To think that West Mercia Police need to take this poster off their website

here

they have already apologised for another poster story but the poster on their site is, in my opinion, also pretty offensive.

"Alcohol features in two thirds of all rapes, we want people to enjoy the party season and let their hair down without letting their guard down"

where are their campaigns aimed at men or aimed at taking women seriously?

I've never been drugged, Mame. I was still raped, repeatedly.

I've never gotten "properly drunk". I was still raped, repeatedly.

I was never raped whilst wearing a short skirt. Each time, it was jeans or pyjamas

I was never raped walking home, after dark. I was raped at home. Someone who gave me a lift home, who I trusted, tried to rape me.

Rape myths are used to control women, to differentiate between "types of rape". They're used to try and place the blame on women who are raped. There's little to no truth to them. They're a rapist's tool, used to silence women.

mame11 · 03/08/2012 17:08

Well not accepting drinks from stranger/not leaving drink unattended is apparantly a rape myth... yet it seems really sound advice

MildewMayhew · 03/08/2012 17:11

It's a rape myth because you claim it prevents rape. It doesn't.

mame11 · 03/08/2012 17:12

It lessens the likelyhood. A rapist would be more inclined and would stand less chance of getting caught if the girl were drugged and couldn't remember the next morning

DuelingFanjo · 03/08/2012 17:14

the rape myth I was referring to was the idea that because you have only ever seen night time rapes on Crimewatch then there are never really any Daytime rapes. That is just a fucking idiotic thing to say and marks the point where I really began to realise there was no point engaging in a battle of wits with someone so clearly unarmed.

Rapists make use of the fact most rapes go unreported (85 - 90%)

They also make use of the fact that, of the 15-10% of rapes reported, only around 5% end in a conviction for rape.

This also deals with the myth that rapists get away with their crimes if their victim can't remember the event

mame11 · 03/08/2012 17:19

No DF. I mentioned the news as well. No need to get so hostile and touchy touchy. I said I couldn't remember the last time it happened in broad daylight in front of hundreds of people. Alas I have been linked to 2 stories of where it has happened in daylight... So I stand corrected

MildewMayhew · 03/08/2012 17:21

HOUSE

Wait, this was anti-feminist Bingo, right?

DuelingFanjo · 03/08/2012 17:23

If anything this thread has at least given me some great new blogs to follow.
Hopefully, despite the rapoe myths and rape apologists, people will have got something positive from this thread.

Hi all,

We'd like to take a moment to direct you / remind you all of our recent We Believe You Campaign

In particular the rape myths that we're challenging.

Please do read it through.

Thank you.

SquidgyBiscuits · 03/08/2012 17:32

I don't see what's wrong with it really. I think it is focused more on men than women?

And as people we do have to take responsibility for our own safety. I don't leave my drink unattended in the same way I don't leave my car unlocked or walk about at night waving my iPhone and purse. Basically there will always be scummy people, and if you are a victim of crime of course it isn't your fault, but it's human nature to want to prevent these things happening in the first place.

Hi Squidgy, the page in question has been changed after I challenged WMP about it this afternoon. The original image was one of a woman, with the text "Let your hair down, not your guard"

SGM posted about it here.

Catherine, thank you for reminding people of the We Believe You campaign. It feels it's much needed right now

Lottapianos · 03/08/2012 17:40

mame11, you're being offensive and insensitive. We're discussing rape - it's not difficult to understand why this is a difficult and emotive topic for anyone with an ounce of empathy.

cogitosum · 03/08/2012 18:44

Mame and other rape apologists I can't understand your logic. Say a woman is out with friends and decides to be driven home by a male friend she is statistically more likely to be raped than if she walks home alone in the dark.. So where are the campaigns saying 'don't get a friend to take you home'?
