to not want to pay extra for slightly over weight luggage on a plane .........

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/07/2012 17:22

basically flew back from holiday last week and going out there my oh and I were 3 kg over the 40kg shared luggage weight and had to pay £30 in fees - £10 per kg - ouch

yet studying the check in queue there were at least 20 people who obv weigh much more then 6.5lbs (3kg roughly) more then me - prob more like 10 times

so aibu to want airplanes to take in consideration what the passenger weighs and their luggage - ie the slimmer you are the more allowance you can have

btw i am far from a skinny minny at a size 14/16 - though neither would i say i am grossly overweight but seems unfair all pay the same for a seat

Are but if you are skinny, it should mean that your clothes weight less, then us lardy arses. By the way this lardy arse, has a very complicated medical history and has to get on the plane with walking aids, would they be part of my weight allowance? Seriously people, you over packed, not my problem! I have serval nasty medical conditions one of which means I am over weight (size 14 to 16) not your problem.

But I dare an airline to try and weigh me and charge me accordingly for my excessive fat, I have a difficult life and live in a lot of pain, thank god the OP is not incharge of the world. Or all of us with medical conditions should be banned / priced out of flying?

Get a grip.

oldraver · 08/07/2012 20:03

I think with summer holiday clothes its easier to stick withing the limit. I went to Florida when they had an exceptional cold spell so took quite few more heavyweight clothes I wouldn't normally. My case was just under on my scales and came out at 32.5 kg at the airport just under the allowance

Brightspark1 · 08/07/2012 20:13

How do you manage to take so much? At most I have only taken 6 kgs for my personal use for a two week holiday. I didn't take much more when the dcs were small. I've often wondered what people manage to put in all these huge suitcases. Please do tell!

RandomMess · 08/07/2012 20:25

Sorry if I have offended, I was being tongue in cheek really about the whole situation of that they need to know what weight they are carrying.

I cannot remember the last time I flew - can't afford it, don't even have a passport!!!!

I truly think flying has gone full circle - it's becoming something for the wealthy again with rising taxes and fuel costs.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 08/07/2012 20:25

I have no idea how people pack so lightly! I always take some of DHs space/weight allowance!

I think much of my weight is taken up with toiletries, I use a lot of hair products because I have crazy hair, but I spend more time using body cream and the like on holiday.

We also take fins and masks and snorkels on beach holidays, so they weigh quite a bit. Plus towels, clothes, shoes. It all adds up!

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 08/07/2012 20:28

People with medical conditions can be priced out of flying already. Airlines will let a certain amount of medical equipment go free, but one of my friends takes a hoist and a toilet chair with him, and was charged an extra £200! Angry

It's blatant discrimination and I can't understand how it isn't illegal, at least for airlines that are based in this country or fly in this country.

CogPsych · 08/07/2012 20:37

They should weigh the passenger and luggage at the same time (i'm serious).

I should be allowed to take on a suitcase that weighs not a kg more than the bingo wings on the woman in front without being fined.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 08/07/2012 20:42

YANBU.

Every passenger should have a weight allowance that includes their weight.

Get to the airport, stand on scales with bag. No humiliation involved as weighed with luggage. Extra kilos could be prebooked.

pootle123 · 08/07/2012 20:44

I flew with Fly Be the other day on business. I took hand luggage only as I was only going to be away for one night. My bag was way under the weight limit but because my case wouldn't fit in their stupid sizing rack thingy at the departure gate (which is incidentally smaller than any other airline's. I know cos I checked on the way back and my case would have fitted in all of them - even Ryan Air ). I had to check my bag into the hold. Fair enough - however there was a woman in front of me who was carrying a handbag, holdall and plastic bags full of Duty Free and she was just waved on. It's not fair [stamps foot]

pootle123 · 08/07/2012 20:49

In answer to your question (sorry, rant over) YANBU, it's the fecking airlines who are unreasonable imo.

arwen1506 · 08/07/2012 20:55

In first/business they waive the charge, it's a perk, if everyone had it it would be a problem for the baggage handlers, upto 32 kg, repetitive over the years could become a bigger health issue than 20-23kg.

As far as obese passengers, a few airlines have come under fire as they charge for an extra seat, which I agree with, if you can't fit into your seat it's unfair on the person sitting next to you. Then you would be paying your extra bit for the fuel.

MayaAngelCool · 08/07/2012 21:14

Katienana, I was once asked to seat swap with a married couple on a one-hour flight. I had done a full week's work full-on abroad with very little sleep, was absolutely shattered and was missing my husband after not seeing him for a whole week, so in an extremely rare bout of selfishness I refused to move.

As it happened the person on the other side of the aisle was more community-minded than I was feeling at the time, so they managed to sit next to each other with the aisle in between. They then spent the entire hour reading different papers, and spoke not a single word! AND to make matters more judginess-worthy she was reading the Daily Mail!!!

OP, as someone else said yanbu to want to. But please. We cannot weigh people at airports. We can not weigh people at airports.

ivykaty44 · 08/07/2012 21:45

Every passenger should have a weight allowance that includes their weight.

so a woman who is 5f2 is going to have the advantage over a woman of 5f10 as she should weigh less. So will you include a height calculation in this or not? Or will this just be for the benifit of people who didn't grow as tall

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/07/2012 21:49

bright spark 6kg?????????? really omfg

so im semi u but some of you agree that ianbu Grin

Another one who can't understand how anyone just going on holiday manages to be over the baggage allowance. What are you taking? 2 week holiday in the sun:
2 bikinis/costumes
beach towel
2 or 3 pairs of shorts
14 pairs of knickers
a spare bra
6 t shirt type tops
pjs
a couple of dresses/other going out to dinner outfits
light cardigan
one pot of suncream (buy the rest out there)
washbag with toothpaste/brush, shower gel, shampoo, conditioner
perfume
one pair walking shoes
1/2 pairs flip flop type shoes
beach towel
books/kindle

That will be nowhere near the limit. What esle are you taking?

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 08/07/2012 22:26

What else are you taking?

Well I'm taking more than two bikinis, more than two bras, more than two pairs of footwear, and more than a couple of evening outfits. I'm unlikely to take shorts and t shirts though, I prefer skirts and vests.

Seriously though, you take that little? Doesn't it bother you that you look exactly the same every day for wo weeks?

JustTheRightAmountOfWrong · 08/07/2012 22:30

Just arrived back from holiday, my case was 10kg. Took all the usual holiday paraphernalia, just not a different outfit / pair of shoes for every night.

It's just a question of packing sensibly, not rocket science.

JustTheRightAmountOfWrong · 08/07/2012 22:35

10k was for only a week, however.

I alternated outfits so that I didn't get bored, but frankly, I doubt anyone would notice / care whether you wear the same dress twice.

I travel a lot for work and I guess I'm just used to packing lightly due to that.

Viviennemary · 08/07/2012 22:41

I think some airports are cashing in and trying to make money from this by charging extortionate fees. I can absolutely see your point about heavy people getting waved through and you having to pay for being a couple of pounds over. We were worried last year we might be over, and I said to DH I wasn't paying a penny and would ditch some stuff if we were over. A nice couple said they got stung for being a few pounds over and had to pay £40 earlier in the year.

FiftyShadesofViper · 08/07/2012 22:46

As a major lardy-arse can I just point out that it is far easier to lose weight out of a suitcase than off my bum. I wish it was the other way round, I'd prefer to be thinner.

YABU as if bodyweight was part of the equation I'd have to go naked and that would ruin everybody's holiday!

CaseyShraeger · 08/07/2012 22:46

Hang on... wait a minute... back up... did you say "Ryanair" a few posts back?

If you flew Ryanair and expected not to get royally screwed over in every conceivable way plus a few inconceivable ones then YABVVVVVVVU. Before we even get onto the YABU-ness of your specific point.

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/07/2012 22:46

a spare bra????????? you only take two

i have clean underwear on every day- rem a thread ages ago about how many days mn wore a bra - i have a clean one every day

im also --anal- into matching underwear - so if have red strappy top will wear a red bra

so take a variety of white white black etc bras and obv matching knickers

2 bikinis

3 skirts/dress for beach/daywear

ditto outraged

clean clothes for every evening - i also like to dress up/look nice in evenings and always wear skirts/dresses

im fussy with suncream so buy here and take with me - admit that does weigh a fair amount as am sensible in the sun

shoes - beach - sandals, heels and flats (which wear on plane) so pack 3 pairs

OP posts:
Blondeshavemorefun · 08/07/2012 22:47

casey - yes ryan air coz they were the only airline that had the right times for flights as were away for a wedding

batteryhen:

"I remember hearing a debate about this on the radio. A man called and said he was stopped for having baggage that exceeded the weight, so he opened his case, and put on as much clothing as he could. He ended up wearing about 6 t-shirts, 3 pairs of jeans etc, He also put shoes and cd's in his pockets etc."

That's hilarious Grin.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 08/07/2012 22:49

Some airports are definatly cashing in! It's not about extra fuel or whatever half the time, it is just them trying to make money out of people who have no choice. Once when dh and I were going away on a scuba diving holiday we ended up at the check in desk next to a couple who had a young baby and a toddler. They were being charged extra, the poor Mum was almost in tears, but we got away with a free 5 kilos each when we produced our diving qualifications.

We were actually doing a diving holiday that time, so needed the extra weight for the kit, but I know people who have used their qualification to get them free allowance when they haven't been taking any dive kit.
