basically flew back from holiday last week and going out there my oh and I were 3 kg over the 40kg shared luggage weight and had to pay £30 in fees - £10 per kg - ouch

yet studying the check in queue there were at least 20 people who obv weigh much more then 6.5lbs (3kg roughly) more then me - prob more like 10 times

so aibu to want airplanes to take in consideration what the passenger weighs and their luggage - ie the slimmer you are the more allowance you can have

btw i am far from a skinny minny at a size 14/16 - though neither would i say i am grossly overweight but seems unfair all pay the same for a seat

My (5ft 2, 8 stone) mother often talked her way out of excess baggage charges when traveling with my brothers and I (3 children under 6) using your argument OP. Sadly this was 20 years ago and doesn't fly anymore.

That's the thing, I am actually child sized - my lightest adult weight was 6st3 and until recent years I averaged around 7stone so yep it seems unfair that my dh who weighs more than double my weight gets the same luggage allowance!

Isn't it because it affects how much freight a passenger plane can carry? If there's too much luggage then there is less room for the pallets of DHL stuff etc and they don't make as much money

I remember hearing a debate about this on the radio. A man called and said he was stopped for having baggage that exceeded the weight, so he opened his case, and put on as much clothing as he could. He ended up wearing about 6 t-shirts, 3 pairs of jeans etc, He also put shoes and cd's in his pockets etc.

He weighed about 5kg extra but the ariline could do nothing about it :)

friend brought a pair for 99p from 99p shop - and hers weighed the same at home and airport

katie - seem silly together your bags were under your allowance as a couple but still had to pay :( and yes mean of the woman not to move but then again why didnt you book seats together as honeymoon

saying that i also object to paying another £15 per seat pp each way - ie £60 more so we can seat together

on ryan air its a free for all and surely would make more sense to book seats when you check in rather then get on plane and scramble to sit together - luckily oh and i did sit together but many couple who got on after us didnt

i understand that they cant waive extra fees for all, or all could take an extrs 3kg so in a plane with over 300 passengers a huge weight difference but still thought was mean at £10 per kg

flying home minus our toiletress, suncream and books - love to read by pool but i leave the ones i read for next person in accommodation or leave in book library and our luggage was 36 - so used up 7kg worth of shampoo etc

Take-off weights are a big factor but yes, they would far rather carry freight/cargo than people as they make more money from it. It's also a reason why people on standby can't get on a flight despite there being empty seats - the airline would rather use their weight allowance on freight than passengers (or SLF - self-loading freight).

A couple of years ago my hand luggage was overweight so the check-in staff kindly gave me a bag to put put stuff like my laptop in to bring my bag down to 7kg (nothing to do with overall weights, but safe limits for bags carried on overhead lockers). I duly moved stuff from one bag to another until I got to the bar and piled it all back in my wheelie laptop bag

All I can say is that for our last holiday, we had 20kg of luggage allowance each, and none of us went over 12kg.

i flew last week and outbound my case was 1.8k over, the check-in man allowed me to take out the extra weight at the desk. all i had to take out was a pair of shoes and a towel. would you really have had to take out so much if you were only 3k over?

BTW our case was for 2 people for a week so 10kg each.

The OP has worded it badly, but I can see her point.

Logistically the luggage allowance is more to do with fuel on the plane, but nobody weighs the passengers. You could have a plane full of 5ft size zeros, or a plane full of 6ft rugby players.

OP, YABU. You knew the rules, if you exceed the weight, you pay. If you don't like it, don't overpack. Simple as that. Besides I cannot imagine what on earth you could have taken: I have never even got near the allowance, and often I only take hand luggage even for trips lasting 2 weeks.

43kgs is a hell of a lot of stuff for a holiday. I've spent today trying to get all my clothes, books, etc into three holdalls for when I move back to the uk next week - all the clothes I own plus coats, few pairs of shoes, sleeping bag and bedding fit into a holdall that weighs 23kgs.

For future reference, British airways (prob other airlines as well) allow you to prebook excess baggage, it's about 40? for an extra 23kg bag.

for those who manage to pack and weigh 12/15 - how the hell do you manage that

i admit i didnt wear all my clothes, but only as apartment had a washing machine so did wear some items twice but when clean - ie white tops and skirts pj's

i honestly dont know how people manage to pack so little - i like clean clothes and underwear lol every day - i didnt take jeans or fleeces (heavy stuff imo) just skirts, tops, nighties and underwear, plus beach towel, toiltress/sun cream etc

wonder how much my suitcase weighs with nothing in it .............. maybe i have an extra heavy suitcase.....................

so if you are 16 stone should you have to pay more? My dad is 16 stone but he is 202m and I don't see why he should have to pay more to weigh more.

You pack well, my dd's go aways for a week and pack hand luggage only but have 5 outfits each - we can wash a couple of outfits to wear at the end of the week again.

I packed one suitcase weighing 20kg for the three of us to go to australia for 5 weeks and this included nappies and we don't re wear cloths until they are washed again. We came home with an extra holdall, and still we didn't manage 30 kg

My brother tried this as an excuse once - I'm not sure how he thought the line "I'm sure I weigh at least 10kg less than you and I bet you don't get charged extra to fly", delivered to the check-in lady, was going to get him off the excess baggage charge. It didn't, of course. She probably added a couple of kilos and spat on his boarding pass.

YABU. Airlines can't take into consideration weight as they have to consider discrimination laws especially if they fly to places like US, baggage weight is important to the handlers, if it is over generally a sticker is placed so that the handlers are aware for manual handling. As cabin crew even we have to do a manual handling course every year as to reduce injuries to ourselves because of baggage, at heathrow there are repacking areas where you can weigh your bags before and you can then take out as necessary.

It's nothing to do with baggage handlers - I'm allowed more when I fly business than economy and no one is thinking of the handlers then!

As for being sat together I find that increasingly frustrating, not a week ago at check in I was sat separately to my two elder DC (both under 8) and they themselves were sat apart. When I raised this at check in I was told there was no option.

It happens so regularly now that these days I just smile sweetly and start setting up the DC independently on the plane- usually passengers can't get their request to move in quick enough
