to think that staying in the UK is NOT a holiday

I'm sick of people patronising me. Next week I'm going to Peppa Pig World (and a car museum and assorted rubbishy British crappy places) for my daughters 2nd birthday and my 30th. Friends who have returned from hot countries have said things like, "Oh you must be really looking forward to it" and "Your jollies are soon!" (jollies = holidays).

FFS! Peppa Pig World is NOT a holiday!! What's worse is that my husband really believes that this is a fucking holiday. My idea of a holiday is:

Different culture.
Different country.
Nice weather is a bonus.

Whereas we'll be pushing a pram around in the rain for a week. I see it more as a 'trip' and no it's not semantics. And yes I'm PMSing.

You can have a holiday in England if it's sunny and you're near a beach. But I don't feel like I've been on holiday unless I've been abroad.

To all those people who are claiming, overtly or not, that the OP is a snob because you can't afford a holiday: get a grip. People have different expectations; the OP hasn't said "people who holiday in the UK are poor scumbags," she's just said that she doesn't fancy it. Stop being so defensive.

HomeEcoGnomist · 07/07/2012 11:34

Call me a snob, but I don't especially want my holiday to be "character building"

Well done to all of you who embrace the waterproofs, but if you view a holiday as the ability to escape to the sun, this isn't going to be everyone's idea of fun

Yes, it rains abroad - but not in the same way as it does here

OP, you are still NBU

quoteunquote · 07/07/2012 11:40

just buy some really good quality thick wetsuits, and suddenly the weather doesn't matter any more,

once you are in the water the rain is a bonus.

myBOYSareBONKERS · 07/07/2012 11:42

doggiemumma - we have already booked to go next year again. We go during April holiday as it is cheaper then. We did go on the beach and got burnt!!

We also do a private hire so it works out alot cheaper. This is who we used: js-devondelights.co.uk/ caravan JC180

We're not long back from Florida, and it rained there like I've never seen before! Was mainly sue to the tropical storm, but the rain came in sheets for 3 days, about 20 inches in all. There were people in the pool, people on the rides etc. You just make the best of it and still have a good time.

inabeautifulplace · 07/07/2012 13:09

"Yes, it rains abroad - but not in the same way as it does here"

Eh??? You must be aware that abroad includes a variety of places, some with the same climate as the UK. Yes, the UK is not the best place for a beach holiday. Other types of holiday are available.

I think the snob comment came about because she expressed dismay at having to stay in a caravan. Sandy Balls? :)

Mrsjay · 07/07/2012 13:15

we were in Florda 2 years ago squidgy and it rained like i had never seen before also a tropical storm I was drenched through walking from the tram stop on Idrive to our hotel which was just behind Idrive even my pants were soaked Blush

FoofyShmooffer · 07/07/2012 13:18

Am Grin at it rains differently abroad.

Really curious how it rains in those forrin parts
upwards? Maltesers? Sangria?

Yabu - sorry but either cancel or go and as my dear Ma would say "put yer bloody face straight".

Mrsjay · 07/07/2012 13:22

foofy i was In a shop the week we had summer remember it was end of april Grin
anyway this woman was complaining to the assistant how hot she was I cant cope with this heat blah blah, Assistant said but you go abroad every year

woman said Aye but it is a different heat Confused

inabeautifulplace · 07/07/2012 13:27

"if you view a holiday as the ability to escape to the sun, this isn't going to be everyone's idea of fun"

With 2 young kids, your ability to escape to the sun will possibly be restricted for a while. Best to make the most of what you have, and a caravan holiday in the New Forest shouldn't be that hard to endure.

PedanticPanda · 07/07/2012 13:33

Yabu, I'm going on holiday next week, up north camping for the weekend, it's a holiday for me. Every other holiday I've ever been on has been in the UK but it's still a bloody holiday - get a grip and stop being so f'kin miserable.

GoranisGod · 07/07/2012 13:36

I am extremely grateful that we are even getting a holiday this year!!-was looking very unlikely but dh managed to scrape a bit of cash together.

We are going to the seaside for the 3rd year in a row-the only holiday my kids have ever known.

By your definition of a holiday then I havent had one in 13 years-the last time I was abroad-bollocks!!

Dh an I dont particularly like fairgrounds, piers or paddling in freezing cold water but we do it for the kids-isnt that what families do?

Tbh I am not a fan of hot weather and my idea of hell would be lying on a beach or around a pool so for the forseeable future I think I will stick to staycations.

runnindownadream · 07/07/2012 13:46

You only have to Google to see the wide variety of "holidays" on offer - different people like different things.

Dh thinks a holiday should include snow whilst my dad spent a week riding on trains in Austria (that's a step too far me but hey he enjoyed it!) Ds only wants to play on a beach and jump in puddles - could be anywhere for all he cares.

To me a holiday is not having to set an alarm clock and having time away from the humdrum of everyday life

jamdonut · 07/07/2012 14:33

I can't even afford a proper holiday in this country, this year.
YABU

VolAuVent · 07/07/2012 14:34

Just because someone else prefers different holidays to you, or you've been on a holiday you didn't enjoy, doesn't mean it's "not a holiday". It's a holiday you didn't like.

If you go out to dinner and eat something you don't like, it doesn't mean you didn't go out to dinner!

suburbandream · 07/07/2012 14:39

YABU - having a break away from home is a holiday, whether it is in the UK or not surely? Although I agree that Peppa Pig world would not be my idea of a holiday, more like my worst nightmare Grin

WerthersUnOriginal · 07/07/2012 15:03

Well a bit of yabu and not really.

We've found from experience that rightly or wrongly a holiday is pretty much dictated by the ages and needs of the dc. No point in fighting it. Taking very young children to hot places to relax in adult type surroundings/lovely hotels will only end in bored dc and us being pesterd by them to distractionHmm

So yes, we've had many many camping type child centred holidays that I probably wouldn't have naturally gravitated towards. At one point I thought if I never saw or heard of Rory the Tiger again it'd be a lifetime too soon. But it was at least a break from home and our usual routine and looking back we have some lovely memories of dc enjoying all that so much. Also it was all we could afford at the time. So I think you have to lower or adjust your expectations around what's available to you and what dc can cope with and not torture yourself too much about what everyone else is up to.

Having said that holidays in the uk though are so often at the mercy of its foul weather. It's no good saying how lovely it can be here if all you can see is horizontal rain. Tbh about 3 years ago, after yet another wet muddy wash-out uk holiday we did finally call it a day on holidays here. Dc are older now and can manage travelling further afield anyway.

slowestwildebeast · 07/07/2012 15:14

why are you going to pepp pig world? No wonder you are upset.
Why do people feel the need to take kids to such bollocks?
I grew up on home based holidays, we had a caravan set in a country park/forest. Absolutely no need for pigs and legoland when you're surrounded by natures own themepark.
Mushroom picking. Tree climbing. Walks. Animals. Day trips.

Yabu. Use your imagination.

2rebecca · 07/07/2012 16:41

I think staying at home and doing nothing much can be more relaxing than airports, strange bed, hotel with paper thin walls etc. If I am not at work and am having a relaxing day then I'm on holiday. The location is irrelevent.
The pepperpig thing does sound awful though, but I don't think I really had holidays when the kids were young, you just run round after them. Places with kids clubs give a bit of a break, or we'd take it in turns to go off and do interesting things whilst the other childminded.

olibeansmummy · 07/07/2012 17:19

Yabu, some people would love your 'non holiday'

Arabellasmella · 07/07/2012 17:25

Peppa Pig world is near Bournemouth which is really lovely for a holiday. We went last year and had a wonderful week on the beach and exploring the dorset coast line. Totally agree about the weather though. We had a glorious week and it made all the difference. After holidaying on the Yorkshire coast for years when the kids were little, we went to Barcelona on honeymoon and remembered the joy of being abroad. We said we'd try and go every year after that but finances don't always allow it. Don't be sad, just try and make the most of it. YANBU though, know what you mean.

holyfishnets · 07/07/2012 17:31

We loved Peppa pig world. Stayed in a luxury hotel though with sauna etc though

AbigailS · 07/07/2012 17:35

holiday .... what's that?

Can't afford to go away in the UK in the summer and can't take cheaper term time breaks ... so holiday is in my vocabulary, unless you mean the time when the DC don't go to school, certainly not overseas.
