To think 11/12 year olds are too young to see "Ted" ?

My dd has been invited to a party where they are planning to go to see 'Ted' - this is a 15 and I think they are too young.

TroublesomeEx · 08/08/2012 10:57

I think anyone going to see Ted is being incredibly unreasonable. It looks shit!

Krumbum · 08/08/2012 11:02

I used to get into 15's at age 11. I bought an 18 DVD from hmv when I was 12 so it is possible they would get in.
I only would block a teen watching a film if it were going to affect them in any way eg be degrading, sexist, violent.

fuzzpig · 08/08/2012 11:03

I would have no trouble saying no. I do agree that children have possibly heard a lot of nasty stuff in the playground but that does not mean I am going to approve that by letting them watch movies with it in.

I am not one to strictly adhere to age ratings though - I trust myself to make judgements on tv or film I have already seen and if I think something is ok for my younger child to watch then I will do that - but only if I have seen it already. I would not let them watch something new that was too old a rating as I always start by assuming the rating is correct. I would not assume the same for other people's children though And I certainly wouldn't encourage my or any other child to attempt to sneak into an older movie at the cinema (although I don't think that has happened here anyway as hopefully the parent in the OP just didn't realise the rating).

BertieBotts · 08/08/2012 11:11

My 16yo niece saw it and was shocked by it - she posted on her facebook later that she was shocked by the racism. I haven't seen it but it sounds vile TBH. Isn't it based on those "bad taste bears" you get in stoner shops?

It will be 15 because of the adult themes in it. If a joke is meant in a tongue in cheek or ironic way a 12 year old might well not realise that and could go around repeating stuff.

I should think it most likely does have degrading material in it.

Mrsjay · 08/08/2012 11:17

I think Ted is probably going to be degADING AND SEXIST KRUM it doesnt look very politically correct ,

Krumbum · 08/08/2012 11:19

Well it depends it what way it's done. It's made by the makers of family guy which is very right on.

Mrsjay · 08/08/2012 11:22

Family guy right on really do you think so ? i love familiy guy but Pc Confused

TeWiDoesTheHulaInHawaii · 08/08/2012 11:25

Have heard a review which commented on lots of anti-semitic and sexist jokes. No idea of the truth of that because I decided not to go.

I don't think this kind of humour is ever suitable for young teens because they just do not get why it is funny. If you tell a 11yo a joke about fat people, where the joke is about our preconceptions about fat people, they will think it's funny because the person is fat. It's just how they are.

Krumbum · 08/08/2012 11:26

Well that's the point. It uses humour to mock the right wing, sexist, racist etc. so yes I think it is right on. No your right it doesn't use pc language but it isn't using the language to hurt and degrade.

Mrsjay · 08/08/2012 11:26

Exactly te they are just to young to 'get it ' imo

RubyFakeNails · 08/08/2012 11:27

Bertie What racism? I only saw it the other day, with my 2 16 year olds and their 15 year old cousins, we all found it hilarious, but I'm struggling to remember racism.

The only bit I thought, as mentioned earlier that wouldn't appeal to feminist sensibilities is a sort of mock facial scene. I only thought that as its only on mn that I hear this is really controversial.

I think film ratings are bollocks and prefer to make the decision myself. I've always let mine go one rating up without my input, at 12 they could watch 15s and at 15 they could watch 18s although generally if I'm around I would watch the films first or with them. The cinema is great in my opinion because I don't need to watch anything they just don't let them in, although can be annoying when they have to wait for the DVD.

ThePigOnTheWall · 08/08/2012 11:28

There is no way I would let my 12yo go and see it

Did you speak to the parents OP?

Krumbum · 08/08/2012 11:31

I 'got' south park at that age. I hope to raise politically and socially aware kids. Anything they don't get they just ignore.

glastocat · 08/08/2012 11:31

I got free preview tickets for this, its pretty funny. But there is no way I'd let my 11 year old see it, apart from the parsnip, the bear is a pot head and also hires prostitutes one of whom shits on the floor. Not appropriate in a million years!

glastocat · 08/08/2012 11:33

Krumbum, have you actually seen it?

TeWiDoesTheHulaInHawaii · 08/08/2012 11:33

I have worked with quite a few 10/11yos whose parents clearly believe they 'got' things like south park, little britian, family guy.

They never did.

Maybe your DC really do Krumbum, but I'm not going to take your word on it.

memphis83 · 08/08/2012 11:36

ruby By racist I imagine it is the part when he calls Norah Jones a muslim and then says oh yeah thanks again for 9/11?

RubyFakeNails · 08/08/2012 11:37

I watch South Park and Family Guy quite often as do the DCs, just to be clear it is a really different...tone I guess, am struggling to describe it but it is different.

Thinking about it, there may have been one bit with an Asian character did fulfil some stereotypes but I think thats quite typical in films (inglorious basterds, the hangover etc but not described as racist). I googled and it says there is some anti-semitic jokes, can't remember any may be wrong but am I'm jewish I tend to notice these things.

RubyFakeNails · 08/08/2012 11:40

memphis See knew I must have forgotten, but don't you think its telling that in all of the US press I've just read about the racism in it to remind myself that part isn't mentioned Confused

She does then correct him but I guess if you were being really cautious you could be unhappy about that around dcs, although I think thats quite a typical joke of lots of tv/stand up etc. That is probably a joke from Family Guy which I imagine 12 year olds do watch.

seeker · 08/08/2012 11:41

I watch South Park sometimes with my 11 and 16 year olds. I think there is a lot to be learned from it, and lots of good discussions to be had on the back of it. But I wouldn't let 11 watch it on his own.

SoleSource · 08/08/2012 11:46

I want to see it. I shall go next week if it is on in the daytime. Looks funny. I love family guy, I have watched 2 episodes of that just recently, funnily enough.

Mrsjay · 08/08/2012 12:03

I stopped watching south park years ago have they even made new episodes recently ? it kinda lost its appeal to me

RubyFakeNails · 08/08/2012 12:06

I'm not sure but its quite often on the comedy channel or mtv so we see it quite a lot.

Krumbum · 08/08/2012 12:10

Yes they are still making south park. There was a new series this year. It's brilliant.
