That's it, I work as a nurse in the Nhs, I'm 33. , just thought at this stage of my life I would be earning more. (unhappy & bitter) have 2 young DD, So career change at the mo would be difficult.

YABU. I believe average is in the mid £20k range.

PurplePidjin · 05/08/2012 06:59

It's a damn sight more than most people i know...

Dprince · 05/08/2012 06:59

Imo that's above average. What is progression like in your field?

LST · 05/08/2012 07:01

YABU.

I'm on the highest salary of most of my friends and I get £16,600 pa.

Elderwand · 05/08/2012 07:02

Right ok, sorry ( runs and dons hard hat )

YABU that is more than average wage some people would love to earn that.

AnitaBlake · 05/08/2012 07:05

The average wage for a female in the UK is £24k pa, for a male its £30,100pa. Yes, YABU.

Cokeaholic · 05/08/2012 07:07

It's a good earning level and way above average. Nursing isn't known for being a career with mega financial rewards.

What is making you feel so unhappy and bitter with regards your current financial situation ? Do you have a pressing financial need to earn more ?

larks35 · 05/08/2012 07:09

Average UK salary - men £30,731, women £24,183 from pascale.com.

I just looked this up as I thought £31K sounded high to be "less than average" and it looks like I'm right. If you are female then you are earning a lot more than average. So on that basis YABU.

FWIW it is very close to my earnings and I think it is a good wage, if my DP earned a similar amount we'd be very comfortable, unfortunately he doesn't.

Out of interest if a higher salary is important to you, what made you go into nursing?

bigkidsdidit · 05/08/2012 07:12

the median, which is a better measure IMO, is 26k for full time workers

Bigwheel · 05/08/2012 07:29

Myself and my husband earn 26k between us doing 4 jobs between us, although I admit to only working approx 16 hours a week due to cost of childcare, dh works around 50-60 hours. Even worse my main job is with the nhs, his is with the council. Uabu.

RillaBlythe · 05/08/2012 07:29

Surely you knew the pay scale for nurses when you went into the job? I suppose when you are making choices age 18 or whatever the figures & the costs of family life seem so far off & distant.

You earn more than my DP (I am at home with the kids).

MammaTJisanOlympicSumoWrestler · 05/08/2012 07:32

YABU in stating that it is less than the average wage. YANBU in reminding me of one of the reasons I am doing my access with the aim of going to uni next year to do Adult Nursing. Thank you!!

Elderwand · 05/08/2012 07:34

I've always wanted to be a nurse, It can be rewarding, but nursing isn't what it used to be- the politics of today can get quite nasty between mangers etc

I've been offered another job, to start up something new. This would be the wage, at the mo I earn 8% above 31500. The new role will be more hours.

So more hours similar pay- if you know what I mean.

Oh my inner demons!

I don't get why you are bitter because you thought you would earn more.
What steps have to taken to progress, what more can you do. Earning really good money rarely just drops in your lap.
how old were you when you thought this?

more people earning between 10-20k than other wages brackets

MrsHelsBels74 · 05/08/2012 07:51

That's more than my husband & I bring in combined, but I do work part time.

Sometimes no matter how much you earn it's never enough though is it Sad

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 05/08/2012 07:51

Great list of stats ivykaty. I think it highlights the fact most people overestimate other people's wages - which in turn makes you feel poorer yourself.

Also it shows that taxing the rich loads won't help hugely, according to those figures less than 2 million people earn more than £50,000

for what it's worth I do think high earners should be taxed a greater proportion of their income, I just don't think it will generate a huge tax income for the country

WaitingForMe · 05/08/2012 07:52

Average isn't a great term as there are different ways to calculate it.

I'm also more interested in who I consider to be my peers. So I wouldn't count the women next door who work part time in order to play the benefits system nor all the local millionaires (I'm on the edge of the Cotswolds). For DH and I, the average household income (friends/colleagues) is about £70k by looking at two people working in good jobs. I run my own business which is quite new so we fall a fair bit short of £70k but it's a target of sorts. Actual average household income feels a bit unhelpful to me because we couldn't afford our mortgage on that.

Lizzabadger · 05/08/2012 07:52

Yabu. Mean income is around £26k. I am in a profession where minimum requirement is 1, often 2 doctorates plus bsc and msc and you earn more than some of us.

pushmepullyou · 05/08/2012 07:53

ivykaty are those figures taxable income or total income?

PrincessOfSnails · 05/08/2012 07:54

You earn a bit more than me and I'm happy with my salary. We've had a pay freeze at the company I work for for the last 4 years but this year I'm getting a rise of ... £350. I just feel lucky to still be in a job.

I think YABU sorry.

Elderwand · 05/08/2012 07:55

Dprince- To progress I could do my masters but I would have to pay around 6k- some in the nursing profession get this free, but it depends where u work.

I can't really afford this at the mo as I work part time, so would be looking at 5 years time.....

OP posts:
ivykaty44 · 05/08/2012 07:55

total income

Elderwand · 05/08/2012 07:57

Will post later...I've not disappeared :)
