basically flew back from holiday last week and going out there my oh and I were 3 kg over the 40kg shared luggage weight and had to pay £30 in fees - £10 per kg - ouch

yet studying the check in queue there were at least 20 people who obv weigh much more then 6.5lbs (3kg roughly) more then me - prob more like 10 times

so aibu to want airplanes to take in consideration what the passenger weighs and their luggage - ie the slimmer you are the more allowance you can have

btw i am far from a skinny minny at a size 14/16 - though neither would i say i am grossly overweight but seems unfair all pay the same for a seat

You went over the allowance, you pay. It shouldn't have come as a surprise to you, surely you know the rules.

And as for fat people on planes - don't put one in your suitcase. That should be the end of your concern about it.

Its just the way it is life sucks ^ If you are a heavy traveller though you can go as a group with some lighties (our luggage is rarely over 12kg each, we have done this for people before) and share luggage allowance on check in. Of course if life was fair we would just pay less for our airline ticket as we always travel light.. you could just go on and on ^

surely the charge for extra luggage is for the fact that luggage handlers have to er, handle it? as in more weight more work for them. no-one has to lift passengers onto the plane.

Kinky, well said, I've learnt that I have to buy a ticket for DH rather than put him in the suitcase, he's never slimmed down to 20 kg...........

Oh yes, there is also the fact that no one has to carry you onto the plane.

Can you not see a hint of unreasonability about a check-in procedure that went along the lines of "I see your luggage is overweight by 3kg. Luckily we have determined that you fall just the right side of our Lardy Bastard Scale so there'll be no extra charge".

Actually weight limits are to do with how much fuel it takes for the flight and erm maximum weight for the plane. It's not about the staff lugging the baggage about!

YANBU, it's pathetic and if they cared about customer service at all they would let it go. If they pointed out you were over, but let it slide, you would come away with a positive impression of them and be more likely to book with them again. DH and I were over on one of our bags when we set off on honeymoon last year, the other was under so were still under the total shared allowance. They gave us the option of redistributing the weight but it was 6.30am, with a full queue of business travellers behind us and we felt like we were holding up the queue so paid the extra. Not the best start to honeymoon! Then on the actual plane we weren't sitting together, we asked the lady next to me to swap (she was sitting in the MIDDLE) with DH (also in middle a couple of rows away) and she point blank refused! Honeymoon or not I would always swap to allow people to sit together.

It's only a few kgs over, but if half the passengers have a few kgs over it means extra fuel. Most planes have luggage in containers, but for smaller, bulk-loaded planes, the flight crew have to adjust trim accordingly. That's what you're paying for.

It about the baggage handlers and about fuel.
Simple point is they say what you can take simple. If they ignored it and let everyone bring slightly over the plane would be able to fly due to weight. If they didn't charge most people would be over the limit.

If everyone on the plane carries an extra 3kg it will add an extra tonne of weight to the plane.

It baffles me how people can't keep within their weight allowance. We go skiing for a fortnight and still come under the allowance. What do you take on holiday??

Aside from that, you know the allowance before you go I either take things out or distribute more evenly across the suitcases.

Katie the reason individual bags can not he over is because of the baggage handlers. Bag of a certain weight must be lifted by 2 people not one.
They gave the option and tbh you couldn't be arsed. As for the not sitting together, did you not check you boarding passes. They usually sit parties together unless they have already seated everyone else and they can not sit you together. Had you got their earlier you would have got seats together.
A pain yes but there isn't much they can do about it.

It does actually worry me that they don't ever weigh passengers plus all luggage - I'm sure hand luggage can weigh a lot. I want to know the aeroplane can cope!

I think you have a point actually, about overweight people costing the airline a lot more in fuel than 9st me and my slightly overweight suitcase. But people can't help being tall, and tall people already have to pay extra even when they are not at all overweight to be able to sit in a seat with enough leg room for them, which I think is grossly unfair. But then I suppose if they discriminate against tall people like that, then they should be able to do the same with fat people.

If they stopped charging tall people to be able to actually sit in a seat, I'd say YABU. Until they do, YANBU.

The thing about the baggage handlers is irrelevant here, because they are allowed to lift 30kilos per bag, and lots of sporty things allow you to have an extra 5 kilos free in the same suitcase.

I take stuff out of my case and carry it on in my pockets and hand luggage.

Yup, just re-pack. Loads of people do and the airline check-in staff are used to it. (although you may have to queue up all over again )

40kg is a lot - YABU.
