to not want to pay extra for slightly over weight luggage on a plane .........

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/07/2012 17:22

basically flew back from holiday last week and going out there my oh and I were 3 kg over the 40kg shared luggage weight and had to pay £30 in fees - £10 per kg - ouch

yet studying the check in queue there were at least 20 people who obv weigh much more then 6.5lbs (3kg roughly) more then me - prob more like 10 times

so aibu to want airplanes to take in consideration what the passenger weighs and their luggage - ie the slimmer you are the more allowance you can have

btw i am far from a skinny minny at a size 14/16 - though neither would i say i am grossly overweight but seems unfair all pay the same for a seat

No sympathy whatsoever for you going over weight limit.

You are taking too much crap.

Perfectly possible to travel hand luggage only for 10 days, not wear a thing twice, having going out stuff and a load of books and camera equipment.

I wish they would enforce bag limits and weights more tbh. Just to annoy everyone with more stuff than common sense.

Hopeforever · 08/07/2012 22:56

I only take enough clothes for 3 days, however long it is, a long weekend or 2 weeks.
I couldn't care less if I wear the same outfit twice
It saves time unpacking when you get there and packing to leave
If its a hot country the washing dries in seconds
Less stress at the airport
Less money spent on clothes before you go
Less washing when you get home

Last time I took a whole suitcase of clothes was in my honeymoon some 18 years ago. Never again

Cabin baggage is all we need.

Trying Air of course they would charge you and yes they would without a doubt charge a person weighing in more than the average weight ( they decide) at check in. I expect Mr pits of the earth O'Leary is trying to get it passed by the CAA or whoever.

StuntGirl · 08/07/2012 23:08

You're being ridiculously unreasonable.

Airlines don't do this because they'd end up discriminating wildly. Tall people would be charged more than short people. Someone (naturally) heavier would be charged more than someone (naturally) thinner. People without eating disorders would be charged more than anorexics. Men would be charged more than women. Some races would get charged more than others...and so on.

You choose to pack more clothes than the average person. You must then accept the consequence which is extra charges. Don't blame fat people because you can't/won't pack lightly.

Agree wholeheartedly with this.

When the usual baggage allowance was 20 Kg per person and once DD hit 2 yrs, I could pack for me, DH and DD within 40 Kg quite easily. Every year at least one person would comment "You do know your DD has her own baggage allowance don't you?" and DH would chip in hiliariously, not "yeah but I wont carry it"

For the last 2 years DD has had her own case, but the usual allowance seems to have gone down to 15Kg. However, we've still not gone over.

I think you must be taking too much OP. Rather like my mum!

(reminds me of the time at mum and dad's house, ironing before packing for holiday the next day. At the same time DH said "Are you taking all that?" and my dad said "It that all you are taking?" DH never complained again Grin )

If you are travelling on a budget airline and want to wear two fresh outfits a day, then you are going to have to stump up some cash.

It's a luxury to have different clothes every day, and you have to pay for luxuries.

There is no need to have a large number of outfits given that we all use deodorants and not many of us dribble food on ourselves. These clothes cn be aired and spot-cleaned as necessary. You will never see the other holidaymakers again and no one is keeping track.

My standard packing for a one-week beach holiday is 2 going-into-town or evening outfits (eg maxi dress or skirt/top), 3 'active' outfits (ie shorts and tops), 2 bathing suits, 1 pool wrap, beach towel, 10 knickers, one nightshirt, spare sandals, sun cream, first aid kit, sanpro and iPad (with kindle app).

I wear my warm clothes (trousers, cardigan) to travel in as well as my only bra.

BULLSHIT

That is all.

Ah, the eloquence!

You need one of these Smile

or for the traveller on a budget for all the family Grin

Weigh your suitcase, you might be surprised how heavy it is. I only did this recently and found mine weighed a massive 8kg (canvas on a frame, four wheels, pretty big). Thus I was only actually getting 12kg of luggage allowance on flights.

I have since downsized to a hard-shell case weighing 4.5kg (John Lewis 'basics' collection, apparently made in Samsung factory but without quality lining so was 100 quid) which is one of the lightest you can get.
Profligate defence: I fly a lot so it was worth the expense on a new suitcase...

Hammy02 · 09/07/2012 14:23

YABU. I am v.tall so weigh more than the average woman. It's not my fault that I weight more than average. Having said that, I do think that if someone is so big that they spill onto the next seat, they should have to pay for an additional seat.

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/07/2012 14:24

So if I travelled on ba for example then I wouldn't be charged??

Ryan are budget but still expect to fill my 20kg reagardleee who I fly with

Can't work out how to pack less lol Grin

Only budget/low-cost airlines (Ryanair, Easyjet, BMI Baby etc) charge for luggage. Scheduled airlines (British Airways, Virgin, Lufthansa, Qantas, KLM, Air France etc etc etc) do not - yet - charge for luggage.

By the way, I often find cheaper tickets on the scheduled airlines these days when compared with cost of a budget flight, all of its extras including luggage, and extra cost of getting to less convenient airport.
It's worth checking other airlines.

PS, A friend who is an experienced pilot in the UK says Ryanair are an aviation accident waiting to happen, because he says that they cut corners in order to save costs, including technical stuff as well as making their staff - and pilots - work such longer hours. Obviously that's just his opinion and might be completely untrue. However, I find it an unnerving conversation topic and consequently wouldn't fly with that airline any more!

Rosa · 09/07/2012 15:02

Ryan air have a 15kg luggaga allowance ba european flights in economy 23kg.....q

ClaireBunting · 09/07/2012 15:15

It is very easy to pack less.

Lay out all your clothes that you want to take, and pick precisely half of them.

NannyR · 09/07/2012 16:08

BA also allow you to take up to 23kg of hand luggage (as long as it fits within the height/width/length measurements and you can lift it unaided) plus a handbag or laptop bag.

I'm sympathetic OP.
I always take too much stuff, I just can't travel light, however hard I try.
I always think that if I leave something behind, I'll regret it.
I came back from the Canaries a couple of years ago and we were way over the limit, but I was with ds and his 2 mates (all teens) so we just moved things around in our 4 bags.
We were fine outbound, but we had rather too much duty free booze on the way back.
It's so cheap in the Canaries, what can I say.

cardibach · 10/07/2012 16:43

Outraged - I don't look the same every day for two weeks. I look the same on some of them, and I don't care. I often look the same at home, too. If anything needs it, I wash it out and it dries really quickly. I don't care if my underwear matches, and anyway you are often wearing a bikini top not a bra.
I don't like carrying heavy bags, and on many of the holidays I go on I have to carry luggage regularly.

Brightspark1 · 11/07/2012 22:05

2 bras, one on, one off. Take Travel Wash! It drives me nuts waiting ages to check in behind people that take their entire wardrobe with them and don't bother to weigh their luggage before they get to the airport.
