Doreen Lawrence and the Olympics

Am I the only one who thinks it was very unreasonable and was rather bemused thought wtf on seeing Doreen Lawrence walking into the Olympic arena helping to carry the Olympic flag?! Has she done something to embody the spirit of the Olympics that I have missed? Did she win first prize at her primary school sports day when competitive sport at that level was allowed? Grin She's not even an elected politician and I didn't see Dave or Boris in the arena. They stayed firmly in their seats where they belong. Also saw that woman from Liberty. Am in Shock about the whole thing. Nice to see them when many of our previous Olympians had the 'starring' role of just standing around. Daley Thompson anyone? Hmm

Bloody hell.

I'm sure she would give anything not to carry that flag, you know, the reason behind why she was in that position.

Really not a nice thread.

That was grammatically incorrect, but really, I'm aghast that anyone would actually articulate those thoughts and in such a manner.

They did give the story of each of the flag bearers last night if you were listening. She was there because of Liberty which promotes the protection of civil liberty and human rights

MushroomSoup · 28/07/2012 21:33

TBH I was so moved I cried, seeing Doreen Lawrence. I think she was a well deserved participant. So personally I think YABU!

Amykins · 28/07/2012 21:34

Perhaps you are unreasonable.

JamieandTheOlympicTorch · 28/07/2012 21:34

Don't engage

SparklingGoldMedals · 28/07/2012 21:34

YABU.

Sassybeast · 28/07/2012 21:34

Yeah. Cos like, she's done nothing to challenge racism and bigotry in the face of great personal tragedy innit. What WUZ she doing there ? Biscuit

SimplySoo · 28/07/2012 21:34

The point was that all those six flag holders had done important things for integrating communities. They were all involved in civil liberties, world peace, etc.

All the people carrying the flag were people who work trying to promote peace, justice, togetherness, etc. They weren't supposed to be sporting people. These qualities are all things which the Olympics is supposed to promote/embody.

stargirl1701 · 28/07/2012 21:36

You are the only one wondering.

shattereddreams · 28/07/2012 21:36

I agree OP and so did DH.
I admire the woman greatly for her charitable work.
Quite what her fight for justice has got to do with the Olympics is also beyond me.

TeaMakesItToTheTop · 28/07/2012 21:36

YABVU.

Can only assume you don't know why she got her OBE.. so from WiKi

In the aftermath of the inquiry, Lawrence continued to campaign for justice for her son as well as for other victims of racist crime. She has worked to secure further reforms of the police service.
She founded the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust[7] to promote a positive community legacy in her son's name. Lawrence has been selected to sit on panels within the Home Office[8] and the Police Service, and she is a member of both the board and the council of Liberty,[9] the human rights organisation, as well as being a patron of hate crime charity Stop Hate UK.[10]

She embodies the Olympic principles.
