To not let my 12 year old stay up for opening ceremony

He's in tears, I'm the worlds cruelest mother :( it goes on till 00.30 and I'm shattered. I've a 9 month old and 4 year old. Been a busy week with lots of days out. He's seen 2 different friends today and grandparents. His dad is picking him up at 9am, I am taking the little ones to a party as well so busy day tomorrow.

So am I being unreasonable?

Ds(6) wanted to stay up and watch it. As I've got a rare day off today, I said he could as we could lie in, but he made it to 10.30 and asked to go to bed anyway. He was out like a light and has only just got up so he's still had nearly 11 hours sleep an is happy that he saw most of the opening ceremony. I don't think he'd have been bothered about watching the teams come out anyway.

It's a one off and I think it's nice that kids are interested.

Glad you let him watch it, dd aged 4 watched it till 10.30pm then fell asleep on the floor! She loved tr voldermort an Mary poppins: still talking about it this morning and asking to watch it on iplayer

It's trying to get them to turn off kids tv and let me watch some of it this morning that's the issue now.

There is now a cat in one of the sleeping bags, and a bit of previously owned pizza on the table.....

It was great,wasn't it?

We know how to put a show on!!!!

No, I see a parent with clear rules who is still prepared to be reasonable and negotiate. As a parent of a 17 and a 21 year old, that attitude will be very useful to you in forming good relationships with your teenagers.
Well done. Grin

Glad you did. When Torvill and Dean competed in their final competition in 1984 it was delayed till 3am because of power cuts. My mother wouldn't let me get up to watch it. In the nicest possible way I've never forgiven her and although I've seen the footage many times since, it's not the same.

DS1 (just 4) went to bed as normal but woke up and came downstairs. He sat with us and watched about an hour and half - he was entranced, and collapsed in giggles when Mr Bean hit the bum note Grin He is still talking about it this morning, really glad he saw some of it.

DS is up and about. We're watching his favorite bits again. We did have tickets for the Judo today but couldn't make it due to having to move recently. (Tickets went to a good home for free though!)

I'm so glad your DS got to watch it. Grin

DS2 fell asleep at 10pm, he's 8yo. 18mo DS3 stayed awake right till the end though, clapping every time they announced a new country's athletes. Hmm

14yo DD had a sleepover round her friend's house and they stayed up to watch it, she saw the whole lot.

10yo DS1 was at his dad's, his step-nan had an 'olympic' BBQ, and they watched it there. I know he saw the whole thing, as he texted me to ask who the really old man was that sung at the end...

And for those of you that are concerned your 4yo's won't remember, here's my story.

Aged just over 3yo, I watched the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984. My Dad told me to choose a sport. I chose Judo. Brian Jacks has a lot to answer for.

I competed in Judo competitions nationwide from age 4yo, and was national under 11 champion at 9yo. I only stopped when I was 15yo, due to being moved (family circumstances) to an area with no Dojo within 150 miles.

It IS inspirational, and it IS memorable, even for very young DC.

Had I not stopped at 15, there is a high chance that I would have been in the 1998 squad. The girl who took that place I had regularly beaten on the competition circuit since I was 4yo...
