to think that naming a baby shouldn't be a competition in stupidity

I don't really care what you name your baby, but I have noticed an ever increasing number of frankly attention grabbing names around, when the mother of 2 boys, names them JimiHendrix (one word) and BobDylan (again, one word) then AIBU to think it's getting a bit ott!

YABU. Variety is the spice of life. I much prefer classic names, but each to their own!

WorraLiberty · 10/07/2012 16:28

YANBU

I was just saying the same thing to my two DS's, 'Shutup' and 'Sitdown' Grin

DesperatelySeekingPomBears · 10/07/2012 16:30

YANBU I think a lot of parents forget that this is the name they're saddling their child with until they're old enough to choose to change it themselves, if they so wish.

I'd be very surprised if little JimiHendrix and little BobDylan aren't plain old James and Robert in 30 years time...

LentillyFart · 10/07/2012 16:30

Oh. So are you saying naming my imaginary twins Benson and Hedges would be a wrong thing?

TheHappyHissy · 10/07/2012 16:33

Oy, Pinot, Grigio! How many times do I have to tell you two?

Stop slurping the Froot Shoots!

WorraLiberty · 10/07/2012 16:33

How common Lentilly

Lambert and Butler are far superior

Ithinkitsjustme · 10/07/2012 16:34

Did you hear about the couple who were refused by the registrar, permission to name their twins "Fish" and "Chips" Confused

OP posts:
Dprince · 10/07/2012 16:46

I think people forget their babies are actual people who will have to live with that name.

Kayano · 10/07/2012 17:09

I saw a Saf-fire at the doctors a few weeks ago. I sat open mouthed. My mother had to elbow me in the ribs Wink

DuelingFanjo · 10/07/2012 17:15

nothing wrong with the name Bob, nothing wrong with the name Dylan. Nothing wrong with teh name Bob Dylan but BobDylan is just awful.

monsterchild · 10/07/2012 17:21

I think BobDylan and JimiHendrix are odd, but ok.

I do not think that Lucifer, Jihad, or Adolf Hiltler (this one was refused by vital stats, our registrar, so was changed to Aryan) are good names, and incidentally, these are not good parents. On many levels.

Yes, these are all real names of real children. Makes almost all other names ok by me!

DublinMammy · 10/07/2012 17:23

My dear little ones "Fuck" and "Off" never get asked to parties, I don't understand it.....

whattodoo · 10/07/2012 17:25

I agree. It's so wrong.

I gave my two ordinary names, they won't get ridiculed.

Jeremy and Kyle. Lovely boys.

GateGipsy · 10/07/2012 17:25

as I was born in the sixties, growing up it was always pretty easy to pick out the children whose parents were hippies. Although we didn't think that at the time tbh, just thought that they were names, not odd names. I guess to our parents generation they seemed ridiculous. Moon, Sun, Fire, Lake, Spring, Summer, Autumn, Cinnamon, Thunder, Coyote, and Flower.

Pandemoniaa · 10/07/2012 17:27

The problem with giving children bonkers very unusual names is that the child is the one who has to put up with any grief. Sure, they can eventually decide to be known by another name but why put your child through this in the first place? You can choose interesting names that aren't an awful cross to bear! I speak as someone who had a friend who insisted on naming her son after rather too many characters in Lord of the Rings. From the age of 13 onwards he refused to answer to anything other than "Joe".

LaLaGabby · 10/07/2012 17:31

I'm certain that the kids with the unusual names, by the time they are getting people to call them 'Joe' have also developed an unusual strength of character, serenity and self-confidence as a result of getting mocked so much throught the formative years...

Deadsouls · 10/07/2012 17:33

I love Bob Dylan but 'Bobdylan' as name is just WRONG!

redwhiteandblueeyedsusan · 10/07/2012 18:20

connor and dominic do not go well together, especially if you are the sort that likes to shorten names...

lolaflores · 10/07/2012 18:27

wasn't it david bowie's and frank zappa's kids (moon unit and some other bizarrity) changed their names when they grew up and wanted to be John and Mary?

lolaflores · 10/07/2012 18:27

In Brazil there are kids called Xerox appar!

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 10/07/2012 18:30

Zowie Bowie goes by Joe nowadays. Frank Zappas offspring were Dweezil adn Moon Unit, but I don't know what they call themselves now.

lovebunny · 10/07/2012 18:31

david bowie's son zowie bowie became joe jones and is now duncan jones. and in his forties. time flies.

Glitterknickaz · 10/07/2012 18:33

Dweezil still uses that, at least professionally. I think Moon Unit just ditched the Unit and is known as Moon...

lolaflores · 10/07/2012 18:36

In America, kids having surnames as first names. Fuckin stupid. Confusing too.

bumperella · 10/07/2012 18:38

My BIL changed his name from a perfectly nice, normal if slightly dull one to one he made up and is a bit... odd. He didthis when he was about 32, so not even a wierd teenage rebellion thing.
