Doreen Lawrence and the Olympics

PickandMixisthefuture · 28/07/2012 21:30

Am I the only one who thinks it was very unreasonable and was rather bemused thought wtf on seeing Doreen Lawrence walking into the Olympic arena helping to carry the Olympic flag?! Has she done something to embody the spirit of the Olympics that I have missed? Did she win first prize at her primary school sports day when competitive sport at that level was allowed? Grin She's not even an elected politician and I didn't see Dave or Boris in the arena. They stayed firmly in their seats where they belong. Also saw that woman from Liberty. Am in Shock about the whole thing. Nice to see them when many of our previous Olympians had the 'starring' role of just standing around. Daley Thompson anyone? Hmm

outraged

"I agree OP.

She has done some amazing work, all credit to her for that. If she had done the same work without having lost her son in such tragic circumstances and with so much media attention surrounding it, then perhaps she would be more deserving of her place.""

I dont understand this.

you mean if her son had say been killed in a car accident - and then she sort of went off and did all she had done she would have been deserving of her place...

anyway - life's to short to spend on trolling people with low IQ's x

Brace yourself sensual........ Grin Grin

shattereddreams · 28/07/2012 22:14

She isn't political. As I said, she is great.
Her fight for justice is a hot political topic.

sensuallettuce · 28/07/2012 22:15

Wow that was quick Grin.

PermanentlyOnEdge · 28/07/2012 22:15

More deserving!!

I would say very few people alive are more deserving.

What have you done with your life OUTRAGED, that entitles you to such a remark?

WTAF???? I do not understand this point at all.

littlebluechair · 28/07/2012 22:18

Her fight for justice is a political hot potato - I think you need to elaborate on this point, no idea what you mean.

FutTheShuckUp · 28/07/2012 22:18

Oh fgs what unnecessary bile. I don't know why so many venomous people seem hellbent on spreading their nastiness all over MN lately. Nobody is spared it, even those who's children have been murdered.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 28/07/2012 22:18

I don't follow your reasoning outraged

Why would she deserve it more if she hadn't lost her son?
It's far easier to stay focused without the weight of grief holding you back. That woman has kept going for twenty years.
I couldnt go back to Work for 18 mths and I am still part time 6 years later.
Why on earth does she deserve less kudos for her work?

littlebluechair · 28/07/2012 22:19

hahaha - spot my Alan Partridgism! Sorry for misquoting Blush

FutTheShuckUp

totally agree - was feeling quite upset by some of these remarks.....it is just vile bile isnt it.

ridiculous.

shattereddreams · 28/07/2012 22:19

Can I just reply to little blue chair re the military and flag...
The history of flags is all steeped in military, so that makes sense to me.

TuftyFinch · 28/07/2012 22:19

Outragedattheprice. What on earth are you talking about? So if she'd been part of the WI basically? She didn't ask for her son to be murdered!!

Denise34 · 28/07/2012 22:19

The selection of flag bearers did seem a bit overly "right-on" for my liking. What has Shami Chakrabti got to do with the Olympics? I don't like the woman, I admit. It looked like Guardian readers had been let loose on that bit.

xkittyx · 28/07/2012 22:20

Explain how her fight for justice is in ANY WAY political. Seriously, explain please.

shattereddreams · 28/07/2012 22:21

Because she changed policy.

WildWorld2004 · 28/07/2012 22:21

I for one was glad it wasnt all sports people. I watched it with my 8 yr old & as we watched the whole opening ceremony i talked my dd through each part.

Who would you rather was carrying the flag then OP?? Seeing as you dont think one of them should be a mother who lost her son, didnt get justice & instead of sitting feeling sorry for herself has fought for something she believes in.

TuftyFinch · 28/07/2012 22:22

I was deleted for that?!

xkittyx · 28/07/2012 22:22

So what if she changed policy? She isn't aligned to any specific political party, she is a justice campaigner.
