to let an obviously poorly DS (6) still go to the Olympics?

DS has been so excited about to going to the Olympics all year (he's written stories about it, made a countdown calendar, sleeps with his Wenlock toy, boasted to anyone who'll listen - typical 6 year old over excitement) and at bedtime whispered to me that it was going to be the best day of his life!

Unfortunately not long after then twice more in the night & again this morning, he's had his head in the toilet being sick. Initially I thought it was just over excitement but 4 times in one night must be a bug (family macaroni cheese is definitely not the culprit). Of course he swears blind he's fine despite clearly not being right BUT I just don't have the heart to say he can't go Sad DH is still ok about taking him & thinks he can't miss this once in a lifetime opportunity but AIBU & should I make his stay at home?

Glad it went well OP.

For what it's worth, ds1 was sick one day after school. He seemed fine by the end of the evening but I kept him off for the required 48 hours and he was fine. The next week he was sick at exactly the same time and unfortunately the second time was in the middle of the coffee aisle at waitrose where they were very nice but I was mortified as he was the week before which seemed to be too much of a coincidence...

On further investigation I discovered that out of all his packed lunch on both occasions he had only eaten his cheese and his jelly. After school he had had football club which he loves and would have been running around really hard for a good hour. I then picked him up and had a cold drink with me for him as he's so hot after football.

What I have learnt - is that if you get all hot and have been jumping around lots to really churn up the cheese and jelly in your stomach - if you then pour a cold drink into the mix it seems to clag or curdle the mix, which is then likely to make child vomit. However, once everything has calmed down they are fine again.

When I called up school to let them know that ds1 had been sick again, I explained my theory and they were happy for ds to only have one day off which is usually unheard of, they are pretty strict on people being off for 48 hours if they have a vomiting bug. But they agreed with why I thought he was sick - they just made me wait 24 hours to be sure.

Needless to say I have never let him have a cheesy jelly combination again for packed lunches to test the theory even more!

But OP I suspect that it could have been nerves and/or something like this that made your ds ill before such a big exciting day, it would hardly be unheard of.

Yeah the thing with Bolt in bed is that he doesn't always get off the marks that quick but then when he gets in to his stride it's a thing of beauty and then just as you're shouting 'YES, YES, Go, GO, GO' he takes his foot of the gas as it were because he knows he's home..............

limitedperiodonly · 09/08/2012 23:15

I might go for Blake then. He's pretty but not quite so fast

Northernlurker · 09/08/2012 23:22

Yes he's a better bet. Apparently he works harder than Bolt Grin

bogeyface · 10/08/2012 02:22

I'm old school, I still dream about Roger Black in his heyday Wink

bogeyface · 10/08/2012 02:25

And this was back when the mens 4x400 was totty cental, its just not the same anymore :o

EmilieFloge · 10/08/2012 07:18

I'm glad he was Ok, OP. That's a relief for everyone I think.

What I dislike is the facile smugness of those who said, take him anyway - as though they knew he would be fine, when frankly, none of us knew that.

I don't think anyone's posts look stupid in the context of the actual outcome - only those after it saying 'look, we were right all along, ha ha, aren't you all idiots'.

Those don't make sense. It could e asily have gone the other way, and if it had, I wouldn't have been jumping up and down calling you lot stupid, because I'd been right. That's because I understand that none of us knew for sure.

I am really pleased that he had a great day.

Chandon · 10/08/2012 07:25

agree with Emilie.

in your situation, I still would not have taken him. But glad it worked out.

Dancergirl · 10/08/2012 07:47

Glad he enjoyed it OP. Which event did he see?

LookBehindYou · 10/08/2012 08:03

A bit small minded Emilie. For me at least it was wanting a small boy to have a fab day, pretty sure that excitement and macaroni cheese isn't a good mix. I am glad it worked out well but if he had thrown up in the Olympic area I wouldn't have considered it a huge deal.

EmilieFloge · 10/08/2012 08:05

What do you mean by small minded? I don't understand. I also wanted him to enjoy himself, if possible, btw. And am glad he did.

LookBehindYou · 10/08/2012 08:09

Does 'facile smugness' ring any bells with you?

EmilieFloge · 10/08/2012 08:13

I think I know what you mean - you thought I meant everyone who said take him anyway was being smug. I didn't - my sentence wasn't clear. I meant those who are being smug after the event, that's all.

I don't mean everyone who said take him was being smug.

LookBehindYou · 10/08/2012 08:15

Okay Smile

Diving but not GB sadly. DH reckons he got a bit bored towards the end & they were a loooong way back from the action (we were given these tickets & they had a face value of £90 each so dread to think where they parked you with the cheap tickets Shock) BUT DS was suitably wowed by the atmosphere and the park itself and his day was nicely topped off in Yo Sushi (gotta question DH's thinking - Katsu curry on a dodgy tum Hmm!).

I fancied Alan Wells in Moscow quite a lot.

Daley Thompson did nothing for me. It was the Village People moustache.

cinnamonnut · 10/08/2012 08:21

Glad he went and had a good time OP, people are OTT about it.

Hopandaskip · 10/08/2012 08:31

I think YABU because he could throw up on someone else. I've been to two events and the seats are all very close together, it would be quite likely if he did throw up. I think the chance of your son throwing up on someone else makes it a not reasonable suggestion, whether or not it actually happened.

If he had done it once or twice and woken up and looked fine I might risk it, but you said he looked pasty when he woke up. I would have got paraolympic tickets instead.

Hopandaskip · 10/08/2012 08:33

my line of reasoning was... imagine you are sitting watching XYZ and the little boy behind you threw up down your hair and back. Now imagine the next 5 hours until the end of the event and until you get home.

sorry, missed that. Glad there was a happy outcome, but my advice would have been the same.

AMigratingCoconutsPersonalBest · 10/08/2012 08:53

that was a tough call to make!! I'm inclined to think I would have let him go too and seen how it went through the day.

I'm really pleased that it worked out op...

Dancergirl · 10/08/2012 09:53

Yes I was surprised how hot the aquatics centre was - we saw the synchro swimming yesterday. I was hoping it might have been air conditioned Hmm
