Doreen Lawrence and the Olympics

Am I the only one who thinks it was very unreasonable and was rather bemused thought wtf on seeing Doreen Lawrence walking into the Olympic arena helping to carry the Olympic flag?! Has she done something to embody the spirit of the Olympics that I have missed? Did she win first prize at her primary school sports day when competitive sport at that level was allowed? Grin She's not even an elected politician and I didn't see Dave or Boris in the arena. They stayed firmly in their seats where they belong. Also saw that woman from Liberty. Am in Shock about the whole thing. Nice to see them when many of our previous Olympians had the 'starring' role of just standing around. Daley Thompson anyone? Hmm

OP posts:

What POE said ^

sensuallettuce · 28/07/2012 22:33

Look at the celebs who carried the torch?

Chris Moyles for one.

Justify that?

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 28/07/2012 22:34

Fair point Birds

CinnabarRed · 28/07/2012 22:34

OATPOF - are you seriously trying to suggest that DL is only on it for the attention?

fanoftheinvisibleman · 28/07/2012 22:35

Well there is nothing like being filled with pride watching the ceremony last night only to feel utterly deflated when you read I thread like this.

I thought our ceremony was so special because we included the people we did. Yes there are lots of deserving people out there, and she is one of them. She was chosen and had every right to be there. And every right for people watching to feel proud of her and her achievements. I am.

Your comments are tinged with irony given Ms Lawrence called John Terry's behaviour racist after he had just been cleared of racially abusing John Terry...

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 28/07/2012 22:37

Bereaved parents just can't fucking win can they?
Not enough to be the catalyst of for massive change.
They have to prove they would have done it anyway.
How selfish of any of us to do things in honour of our children

NarkedRaspberry · 28/07/2012 22:37

That was the torch relay. They carried the torch - the flamey, burny pointy thing?

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 28/07/2012 22:37

John terry abused John terry?

AlbertoFrog · 28/07/2012 22:38

DL probably doesn't feel worthy of carrying the flag either.

Which is only one of the reasons why she should have that honour.

How small minded must one be to think this never mind start a thread about it.

Here OP my very first Biscuit.

littlebluechair · 28/07/2012 22:38

You can not draw a parallel between a tyrant and Doreen Lawrence. Do you understand nothing about values? Values are not just opinions. Someone saying 'I think everyone is of equal worth' is not equal to someone saying 'I think people are of unequal worth based on whatever'.

Equality is a value. Inequality is not a value.

CatholicDad · 28/07/2012 22:39

Oops!

elizaregina · 28/07/2012 22:39

ohdoadmit

if you have lost someone yourself i wouldnt bother with this utter tripe if i were you....

its very very imature and ridiculous what O said - ...dont upset yourself....

NarkedRaspberry · 28/07/2012 22:39

Even he thinks he's a racist...

Oh let me see
Fair play
Justice
Struggle
Dignity through Adversity
Push through obstacles not for personal glory but for the greater good

I wonder if any those values shown by DL might be relevant to the Olympics.

I would love to say what I really think but sadly my post would be deleted.

HokeyCokeyPigInAPokey · 28/07/2012 22:42

MrsDevere don't let a stupid, ignorant thread like this upset you.

We know what wonderful things you have done recently in memory of your precious girl.

edam · 28/07/2012 22:43

littlebluechair - in effect there was existing policy saying racism is OK. The Met had been getting away with it for decades. The policy may not have been written down and publicised, but it was certainly in operation. Racism was enabled, tolerated, allowed to flourish unchecked and even encouraged.

I do despair at the confusion of the poster saying it would be more worthy had she somehow achieved all this without her son being murdered. WTF? You think no-one had tried to point out the institutional racism that permeated the Met? You think senior police officers, judges, politicians et al would have listened to an ordinary member of the public? They'd been remarkably deaf to anyone who tried to raise the issue. Doreen Lawrence was thrust into a tragic position by the death of her son - a death that was a catalyst but which I'm very sure the poor woman wishes had never happened.

thebody · 28/07/2012 22:44

What a vile thread.

NarkedRaspberry · 28/07/2012 22:44

They're stirring. Anyone posting this on a parenting site is looking to cause upset and argument.

JamieandTheOlympicTorch · 28/07/2012 22:44

Outraged

Sorry - you are not making sense.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 28/07/2012 22:45

I am now wondering if the money I raised before she died is somehow worth more than the money I raised after.
really Confused

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 28/07/2012 22:45

FFS, some of you really o like o read words that jut aren't there don't you?

I never said she was selfish, never said she was in it or the attention, nor did I imply those things.

But you lot just carry on making up whatever shite you like.
