to think we should be able to choose what our kids eat for lunch?

My friends son is starting school in September and she has been given a whole list of things he isn't allowed in his lunch box.Not just for allergy reasons,i understand those, but things like,no cheese sandwiches,as thats dairy and carbs together, and no ham as its processed,no yogurts if they have sweeteners in them.No tropical fruits, only berries, apples, pears and peaches, they are better for concentration.no white bread. No pasteurized juice.

I'm not saying that the above isn't true,my kids don't have sugary yogurts or white bread sandwiches,BUT i would like to think they could have them if they wanted to,and i do think that this is going about things in the wrong way?In the grand scheme of things,a cheese sandwich,a frube,a banana and some apple juice isn't that bad is it?I mean it could be worse?

that's a very long list of lunch dos and don'ts

is your friend going to stick to it?

WorraLiberty · 10/07/2012 12:14

Tell your friend to check again because I think those are guidelines rather than things that are actually banned.

Noqontrol · 10/07/2012 12:14

Whats wrong with cheese sandwiches? And having dairy and carbs together?

ThisIsAUsername · 10/07/2012 12:14

Absolutely fucking ridiculous, this bollocks makes my blood actually boil. They have the nerve to make such demand when the school meals are little more than slop? Angry

TwelveLeggedWalk · 10/07/2012 12:15

This is a joke, right? No diary and carbs together for a FOUR YEAR OLD BOY?

Cuddler · 10/07/2012 12:16

I thought that too,but I have seen the list when i was at her house, they are categorically not allowed! Im not sure what they would do if she did just send him with those things.Ds starts at a different school in September and at his it just says no peanuts,or lollies.

Which yogurts are acceptable then? And no cheese sandwiches? It sounds very odd

Cuddler · 10/07/2012 12:18

I dont know. There was lots of other stuff on it too, like Kiwis, also for allergy reasons but i didnt know you could be allergic to kiwi.

WorraLiberty · 10/07/2012 12:18

I'm just really struggling to believe these things are actually banned Confused

"and no ham as its processed"

Not all ham is processed Confused

Noqontrol · 10/07/2012 12:19

God my dds lunchbox must be absolute shite then. Apple juice, bananas, cheese sandwiches and frubes are regularly there Confused

WorraLiberty · 10/07/2012 12:20

And what about 'naice ham'....did it not mention that? Grin

OneHandFlapping · 10/07/2012 12:20

No tropical fruits? So that's no bananas then?

No pasteurised juice?

The lunchbox gestapo need to mind their own business.

Cuddler · 10/07/2012 12:20

It said something about nitrites in Ham,i dont know if it meant only processed ham.

pigletmania · 10/07/2012 12:21

Tell your friend to bloody ignore the non allergy ones and send her ds with a cheese sandwich and yogurt if that is what he likes

DowagersHump · 10/07/2012 12:21

DS would starve if he weren't allowed cheese sandwiches.

What a completely stupid list.

Incidentally, I am allergic to kiwis (it's quite common) but I don't think they should be banned.

bowerbird · 10/07/2012 12:22

No carbs and cheese together? How are Italians supposed to cope then?

RubyFakeNails · 10/07/2012 12:22

I would have to phone them and ask if not only are they being serious but exactly who wrote these guidelines, an over-zealous dinner lady or an actual nutritionist.

Aside from nuts (which still irritates me) I'd send him in with whatever I wanted.

I've posted before about the time my DD2's cake was confiscated, for no good reason.

Cuddler · 10/07/2012 12:23

Well she is a raw vegan and he is still being bf and he doesnt eat well at all, pretty much the only thing she can get him to eat is smoothies, yogurts(sugary ones)fruit, pasta with cheese and jam sandwiches. So i think she will have to tbh else the poor boy will be starving all day.

AMumInScotland · 10/07/2012 12:23

Is this a mainstream school or some sort of "alternative" place? The list sounds like a middle-class mummies "Oh my child will never...." list rather than a sensible list of things to permit/ban.

GangstaGranny · 10/07/2012 12:24

I always give my DS ham or cheese in his sandwiches as I was of the (obviously misguided) imprsiion that these were better for him than jam, chocolate spread or marmalade which are his preferred fillings!

Flossiechops · 10/07/2012 12:24

No way would a school put all of those things on a banned list. A lot of that food is the staple diet for families struggling financially. I dont think for a minute that this is true especially the bit about concentration being affected! Utter rubbish!!

holyfishnets · 10/07/2012 12:24

It wouldn't bother me on the whole as I like to feed my kids well. I do however think the carbs/dairy and the fruit rule are over the top.

TheArmadillo · 10/07/2012 12:24

If its a state school and they insist that its 'the rules' then your friend should contact the LA. The no dairy with carbs is insane? What scientific evidence have they to back that up with - its not nhs advice, which is what I would expect them to follow.

If its just guidelines then ignore the ones that aren't allergy based.
