My dd has been invited to a party where they are planning to go to see 'Ted' - this is a 15 and I think they are too young.

I dont think there is a difference between a sex scene rude humour in a 15 film than a sex scene or language, and as dom said when is it ok for a child to see a sex scene or a rude gesture on screen 5 6 11 ? I think edustudent put it better than i can ,

Dominodonkey · 08/08/2012 13:00

Krumbum - I am sure I must be misunderstanding you but are you saying that because some six year olds touch themselves it is fine for them to watch sex on screen?

Krumbum · 08/08/2012 13:00

I think it depends on the child

Krumbum · 08/08/2012 13:01

No sorry Dom i was talking to the other poster then. I was talking about young teen kids.

Ok Krum I guessed you were talking to the previous poster. We are both pretty swift in our responses today!

Mrsjay · 08/08/2012 13:03

OK take american pie for example i am only saying that cos i watched it recently , nadia is masturbating to a porn mag while lying naked at what age is that ok for a child or young teen to see, taking into account there is people watching her on the internet while she does it,

BackforGood · 08/08/2012 13:03

My ds (16) saw it yesterday, and came home saying "It was extremely funny, but certainly not suitable for {inserts sisters' names} or Mums to watch" Grin.
Why on earth would anyone even think to suggest taking 11 and 12 yr olds to a film that has been rated 15 ? Confused. Even if you were daft enough considered it was OK to take your own child, no right thinking adult would take other people's children to something that the censors think is too old for them, would they ?
YANBU, for sure.

Mrsjay · 08/08/2012 13:05

or Mums to watch"

this made me Grin how considerate of him to want to protect your precious eyes

On a slightly different note, It is interesting to see how film classification has changed dramatically over the last 20 years. When I was about 10 my mum was very unsure about me going to see Dirty Dancing at a friends house because it was a 15. Now it is pretty much regarded as a family film and I am sure it would be a PG at most.
I think it was because of the dodgy abortion and the use of the word 'Shit' that it was a 15!

Mrsjay · 08/08/2012 13:10

was dirty dancing a 15 really I never really knew that channel 5 show it on a sunday afternoon
, I was trying to think earlier what the classification was before the PG 15 18 rating came in , i cant remember,

Mrsjay · 08/08/2012 13:11

do you know that grease has a few versions well edited according to the time of day it is shown

RubyFakeNails · 08/08/2012 13:22

Film ratings used to be U, A (think it was like a 12A but for 14 so 14A), AA (14 of over) & X (18 or over).

Then they brought in U, PG, 15 & 18. 12 rating didn't come in until maybe 1990ish. Also they mucked about with them a bit, it was U for children then U for overall etc.

Mrsjay · 08/08/2012 13:24

Oh thank you ruby it was really annoying me not that it matters was just one of the random thoughts ,

Dominodonkey · 08/08/2012 13:26

Yes Ruby 12 came in for Batman in 1990 as censors wanted it to be 15.

It does prove what you said about parents having to use their common sense.

I still think that 'Ted' sounds completely inappropriate for young teens though.

Mrsjay · 08/08/2012 13:28

THe 12 A really annoys me is it a 12 is it a pg what Confused dd1 and her dad went to see a harry potter first because it was a 12 A and dd2 was a bit younger so i was being neurotic unsure about it,

RubyFakeNails · 08/08/2012 13:31

I think 12A highlights my point that at 12 its totally up to parents. I take my 6 year old to 12As every week nearly, ridiculous rating in a way but I'm happy it gives parents the decision.

Mrsjay · 08/08/2012 13:33

You are right ruby i still dont think Ted is an appropriate film for a young teen though

Donncee · 08/08/2012 14:23

I've seen it and think it's definitely not suitable for 11 year olds.

glastocat · 08/08/2012 14:24

Did Krumbum ever say if she has actually seen it? I've asked twice.

Krumbum · 08/08/2012 14:27

Read back. No I havnt.

Mrbojangles1 · 08/08/2012 14:30

I think since they made 12a its brung out all the fecless parents who domt know boundries and whats sutabil for a child or not Sorry i dont care if i get flamed i think op is a big arse

If my child was invited to a party to see a 15 rated film given that he is 13 he wouldnt be going my parenting wouldnt be so off kilter that i would need to ask about weather he should go or not on line because even though op says hes to young she dosent sound sure she is right which means you are a arse

If you dont know what type of film is not ok for a 11 year old please book your self in to the nearst parenting course

glastocat · 08/08/2012 14:35

Krumbum, well that explains a lot really. Maybe you should actually watch it first before passing judgement?

Krumbum · 08/08/2012 14:35

Seriously mrbojangles. Don't be nasty to the op.
Film ratings are a guideline. Why do you care so much? What do you think it's going to do if a 13 year old sees a 15 film?
You need to chill out and look at it properly not just worry about breaking the weird arbitrary rules. Very sexist and puritanical rules at that.

Krumbum · 08/08/2012 14:36

Yeah mate I said I will watch it. The conversation carried on about other films, tv shows with simulation themes.
