....to want to ban page 3???

DianaVreeland · 20/07/2012 16:07

I remember seeing a page 3 girl for the first time when I was about 6 as my neighbour bought the Sun. I cringed inwardly, and haven't stopped feeling the same since. I have 5 nieces 3 nephews and my own 2 sons.....I hope they could grow up without seeing images of women objectified like this. Clearly I am not showing this to them but at some point I know they will. Does anyone else feel the same?

TyrannosaurusBex there are already campaigns to end Page 3 and the objectification of women and girls in the media - Object and other women's groups submitted evidence to the Leveson Inquiry and spoke at it too, on this very subject. They've been doing some great stuff - you can see their work on it here

Shagmundfreud · 08/09/2012 09:53

I would have no problem with it at all, as long as page 4 had a similar sized photo of a very young good looking naked man showing his arse, and perhaps his twig and berries as well.

Seriously - we should campaign for this. If we're going to have leering and objectifying people's bodies, let's have men being subject to the same as women.

rulebrittania

What an ignorant thing to say.

emcwill74 · 08/09/2012 10:21

thecook: deprive them of earning a living??!! Is the Sun the ONLY place where a woman is paid to get her tits out? Is there simply no other publication/website whatsoever that would pay for that? (And do they have no other skill set at all they could draw on for other work anyway?) As I have repeatedly said, this is call to end page 3, not all glamour modelling. It has no place in a newspaper. What's more, despite the rife assumption that they earn loads from it, the one poster who has given figures on here from insider knowledge of being a tabloid journo has said that 5 years ago it was actually very little - £300 per photo. None of the posters who say they have modelled for it have contradicted that so far.

Those that say it is not for governments to ban it, this petition is asking Mohan to stop the practice, not the government to ban it anyway.

GhostShip · 08/09/2012 10:24

I got more that that. That's two weeks wage for some people don't you know.

FreudianSlipper · 08/09/2012 10:27

yes it is horrible

i remember a calling for it to be banned in the 80's and the women objecting to it being laughed of course they were man haters, ugly women who can not get a man Hmm

i am sure samantha fox was only 16 when she did page 3 wtf were her family thinking

GhostShip · 08/09/2012 10:33

If you don't want to see it, don't look. Why don't you put your time and effort into a cause that's just. Instead of sticking your noses in where it isn't wanted. Oh because you don't like seeing women 'objectified'? I know for a fact there's at least one person here who wants to ban it because that's the only way she can stop her husband from looking.

Pathetic.

expatinscotland · 08/09/2012 10:35

It doesn't belong in a national newspaper in the opinion of some, GhostShip. That's why threads like this appear.

FutTheShuckUp · 08/09/2012 10:40

Ahh along comes the well thought out 'u iz all jelus' argument...

GhostShip · 08/09/2012 10:42

fut do I write like that? No. It's already been touched upon before if you deigned to read the whole thread. AND I know this because one of the people in here actually told me.

expat people need to get their priorities straight. There's much worse in newspapers that we should be addressing.

FreudianSlipper · 08/09/2012 10:45

those who are saying it does no harm what would you think of your daughters coming home and saying well so so and who does page 3 modeling earns good money and i want to do the same, this is what has happened many times this is why some young women are still posing for page 3

of course it is harming it is seeing young women purely as a sex object and nothing else something i hope no parent would want for their daughter or son

GhostShip · 08/09/2012 10:47

I would respect her decision.

Does that make me a bad mother? Obviously in your eyes.

Tis a shame that we're allowed to use our brains but not our bodies.

FreudianSlipper · 08/09/2012 10:53

bad parent no just disappointing that someone in that positions does not have higher aspirations for their daughter that they will be in a national paper and want material and nothing else for so many men

i feel my child is worthy of much more than that

FreudianSlipper · 08/09/2012 10:54

wank material...

GhostShip · 08/09/2012 10:55

I did it. I'm now training to be a midwife.

FreudianSlipper · 08/09/2012 10:58

and

like i said i expect better for my children, i do not have a daughter i would be horrified if this is something my daughter wanted to d, i would be surprised as it would not be from my influence

you may respect your daghters decision to follow that path i would not

GhostShip · 08/09/2012 11:00

My point is we dont use it as a career choice. It's a sideline that pays well. People may well look down on me but I'm the one who'll be delivering future babies.

FreudianSlipper · 08/09/2012 11:07

again i would not want that for my daughter, i would not myself pose with my boobs out to earn lots of money. i want it banned so women to do not see this as a future career path there are better ways to earn money. as you say people do look down of glamour models i do not want that for my child or any women

NigellasGuest · 08/09/2012 11:17

Page 3 isn't as bad as a lot of the porn out there, but the point is that people should make a choice to view porn and not have it forced on them as a kind of default scenario.
For example, I was going to pay for petrol and the wind caused the pages of the newspapers on display in the forecourt blow a bit, and there was Page 3 in all its dubious glory. I didn't want to see it and I'm not as impressionable as say a 12 yr old who would subliminally absorb the message that this sort of thing is generally OK.
What I'm trying to say is YES BAN IT ...... and Hmm to anyone who tries to tell me that my opinion is this because I am 48 yrs old and relatively small-boobed.

FutTheShuckUp · 08/09/2012 11:21

Many people who will be delivering people's babies, saving lives, arresting criminals will have got themselves through life WITHOUT the aid of selling sex. What a ridiculous argument.

GreenD · 08/09/2012 11:25

Britain is hardly the only country in the world that has pictures of semi-naked women in newspapers, in some countries they have them on the front page. And the Sun is hardly the only British newspaper that has pictures of semi-naked women in it! So why single it out?

NigellasGuest · 08/09/2012 11:27

Because it is mainstream

GhostShip · 08/09/2012 11:29

fut yes and your point is? I worked as a carer too at the time. Doesn't matter does it? We dont sell sex. People want to pay for looking at what we are as people. So what? Like I said before. We can sell our brains but not our bodies? Who decided upon that?

I made a lot of money and I managed to keep a roof over my mums head when she had a brain tumour. Id do it again. I'd do it now if I still had the body!

Shagmundfreud · 08/09/2012 11:37

Ghostship - I have no problem for you getting your tits out in a photo for money for men to wank over.

I just object to the sexism of the whole thing. There are many women and gay men who would love to stare at a very young man's genitals while eating their breakfast. Why don't newspapers like the sun have regular highly sexualised images of handsome naked men for their readers to enjoy?

RuleBritannia · 08/09/2012 11:38
