Doreen Lawrence and the Olympics

Am I the only one who thinks it was very unreasonable and was rather bemused thought wtf on seeing Doreen Lawrence walking into the Olympic arena helping to carry the Olympic flag?! Has she done something to embody the spirit of the Olympics that I have missed? Did she win first prize at her primary school sports day when competitive sport at that level was allowed? Grin She's not even an elected politician and I didn't see Dave or Boris in the arena. They stayed firmly in their seats where they belong. Also saw that woman from Liberty. Am in Shock about the whole thing. Nice to see them when many of our previous Olympians had the 'starring' role of just standing around. Daley Thompson anyone? Hmm

Jamie

Yours is the post that has made me re think my opinion the most. You are right.

I didn't really put a huge amount of thought into my first post. Clearly I should have done. I was thinking what I have already said really, that people who have no reason to inspire them to do good work (unpaid) are more worthy. But at the same time I'm well aware that no good deed is completely selfless, even if all that is achieved is a feel good factor. I was thinking that someone in DLs position probably had more to gain than someone not in her position, as what she has done has probably helped her too, but actually, you are right that she also had more reason than most to do nothing at all positive and it would be understandable if she did the exact opposite.

I get that now. And like I already said, it wouldn't even have occurred to me to think about it at all had I not read the OP.

To be fair they did say:

"Shami Chakrabati the founder of Liberty"

which is total utter bollocks.

They should have kept with the likes of Gebrselassie.

IamtheZombie · 28/07/2012 23:58

It's not Shami's fault that the script writer didn't do their research properly.

any one noticed the OP has fucked off? i would ignore, ignore and ignore a bit more.

OP What a vile thing to say.

Have my very first Biscuit

I have been deleted for stating that the OP should educate herself before engaging in debate.

So it's acceptable to post a bigoted nasty post but to suggest that someone is ignorant because they hold such views means that you get your post deleted. Angry

Not quite - the second half of your post contained a clear suggestion that the OP is hard-of-thinking. Which may or may not be true, but is definitely a personal attack, and thus deletable.

GoTeamkozy · 29/07/2012 11:27

Hard of thinking! :o Wish I'd thought of that, there are so many occasions I could've used that on other threads.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 29/07/2012 11:39

Not exactly staying well away from insults yourself there are you MN? Hmm

If I were to choose who to carry the flag, my criteria would be:

Individuals (not necessarily elected or salaried) who have strove to make a difference in their community or the Country as a whole, not for their own glory of financial gain.

The whole olympic thing of fairness and inclusivity.

So anyone who has fought descrimination, stood up for the voiceless, have stood their corned and faced their detractors with dignity and strength.

Or past olympians who have excelled in their field without drugs or other forms of cheating and have won with grace and been a role model to younger athletes and children.

Not politicians, heads of business or royalty!

I didn't see that part, so don't know all the names who carried the flag, but those I do seem to meet the criteria.

Since initially reading this thread on Saturday, I've been really puzzling over A) why a thread like this would be started and B) what kind of nastiness is behind such thinking.

I really am astonished.

But it's fab to come back and read all the positive support for Doreen Lawrence - niceness fights nastiness and wins hands down!
