - and it's getting worse and more offensive as the pages go on. Don't lecture me on being childish when I'm seeing phrases bandied around like "weapons grade cunt".

FrothyOM · 09/08/2012 22:07

Well said Glitterknickaz

Vagaceratops · 09/08/2012 22:08

Its not all about A-levels. Lots and lots of courses are vocational - learning a trade. My DB1 got EMA for a mechanics course, he works in a garage. My DB2 did a vocational course in catering and he now works in a kitchen.

Sparks1 · 09/08/2012 22:08

Many students claimed EMA to do vocational courses, do you actually know what you are talking about?

What's your point? EMA was still a ridiculous waste of money.

usualsuspect · 09/08/2012 22:09

No whats your point? How was EMA morally corrupt?

headfairy · 09/08/2012 22:11

Our point sparks is that EMA wasn't a waste. It was a small contribution towards encouraging a group of people to go to college who wouldn't in a million years have done so otherwise. How is that a waste?

Vagaceratops · 09/08/2012 22:11

Morally corrupt?!?

usualsuspect · 09/08/2012 22:11

Did you think it was only paid to students studying for A levels?
