to let an obviously poorly DS (6) still go to the Olympics?

DS has been so excited about to going to the Olympics all year (he's written stories about it, made a countdown calendar, sleeps with his Wenlock toy, boasted to anyone who'll listen - typical 6 year old over excitement) and at bedtime whispered to me that it was going to be the best day of his life!

Unfortunately not long after then twice more in the night & again this morning, he's had his head in the toilet being sick. Initially I thought it was just over excitement but 4 times in one night must be a bug (family macaroni cheese is definitely not the culprit). Of course he swears blind he's fine despite clearly not being right BUT I just don't have the heart to say he can't go Sad DH is still ok about taking him & thinks he can't miss this once in a lifetime opportunity but AIBU & should I make his stay at home?

Still watching the coverage and there has been no mass evacuation or cases of licking the elderly.

Fingers crossed that the black death wont cause a mexican wave around the stadium Hmm

LookBehindYou · 09/08/2012 13:35

You're hysterical Hexagon.

HexagonalQueenOfEveything · 09/08/2012 13:38

Hysterical? For pointing out that the behaviour is utterly irresponsible and selfish? Righty ho. Keep telling yourself that if it helps you justify your own behaviour to yourself

LookBehindYou · 09/08/2012 13:39

Well you say that bogey, but what if the OP's ds is a stealth licker?

HexagonalQueenOfEveything · 09/08/2012 13:41

It doesn't just take 'licking' to spread a tummy bug. How childish that you are suggesting that. It beggars belief that a grown adult doesn't know how bugs are spread

LookBehindYou · 09/08/2012 13:42

I guess irony is a little lost on you eh? Why don't you go and kick a heavily pregnant woman? Oh wait, you just did.

doublevodkaandcoke · 09/08/2012 13:42

This thread is hilarious! Glad he went OP.

fwiw, when I was about 5 we went on an organised coach trip to chessington world of adventures. I had been looking forward to it for WEEKS. What was the first thing I did as we arrived at the coach? Yep, I vomited all over the car park! Mum took me anyway and I was absolutely fine, it really was just excitement.

Hope that the OP's son enjoys 'the best day of his life' (bless him!)

I am going tomorrow, must remember to bring my surgical mask.

HexagonalQueenOfEveything · 09/08/2012 13:43

You're not being ironic. You're being childish

EightiesOlympicGolds · 09/08/2012 13:44

Yep, hysterical. The OP was in no way adamant, and we don't even know it's a stomach bug. Do some of you wear surgical masks to go out every day or what?

bogeyface · 09/08/2012 13:44

the thing is Hex, you keep banging on about the immuno suppressed etc which is fine but, you have clearly never experienced a child that can make itself literally sick with excitement. My DD used to be like this before anything she was looking forward to, holidays, parties, Xmas, birthdays, you name it. I soon realised a pattern and it is easy to tell the difference between a genuinely ill child and one that is physically reacting to something. Its no different to a stress headache or a stress induced asthma attack. Going off at people and refusing to accept that you can tell the difference does make you sound hysterical.

bogeyface · 09/08/2012 13:46

Oh FGS, no one was discussing licking the elderly as a real possibility, it was obviously a joke and the fact that you cant see that is ridiculous!

I do know how bugs are spread thank you!

doublevodkaandcoke · 09/08/2012 13:46

And tbh, if I do contract the ebola virus or black death after going tomorrow, I will think 'well this is rather unpleasant, however I did choose to go to a place with thousands of people from all over the world squeezed into a relatively small place - shit happens'!

EightiesOlympicGolds · 09/08/2012 13:46

Doublevodka - x post on surgical masks! Great minds..

Is there some kind of irony perception firewall being used on this thread? It's been missed so many times today.

bogeyface · 09/08/2012 13:48

:o @ irony perception firewall

Either that or an irony pop-up blocker :o

LookBehindYou · 09/08/2012 13:48

Would you, doublevodka? Exactly like that? I can imagine you saying it in a Bridesheadrevisitedy voice.

CaptainRex · 09/08/2012 13:48

Im totally with you Hex sighs

I do believe it, when people say they get sick from excitement, I am just saying I have yet to meet any personally

If people showed a small modicum of self restraint, then these bugs would not be spread as widely as they are. People stay off work / school for 48 hours as recommended instead of going back early, spreading it to others, who all have to stay off themselves or come back early and spread further etc

I watched my dad live in fear of going outside his front door when he was undergoing chemo, because any illness of any sort meant hospitalisation. We avoided visiting anytime we even had a sniffle, just in case. That was not a good way to spend his last few years of life. And all purely because other people are too selfish to care about spreading diseases.

HexagonalQueenOfEveything · 09/08/2012 13:49

How does the OP know though that her child has been sick through excitement? There is no telling. It could be a bug, but it might not be. I stand by my opinion that it is selfish to take an ill child to a public place. I could say that clearly you have never experienced a person that is immuno suppressed. Perhaps if you did you would view it differently. I find it funny that you and several other are labelling me as 'hysterical' simply because I have a different, far less selfish, viewpoint than you all.

If there was no risk to others if someone has a tummy bug then schools wouldn't have the '48 hour rule'. And hospitals wouldn't stop visitors to wards during Norovirus outbreaks.

Once again I totally agree CaptainRex. Like you say, if people displayed a bit of self restraint and consideration for others then outbreaks of bugs and viruses would be far less common.

RossettiConfetti · 09/08/2012 13:51

Hope he enjoyed the day. FWIW I would have still gone myself if I'd been sick three times, and would have sent my child as well, if they were looking forward to it that much. Once in a lifetime Torch and all that.

NB, I was at the Olympics last weekend, and this week am in work with a flu/vomiting virus type thing. (I can't be off sick for several reasons). I don't know if I caught it from a sick 6 year old while at the Olympics/on the tube/on the plane or not, and I don't really care. I could have got it anywhere. I had a fabulous time, and I'm sure it'll pass by the weekend.

ForFoxsGlacierMints · 09/08/2012 13:51

Hmmmm, I think you would probably feel a bit more annoyed than that, especially if you found out that someone you had come into contact with had been knowingly ill but out in public.

Honest to goodness, how does anybody ever get anything? People get bugs, life happens. I can not believe how some people are reacting to this.

BoneyBackJefferson · 09/08/2012 13:51

I seem to recall that the OP said that her DC was "obviously poorly".

It may well be that the DC is just over excited about the day, or it could be that he has food poisoning, or it could be a novo virus or it could be etc. etc. etc.

The OP has decided that that he is fit to go. so its all redundant.

but if we are throwing anecdotal evidence around, when I was 11 we went on a school trip, (it was a week long trip) everyone was looking forward to it including the parents. One of my frieneds was sick on the bus, everyone thought travel sickness, turns out that he was sick the evening and the night before, there were 3 teachers and 45 very sick children stuck in a hostel 5hrs away from home.

So much for a nice walking trip.

HexagonalQueenOfEveything · 09/08/2012 13:52

Yep I totally agree with that, belgianbun. It's (pardon the pun) sickening isn't it? Such a shame some parents have no sense of consideration for anyone else except their little darlings.

LookBehindYou · 09/08/2012 13:53

Hexagon I said you were hysterical because of the language you were using and the offensive way you talked about the OP.

HexagonalQueenOfEveything · 09/08/2012 13:54

Forfoxs, but the point I, and several others are making is that if people displayed some consideration and common sense, these bugs wouldn't get spread around to the extent that they do. If every child was kept away from school for 48-72 hours following a tummy bug it would effectively stop the bug from doing the rounds
