....to want to ban page 3???

DianaVreeland · 20/07/2012 16:07

I remember seeing a page 3 girl for the first time when I was about 6 as my neighbour bought the Sun. I cringed inwardly, and haven't stopped feeling the same since. I have 5 nieces 3 nephews and my own 2 sons.....I hope they could grow up without seeing images of women objectified like this. Clearly I am not showing this to them but at some point I know they will. Does anyone else feel the same?

Yes, IME it's usually the same men who have a problem with public bf who like p3.

LadyBeagleEyes · 07/09/2012 20:48

They're just women Expat, who've made choices that you don't agree with.
I'm not saying it's the right decision, but 'selling their tits as wank fodder' is not a nice way to talk about them.

Saltycopporn · 07/09/2012 20:55

Pubes I take your point I really do but I'm still to be convinced that a ban is the answer. I'll bow out now and leave you to it . Wine is waiting

hightrees · 07/09/2012 21:13

But ladybeagle that's what it is. Which is why many of us (surely most of us?) don't think it's very, to use your word ....nice.

merrymouse · 07/09/2012 21:15

Haven't read whole thread, so sorry if this has already been discussed. However, The Sun just seems so dated in an age when so many people consume news and (and porn) on the internet. When they were arguing that they should be able to print those pictures of Prince Harry, my first thought was "who cares whether you print them - surely anybody that is interested has already seen them?"

Page 3 just seems past its sell by date - yes the concept is degrading, but couldn't any lad with a smart phone find a similar picture in a couple of seconds?

germyrabbit · 07/09/2012 21:16

its all a bit crackers that we still have this

make british media look like twats

expatinscotland · 07/09/2012 21:16

It's what it is, LadyBeagle. Same as guys who do the same thing. Hey, go for it! I don't disagree with it at all. Just don't think it belongs in a national newspaper, however trashy a rag it is, and call it what it is.

AllPastYears · 07/09/2012 21:18

We get the Sun at my work Hmm. I work in an office with educated people, not a 1970's-style car workshop, and out of the Sun, the Guardian and the i, the Sun seems to be the most popular Confused.

KarlosKKrinkelbeim · 07/09/2012 21:22

Is there any human being more laughable than the man who buys the Sun to look at page 3? It is truly low-rent, creepy behaviour by people whose sex lives one shudders to contemplate. Isn't the appopriate response ridicule, rather than legislation?

nikcname · 07/09/2012 22:06

I really hate it. Don't buy it, don't read it on line. Its like having a 70's feature wall in a modern house.
When I find friends read it it it makes me think hmm Hmm.
Not seen it for many years but assuming its still Jeremy Kyle in print.

TyrannosaurusBex · 07/09/2012 22:09

YANBU. Mumsnet should start a campaign to end it.

JamieandOscarSittinginATree · 07/09/2012 22:09

Karlos, I agree.

LadyBeagle - they are. They are deluding themselves if they think they aren't. Horrible men, at that. What's laughable is that they are called glamour models.

hmc · 08/09/2012 00:04

I keenly feel in a very personal way the objectification of women through page 3, advertising hoardings etc etc. As a young women I resented unwelcome advances from men to such an extent that I subconsciously gained weight to provide a buffer from this. The anonymity it conferred was welcome. I have since lost the weight and now find myself a target again. Page 3 and similar give men the impression that it is 'open season' on women - that we are always sexually available and ready to be wooed.

bethjoanne · 08/09/2012 00:19

i think people turn there nose up in public at breast feeding because men see them as sexual objects when they are there to feed your baby.on the other hand a picture of a women is nothing compared to lap dancing clubs -where men feel flatted as an attractive girl with a good body comes over chats putting them at ease and then offers a private 1 to 1 dance in a private room.a friend had a 2 women private dance act ! its a man s world! not much for us ladies is there?

Sparrowp · 08/09/2012 00:40

I went to a friends house, we were about 11, and her dad gave her the Sun. We sat down to read it and I thought - OMG your dad gives you porn! Shock

Was really worried for her! Still feel the same about it now.

TheQueenOfDiamonds · 08/09/2012 00:54

My problem with page 3 isn't the boobs, it's the airbrushing and the standard it sets.

Pendeen · 08/09/2012 00:58

" The Sun has the tenth-largest circulation of any newspaper in the world and the largest circulation of any daily newspaper in the United Kingdom.[1][4] It had an average daily circulation of 2,614,725 copies in March 2012.[1] Between July and December 2010 it had an average daily readership of approximately 7.6 million, of whom approximately 2.65 million were in the ABC1 demographic and 4.9 million in the C2DE demographic.[2] "

So yes, OP. YABU to decide that over 7 million people should only see / read what you consider 'correct'

FurCoatSkimpyKnickers · 08/09/2012 01:04

There is a place for nudity. It's not in a newspaper. It should be in a magazine for that industry.

thecook · 08/09/2012 01:46

My mate was a Sunday Sport model in the nineties. She proudly sent all her mates (me included) a cutting. Then she rung my house (I was still living with my parents at the time). My dad answered and she says 'Ere have you seen me in The Sport?'My dad stammers 'No dear, I read the Telegraph' Grin.

TBH It doesn't bother me. I only read the Evening. Standard. The girls are getting money. Let em get on with it. A job is a job.

thecook · 08/09/2012 02:45

orangeandlemons A mumsnet campaign to get rid of page 3 girls?

Good god.

So you want to deprive these ladies of earning a living? Some ladies (like myself) are independent and don't have (and don't want) a husband that pays for them.

Lavenderhoney · 08/09/2012 05:26

Loathe it. The reporting is crap too. Plus it seems so bigoted. My dad used to read it as he felt it was a working mans paper and he had a dreadful education because of the war and found the sun easiest to read. No idea why photos of topless 16 year olds shoud sell it better, this stuff is all over the Internet now.

Apparently they have the best sports reporting.

GreenD · 08/09/2012 05:45

I don't think they use 16 & 17 year olds anymore.

I never got the impression that they use airbrushing either the girls always looked fairly natural to me. Particularly compared to the girls on the front of many fashion mags aimed at women. They don't use girls with breast implants either.

RuleBritannia · 08/09/2012 08:30

thecook

They are not 'ladies', are they?

Jinsei · 08/09/2012 08:47

YADNBU. I hate page 3 and would hate dd to ever see this crap. DH is not from the UK and was appalled to see that we have pictures of semi-naked women in our "newspapers".

I'd like to see page 3 banned. That said, I don't think the newspapers should be allowed to publish pictures of naked people at all - the whole prince Harry thing was all wrong in my view too.
