Myself and Mr BC own a house that we used to live in that we now rent out. I'd say we are decent landlords, attending to any problems quickly as possible and availing ourselves to him 24 hours a day 7 days a week in case of emergency, despite also paying a letting agent do the leg work in such matters. Anyway there was a problem with the boiler which the tenant decided not to inform us about and get fixed himself (which is another thread altogether) and then asked to be reimbursed , for the sake of harmony we agreed to refund him the money based on the understanding this would not happen again. I went to the house today to collect the receipt and hand over the cash only to see that on the front door of MY PROPERTY he had stuck several National Front stickers with slogans such as 'Pensioners before Immigrants' and 'Proud to be British and White'. He wasn't in so I left the property after taking a photo on my phone and ringing the letting agent.

AIBU to consider giving him his notice over this, I'm raging that he thinks this is an acceptable way to behave and that he would deface our property in this way?

You know it makes sense OP. Queen and KickThe Guru are right. Get him out on a technicality.

BenedictsCumberbitch · 04/08/2012 13:25

I haven't read all thread yet, but;

  1. stickering is considered criminal damage

  2. I would use the pet thing and boiler incident to get him out (pet thing definitely a goer)

  3. get a racist twat clause in your next contract

LaurieFairyCake · 04/08/2012 13:37

Yes, I'd legally give him notice.

You own the home, it could become a target from others because of the stickers - IMO it's not like labour/Tory posters, the ones you describe are inflammatory to the majority of people - I wouldn't want to be associated with someone like that, and owning the house makes you associated - what if you wanted to move back in?

Or rent to some normal people in the future - they could be targeted after Mr Arsehole moved out.

porcamiseria · 06/08/2012 09:44

but seriously, what can you do? you cant kick him out cos he is facist twat. live and learn

Fireandashes · 06/08/2012 09:52

Like others on this thread, our private rental lease included a clause forbidding us to display any posters, signage, promtional material or stickers on the front of the house. When you next come to renew the lease (either with existing tenant or new one if you decide to evict racist twat current one) perhaps you should amend it to include something similar?

mummytime · 06/08/2012 10:00

I am surprised that your tenancy allows any kind of defacement, such as stickers on the front door (although I would probably allow the police one against door to door sales people).
He has broken the tenancy in three ways: pets, defacement and unauthorised repairs. Do you have all the correct paperwork from the repair? Otherwise it could actually make resetting the place hard, and you would need to withhold deposit to get those safety certificates in place. If you were in a conservation area any stickers on the front door could get you a fine.

strugglingwiththepreteenbit · 06/08/2012 10:50

I would agree that the stickers are horrible and I don't blame you one iota for wanting them removed, but as a previous poster said, it will give him a sense of persecution he could use to whip up the oxygen of publicity. It also sounds like you're doing a lot of work to manage the property at the same time as paying an agent. Let them deal with him and make a decision based on the results of the inspection. You could add a clause to the lease prohibiting the display of political material. Also, I suggest you emotionally detatch yourself from the house. It's not your home now, it's his.

Helxi · 06/08/2012 11:10

Even if the democracy in this country is superficial at best, you're trying to make someone homeless because you disagree with their democratically legal political views? Threads like these remind me why the self-righteous lefties are just as nasty as ardent right-wingers.

Political persecution, just with a different flavour.

PatronSaintOfDucks · 06/08/2012 11:12

Can you drop a nice left-wing book on the consequences of British colonial involvement in the developing world though his letterbox?

BenedictsCumberbitch · 06/08/2012 22:29

Helxi sorry you feel like that but I don't tolerate racism. No matter in which form it is expressed.

I went to see the tenant to collect the receipt for the boiler repair (carried out by a suitably qualified repair person) and was pleasantly surprised to see the interior of the house after not being in there for a while, he has redecorated the entire downstairs of the house and it looks very nice. I did not mention the stickers however confirmed that he would be having an inspection and I will leave it to the letting agent to ensure the stickers are removed. DH and I are awaiting the outcome of the inspection before making a decision over whether to serve notice. I have said before in many respects this man is a good tenant and I have no desire to make anyone homeless (and those who have read the whole thread will see that things moved on slightly from my initial ranty OP) but as above I don't see why I should appear to endorse racist views by continuing to be associated with this man if he can not keep his views off the front door of a property that may no longer be my home but still remains my property.

Helxi- you do exaggerate! There are other houses this man can rent, and he will be given suitable notice to find one. The OP is his landlord, and not responsible for his future welfare and well being!

Also, this man supports the National Front, so if you want to talk about a lack of compassion for others, you can start with them!

icecold · 07/08/2012 09:36

Im a nasty leftie, and Im all for persucuting the fucker
see, thats the mistake people make about liberals. Im not airy-fairy clappy-happy; I am militantly liberal

Im sure he'll find some other nasty racist cunt to put a roof over his head
